DOOM MAY 18: MISSY LONGSTOCKING FULLY TESTED IN LANCASTER STAKES VICTORY

By Graham Potter | Monday, May 20, 2013

DOOMBEN, MAY 18, 2013

Track - Dead 4. Rail - 1.5m 900m - 375m. True Remainder.
Cellarbrations LANCASTER STAKES (Listed- Two-year-old fillies) - 1200m.
1 Missy Longstocking; 2 Hallside Rose; 3 Enquare; 4 Vienna Queen.
Time: 1-10.42. Last 600: 35.41.
Margins: 0.10; 2.00.

DAVID FOWLER’S RACE WRAP:

“Hillside Rose gave Missy Longstocking a real run for her money.

“When Missy Longstocking went up to win we thought she would kick clear but Hillside Rose kept kicking on the inside.

“Missy Longstocking got the bob in on the line to win the prize in a good time. You should take into account that the colts and geldings ran over a second slower than the fillies.

“She was good too … Missy Longstocking … because she was trapped deep. She was three wide at the 600m. She covered some extra ground, so that certainly adds some merit to the performance.

“Missy Longstocking boasts an excellent race record. This is her fifth win from her seventh start."

*Trainer Liam Birchley was not at the track. He was at Scone where Trajet saluted at 12-1 for the stable half an hour prior to Missy Longstocking’s win.

WINNER FEEDBACK:

JOCKEY DAMIAN BROWNE:

“I didn’t want to get as far back as I did the other day (when finishing fourth to Le Val in the Ken Russell at the Gold Coast).

“Obviously this time we raced from a little bit better barrier. I was happy to be three wide as long as she had cover and relaxed. She was able to do that.

“Halfway up the straight I thought she was going to win by two or three lengths. Give credit to Denis Heinemann’s horse (Hallside Rose). She fought really hard and he really made my filly work for it.

“I think there is still a little bit of room for improvement there as well, which there will probably need to be for her next run.

“I’m sure she will improve in time. Without a doubt. As a three-year-old she will only be better.

“She is a very awkward horse to ride because she carries her head so low. It feels like you are going to fall over the front handle-bars. It’s a very unusual thing but it’s also because she has got a good size backside on her, you feel like you are running downhill all the time.

“Stepping up … I think 1350, 1400m might pull her up … we’ll only find out whether she can get that when she has a go at it, but she is going to have to get a really sweet run in transit and only get one crack at them.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:

Winner (Missy Longstocking): 1.70 in to 1.65.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:

Connections advised that SHE'S A DANICA would be ridden in a midfield position if possible from the wide barrier. SHE'S A DANICA settled towards the rear of the field.

SPLENDORA (G. Colless) was restrained at the start from the wide barrier to gain a position closer to the fence. MESMEREYESER (M. Cahill) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out and brushed SPLENDORA (G. Colless). REGISTER (L. Nolen) began awkwardly.

MESMEREYESER over-raced in the early and middle stages when racing three wide without cover.

MISSY LONGSTOCKING (D. Browne) and NAVELINA (E. Wilkinson) raced three wide throughout the race.

Stewards asked trainer G. Heinrich to explain the riding tactics adopted today on SHIRAZ ATTACK, which appeared to be in contrast to its first start in a race where it led.

Mrs Heinrich stated on that occasion the horse was ridden forward purely on the basis that the rail was a long way out that day and felt it would be a considerable disadvantage to race back in the field. She added that today it was the stable's intention to allow SHIRAZ ATTACK to find its feet in the early stages and these were the instructions issued to the rider.

Stewards reminded trainer G. Heinrich of her obligations under AR135A, which place a responsibility on her to advise them of any intention to vary riding tactics.
