HK JAN 9 - MILITARY ATTACK ON SONG AT HAPPY VALLEY
By Hong Kong Jockey Club | Wednesday, January 9, 2013
Military Attack (124lbs) gunned down his rivals with a storming stretch run to land Happy Valley’s only Group race of the season, the HKG3 January Cup (Handicap), at the city track tonight - Wednesday, 9 January.
Jockey Weichong Marwing settled the John Moore-trained five-year-old toward the rear of the 10-runner field before producing his mount wide on the home turn for a withering centre track run that saw him grab victory close home.
Military Attack, a solid fifth to California Memory in the G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Cup (2000m) last start, took the 1800m prize by half a length in a time of 1m 49.73s.
Helene Spirit (129lbs), victorious in the HKG3 Chinese Club Challenge Cup (1400m) at Sha Tin eight days ago, filled the runner-up berth, with another last-time out winner, Beauty Lead (113lbs), a further short-head back in third.
“He really picked up well for me and he’s probably a Group 2 or Group 1 horse, so he had class on his side,” said Marwing of the Oratorio gelding, for whom this was a third Hong Kong victory and first in Pattern grade.
“His runs at Happy Valley have always been good and he’s done it again here tonight. There’s definitely more to come from him – he moves well and he’s a nice horse.
“To be honest, after I won on Same World (113lbs - 6th) last time, I thought that horse would be really competitive in tonight’s race but I couldn’t make the weight, so John allowed me to ride this horse, so thanks go to him and his connections.”
