BRC JUL 29 - SIR DENIS MAKES WINNING DEBUT

By Graham Potter | Friday, July 31, 2009

Eagle Farm, July 29, 2009.
3yo Maiden Plate - 1000m. Time: 58.56.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 12m.
1st - Sir Denis; 2nd - Drawn To Dubai; 3rd - Pearly Beach.

In spite of looking around, wanting to run around and basically showing just how green he was on debut, the Jan Aitkenhead trained Sir Denis still had enough raw ability to line his rivals in impressive fashion. Drawn To Dubai managed to stay with two lengths of the winner, but the rest were seven lengths back and more as the first-timer turned the race into a procession. No wonder Sir Denis got lost when left lonely in the lead!

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Jan Aitkenhead: “I’ve got eight in work for Lakeview Stud at the moment. Sir Brilliant won the other day, which was my first city winner, and now this one. I’ve only had four runners for them for two winners. He is pretty green. He is pretty new. He’ll probably go to the paddock now and he will probably come back a better horse.”

Jockey Shane Scriven: “Yes mate, I’m sick of running bloody second (referring to his run of recent results), so that was good. This one was very green. Lucky (trainer) Jan (Aitkenhead) told me about it. You know the word was that he was very smart and they said when you get to the front - and they assured me I would - just watch that he doesn’t do exactly what he did. Well, I was sort of ready for it but mate, trying to be ready for it and trying to compensate for it are two different things. I just kept roaring at him and trying to make him go forward. He’s got a future once the penny drops.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Sir Denis) : 3.10 out to 3.50 in to 2.70.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Miss Trish (S. Galloway) was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, Flight Lord (M. Speers) was buffeted and became unbalanced between Pearly Beach (J. Taylor) and Angel Gal (J. Bowditch). Flight Lord then raced in restricted room for some distance between Angel Gal and Pearly Beach (J. Taylor), which hung in. Sir Denis (S. Scriven) raced greenly and shifted out over the concluding stages of the race. Pearly Beach hung in for the majority of the event.
