BRC JUL 18 - TWO-IN-A-ROW FOR PINPOINT ACCURACY

By Matthew Grimson | Monday, July 20, 2009

Eagle Farm, July 18, 2009.
QTIS 2yo Handicap - 1600m. Time: 1-37.52
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 7m.
1 Pinpoint Accuracy; 2 Man Of Oar; 3 Pharonic.

Pinpoint Accuracy, who is by Pins out of an O’Reilly mare, appreciated the extra ground last time when landing her Maiden win over 1500m and trainer Kelso Wood had little hesitation in taking the next step and putting the filly over a mile here.

The early part of the race was run at an ordinary pace and four horses fanned out in the leading line as the field turned for home. Pinpoint Accuracy and Man Of Oar, who have both raced towards the rear of the field until straightening, both switched out across heels at the head of the straight and moved forward together to challenge for the lead.

By the 250m mark the horse they had to reel in was Pharonic, who had slipped clear along the inside, but their momentum soon allowed them to have Pharonic well within their sights and it became apparent that whoever won the private battle between Pinpoint Accuracy and Man Of Oar would win the race.

It was Pinpoint Accuracy who found the extra required to complete back-to-back wins.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Kelso Wood: “I’ll turn her out now and let her strengthen up a bit. We’ll probably look at the Magic Millions and then go on to the Winter Carnival next year. All she wants to do is get over ground. I’ve always had an opinion of her. I really liked her when we bought her actually. She’s lightened off a lot, but that’s just her make-up. She’d run in a few of those really good two-year-old races over the carnival, but she sort of had wide barriers all the time. Couldn’t get a barrier.”

Wood was referring to Pinpoint Accuracy’s runs in the Golden Stakes (where she was drawn 18), the Doomben Slipper (draw 12) and the Australia Post (draw 14).

Jockey Joe Bowditch: “If you get a chance have a look at the start, she did exactly the same thing again. She jumped out about three or four horses. Sort of hit the horse outside of her and got her all off balance and that really dragged her back in. And then after that I was trying to go forward and every time I tried to go forward she just wanted to go left.

“Then, once we got up inside the second horse (Man Of Oar), she sort of raced up behind them. Coming around the corner I needed an out. She pushed her own way out and then away she went. She hangs out all the way until you straighten and then she heads back the other way.

"She was still strong on the line, gee she’s strong. Tough little thing. Doing everything wrong, but she’s still going on strong at the line.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Pinpoint Accuracy): 3.60 out to 4.20.
Favourite (Man Of Oar): 2.50 out to 2.80. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Hallmark Star (C. McIver) was tightened for room on jumping away between Craiglea Fury (A. Pattillo) and Pinpoint Accuracy (J. Bowditch), which jumped away awkwardly and shifted out. Deb’s Pick (J. Taylor) was slow to begin and then over-raced in the early and middle stages. A post race veterinary examination of Deb’s Pick failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
