FROM MY PERSPECTIVE - ALWAYS GOOD TO BOUNCE BACK WITH A COUPLE OF WINNERS

By Michael Cahill | Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Apart from Australia, five-time Group 1 winning jockey Michael Cahill has ridden in the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Malaysia, South Korea and Mauritius. He brings thirty-three years of race riding experience to the game and with this greater all-around experience Michael is superbly qualified to give insightful commentary on the racing scene. Michael’s personal blog, ‘From my perspective’ appears exclusively on HRO.

It was good to bounce back from some sort of twenty-four hour flu … some viral infection … which prevented me from riding at the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday.

I always ride when I can, but I was sick on Tuesday. I don’t like missing meetings at which I am due to ride. It cost me a winner on Tuesday and they all add up you know.

Even on the Wednesday morning … at about nine o’clock I was still doubtful. I didn’t know if I could make it through the day but I got to the track and I improved as the day went on.

So it was good to bounce back with a couple of winners, particularly on a day like Exhibition Show day. The day’s got such a great atmosphere with its bumper crowd.

Kelso Wood’s winner Into The Red by all accounts had a big wrap on it going into the race.

I’d never been on his back before. I’d watch him trial. He looked to trial pretty good and on race-day he ran well. I suppose you could say he ran up to expectations.

It was a pretty dominant display. He is a nice horse who gave me a good feel.

Apparently they are looking to take him down south … or at least that is an option. You’d would have to consider it seriously the way he went today.

I don’t make the trip down south myself too often. I consider those personal options very carefully.

I could gone last Saturday and rode Temple Of Boom who just got beat in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap and Tony Gollan also gave me the offer to ride Whiskey Allround in the San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill this Saturday … which I have accepted.

I’ve trialled Whiskey Allround twice. He trialled pretty well both times.

Saturday will tell whether he is capable of mixing it with the class of three-year-old down there that he is going to compete with.

He’s got a good opportunity. He is drawn two which is important in that start at Rosehill.

I’ve had success with Tony over the years. I rode Temple Of Boom and Spirit Of Boom, both when they were young horses. He’s been a good supporter of mine.

My other winner was Caballo Rapido for David Murphy.

I rode Caballo Rapido at the Sunshine Coast back in June. I thought he was entitled to win on that occasion but he put his head on one side and was a bit reluctant to go in-between horses, but he was the opposite today.

He went through an opening like a steam-train and won with authority.

That’s two-in-a-row now.

David’s horses are going very well at the moment and I’m fortunate to be part of that success.

Till next week,

Michael.
