SCTC JUL 19 - CELEBRATION TIME FOR BRAZIER & PIPER
By Graham Potter | Thursday, July 23, 2009
Sunshine Coast, July 19, 2009. Class 1 Handicap - 1200m. Time: 1-12.46. Track - Dead 5. Rail - out 5m. 1 Reizarb; 2 Tora San; 3 Over The Heather.
Reizarb’s second win in three starts ushered in a time for celebration for trainer Lloyd Brazier and stable apprentice Jana Piper. The Brazier / Piper team have had more than their fair share of ups and downs this season yet, in spite of a series of problems related to weight issues and suspensions which placed Piper’s career under serious pressure and gave Brazier much consternation, the young rider maintained a good enough of a strike-rate to firstly reel in the one-time runaway Sunshine Coast Jockey Premiership leader Owen Turpin and then skip into a Premiership lead which has been threatened in these final weeks of the season by the deadly form of class act Damian Browne.
This win placed Piper two ahead in the Premiership race and the result effectively decided the Sunshine Coast Jockeys Premiership.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Lloyd Brazier: “It is nice that such an important win for (jockey) Jana (Piper) came for her home stable. She handled it good and the horse handled it good because the big field was a worry. They jumped out and got up there early. Didn’t panic when there was a speed battle. Didn’t get involved in that, but when the horse did drop back quite a bit I thought, jeez, we might be in trouble here ... but as soon as she asked him for his effort away he went.
“It was a great effort too. He is a very good horse. I told you last time I’ve got a big opinion of him. On the look of that, he might get further so that’s got to get better and better. When these good horses like this can get further and further, that’s when they shine.”
Apprentice jockey Jana Piper: “He can be a really hard-puller in track work and I imagine he would do the same in the race if you give him the chance. So when we jumped out he jumped out really fiercely and wanted to pull. So I just snagged him and asked him to steady up a bit. He did and I put him to sleep ... and I think that is the best way because, if I had just left him there, he would have just pulled ... and pulled himself into the ground. When I did ask him to go, I didn’t have to do anything. He just went looking for his own runs.”
Trainer Lloyd Brazier’s comment to HRO after Reizarb’s previous win, which came first-up on July 5, is well worth repeating here as it puts the progress of the horse in perspective.
Lloyd Brazier (speaking after Reizarb’s first win on July 5): “He’s a very good horse mate. He’s also a very unlucky horse. He broke his jaw about five months ago. He just slipped over. He broke it in two places, very badly. We thought we were going to lose him. He was in hospital for about four months ... and he needed recovery time after that. So he’s had no luck at all.
“He’s still got trouble with his mouth. He can’t close his mouth now because when the jaw set it opened up about that much, you know. His tongue hangs out all the time now. Ah, but yeah, he’s shown us a lot of ability this horse. He should have won first time out, don’t worry about that. Things went wrong for him after that. It’s been fifteen months since he last raced.”
Reizarb has now landed two wins from two starts since resuming after his serious setback.
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Reizarb): 2.60 in to 2.50. The winner was the favourite.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Happy Giggleson (L. Rolls) was tightened for room on jumping away between Over The Heather (D. Browne) and Light The Tunnel (J. Byrne), both of which shifted ground. Luvenger (J. Kropp) was tightened for room on jumping away between Swell (N. Thomas) and Exclusive Circle (A. Merritt), which shifted in. Left Hook (K. Pope) and Gracemere (M. Hellyer) made contact on jumping away. Near the 500m, Swell (N. Thomas) had to be steadied when attempting to take a run in restricted room to the inside of Tora San (A. Badger). Leaving the 500m, Exclusive Circle (A. Merritt) laid in, tightening Luvenger (J. Kropp). Our Wave (M. Radecker) and Be Glorious (A. Pattillo) all raced wide for the majority of the event.
M. Morris, rider of Arabia, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that approaching the 1000m you permitted your mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Exclusive Circle and Luvenger (J. Kropp), resulting in both Exclusive Circle and Luvenger being tightened and losing their positions. Happy Giggleson (L. Rolls) was also checked in this incident. M. Morris was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 7 meetings to commence at midnight, 22 July and to expire at midnight, 1 August 2009.
