EF MAY 11: LESS IS MORE OUTGUNS BLACK CASH

By Graham Potter | Monday, May 13, 2013

EAGLE FARM, MAY 11, 2013.

Track - Slow 7. Rail - True.
Channel 7 Benchmark 85 Handicap - 1600m.
1 Less Is More; 2 Black Cash; 3 Vacallo; 4 Viking Heart.
Time: 1-39.74. Last 600: 36.03.
Margins: 0.30; 1.00.

DAVID FOWLER’S RACE WRAP:

“Less Is More … raced quite handy to the speed, one off the fence.

“Went to Black Cash and Vacallo and the trio had a good tussle. In the end Less Is More and Black Cash paired off but Less Is More drove to the line to win by a neck from Black Cash.

“Less Is More is a former European galloper and is now under the care of David Vandyke. That was only his fifteenth start today for his fourth win.

“He had the benefit of one run back from a spell in the Doncaster prelude at Randwick and certainly dropping in grade today was a big assistance to Less Than More and the French-bred galloper proved too strong.

“The second placed Black Cash appreciated the conditions and boxed on well.”

WINNER FEEDBACK:

PART-OWNER ANGELO VASILI:

“David (Vandyke) is not here today. He is attending a couple of races at Rosehill.

“It was a good solid win. Two weeks today there is a 2200m race I believe and then 2400 into the Brisbane Cup, which is his target. There will be no issue with the distance.

“He was fancied.” (Less Is More was the only favourite to win on the day). “I think David’s horses are always pretty well in the market whether you take them, so I don’t know if that means there is a leak or a following.

“David has always been a very, very good trainer. It’s just the opportunities didn’t come his way and hopefully now they will and people will just take a bit of notice of his achievements and what he can do with horses.”

JOCKEY PETER ROBL:

“Brisbane’s been a good hunting ground for me. I like coming to Brisbane, but all the way through I’ve believed that, unless I’m coming for horses that I honestly think can win, I’m better off staying at home and riding winners … so, generally when I come I’ve generally got very good chances in the races so it’s good that one of them won here today*.

“Last start he did finish down the field.” (Fourteenth out of seventeen at Randwick behind Skyerush in the Doncaster Prelude).

“Yeah, look, he was first-up. I think it was a mile that day … he was first-up, he was three deep, he had a hard run in transit and he probably just petered out the last 150.

“So, whilst fourteen out of seventeen doesn’t look that good on paper when you actually watch the run it was quite a justifiable run.

“Long term Brisbane Cup prospects … yeah, he’ll run two miles this horse.

“He has got that sort of attitude about him. He never picks up the bridle, so the 2400 of the Cup up here will be no concern to him whatsoever.”

*This was not Robl’s only success on the day. He would, of course, go on to land the big one on the day, the Group 1 BTC Cup which he took out with ease aboard Your Song.

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:

Winner (Less Is More): 4.00 out to 4.60.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:

Black Cash (D. Browne) shifted out at the start and bumped Less Is More (P. Robl). Raeburn (A. Butler) was hampered soon after the start when tightened for room between Black Cash and Veeten (C. Munce), which was taken out by Vacallo (B. Stewart), which was also taken out by Steep (R. Wiggins).

For some distance approaching and passing the 1100m Vacallo, which was over-racing, bumped with Black Cash.

Waterford (L. Innes), Veeten and Danagaze (G. Goold) raced three wide throughout.

Raeburn was inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 300m.

Vacallo was galloped on on the near-hind leg.

B. Stewart (Vacallo) was fined $200 for using his whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
