BRC JUL 18 - KALKIE KANE LEADS RIVALS A MERRY DANCE

By Matthew Grimson | Monday, July 20, 2009

Eagle Farm, July 18, 2009.
1MW Country Cup - 1200m. Time: 1-11.14.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 7m.
1 Kalkie Kane; 2 Miss Henrietta; 3 Kanpeki.

The Lennie Wheeler trained Kalkie Kane made the opposition chase here with apprentice jockey Luke Rolls making every use of the gelding’s weight advantage with a bold front-running effort.

Perfectly rated by the young rider, Kalkie Kane enjoyed a 4kg pull at the weights with Miss Henrietta (who finished second) and a 6kg advantage with the top weight Kanpeki (who finished third). Those were the telling factors in the run home where, although Miss Henrietta was only a length away at the line, Kalkie Kane was never in danger of defeat.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Luke Rolls: “He’s a nice little horse mate, only a little fella, but he’s got a big heart ... and he’s quick too, he’s real speedy. I was real confident. He had no weight on his back. Coming into the home turn I knew I had it. I had a handful of horse. He had no weight on his back and I knew they wouldn’t pick me up.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Kalkie Kane): 8.50 out to 10.00.
Favourite (Worth Doing): 5.50 out to 6.00 in to 5.50. Finished eleventh.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Falconten, which was kicked behind the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. Used To be A Dancer fell a short distance after the start, dislodging Matthew Palmer. Jockey Palmer was attended to by ambulance paramedics and transported to hospital. An inquiry into the matter was adjourned. Slugsbrothernugget (J. Bowditch) over-raced in the early and middle stages. Falconten (A. Pattillo) was caught three wide rounding the first turn and raced three wide for the remainder of the race. Dubai Oasis (O. Turpin) was also caught wide on the first turn and raced wide throughout.

When questioned regarding Worth Doing settling further back in the field today as compared to the horse's normal pattern of racing on the pace, J. Byrne stated that the gelding began awkwardly and as horses to his outside possessed pace, he elected to ease his mount rather than bustle it and make use of it to occupy a position on the pace. He added that Worth Doing settled further back in the field than he had anticipated as a result of runners from out wide crossing. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed it to have sustained abrasions to the off-fore pastern.

A post race veterinary examination of Mohawk revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-foreleg. Trainer G. Cornish was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for that gelding prior to its next race start.
