SEVEN DAYS (THE WEDNESDAY REPORT): THE WEEKLY REVIEW (APRIL 9 - APRIL 15) - STEWARDS REPORTS

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, April 16, 2014

HRO's news and commentary feature - SEVEN DAYS (THE WEDNESDAY REPORT) - provides a weekly review of racing activity, both on and off the track.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACTS:

FROM EAGLE FARM (APRIL 9):

GENERAL: Trainer A. Willick pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR178F in that during a routine stable inspection this morning she was unable to provide stewards with an updated treatment record log. Ms Willick was subsequently fined the sum of $300.00.

After being boxed SHANTUNG BOXER reared on several occasions. Whilst this was occurring CRUSADER KING also became fractious. Trainer J. Meagher was advised that a warning would be placed on the barrier manners of SHANTUNG BOXER. SHANTUNG BOXER (R. Wiggins) began awkwardly and shifted out resulting in LAKE ARGYLE (N. Tomizawa) being badly hampered onto TWISTED MOUNTAIN (C. Munce). (Race 3). *SHANTUNG BOXER, a $3.80 favourite, finished third 11.80 lengths behind the runaway winner TWISTED MOUNTAIN.

Whilst the stewards were satisfied that the riding of ISLAND EMPIRE over the concluding stages did not affect its finishing position P. Holmes was nonetheless fined the sum of $300.00 under the provisions of AR137(b) for failing to ride his mount out to the end of the race. (Race 3). *ISLAND MOUNTAIN finished fourth, just 0.10 lengths behind the third placed SHANTUNG BOXER.

A post-race veterinary examination of PROMO revealed the gelding had suffered a bleeding attack during the event. Trainer M. Dunn was advised that PROMO will now incur a mandatory 3 month ban from racing under the provisions of AR53A. (Race 3).

BURNING SAILS was inspected at the barriers by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. (Race 6). *BURNING SAILS ($9) won the race by three lengths.

After being boxed HELL'S KITCHEN kicked out and got its hind leg caught between the back gate. HELL'S KITCHEN was examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. (Race 9). *HELL’S KITCHEN ($9) finished fifth 2.10 lengths behind the winner.

FROM ROCKHAMPTON (APRIL 10):

SUPPLEMENTARY (Springsure March 22): Stewards today concluded an adjourned inquiry into the late nomination, acceptance and scratching of RAZOR GANG. Previous evidence from Trainer W Meek was heard that he had nominated the horse with the intention to start, had accepted with both his runners on the evening before, and after working the horse the following morning was not satisfied as to fitness of the mare and for that reason elected to scratch. Stewards sought further information in regard to limits for fields at nominations and acceptances. After doing so, no action was taken against Mr Meek and his explanation was noted.

FROM EAGLE FARM (APRIL 11):

Soon after the start, GREAT PRETENDER (B. Stewart) commenced to buck and continued to do so for some distance, and then was eased down by its rider near the 800m. Trainer L. Ross was advised that gelding would be required to compete in an official barrier trial prior to its next race start. (Race 3). *GREAT PRETENDER was a $10 chance.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by T. Bell, rider of the 4th placegetter, INNER VIKING, against BRANDED (A. Holt) being declared the 2nd placegetter, alleging interference near the 200m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the official video, stewards were of the view that STRATOSPHERE ANGEL (C. Munce) had shifted out approaching the 200m, resulting in BRANDED (A. Holt) being taken out slightly. Soon afterwards, BRANDED shifted out away from that runner and momentarily inconvenienced INNER VIKING. Stewards could not be satisfied that this interference had materially affected the placings bearing in mind the margins involved and the protest was dismissed and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge's placings. (Race 4). *BRANDED beat INNER VIKING home by 0.60 lengths.

MR JETSET (R. Wiggins) was tightened for room at the start between INNER VIKING (T. Bell) and BRANDED (A. Holt), which shifted out. After taking initial evidence from apprentice L. Tarrant (NIK NIK), R. Ride (LONG TALL SALLY) and J. Byrne (SOUTHERN CAPTAIN), all of which suffered varying degrees of interference passing the 1000m, the inquiry was adjourned so as to allow apprentice A. Holt, rider of BRADED, to be represented by his master, trainer S. O'Dea, who was not present at the meeting. (Race 4).

OUTBACK PRIDE was declared a late scratching a 8.23 am. Trainer L. Weston was fined $300. In considering penalty stewards were mindful that the late scratching had prevented other runners from taking their place in the field. (Race 5).

Leaving the 1100m, KAYNO (J. Taylor) improved onto the heels of SADDLEBACK (S. Bogenhuber) and shifted wider, forcing JUPITER PALM (M. Cahill), which was following, wider. As a consequence, CREDIT ONLY (M. Carson), which was following, commenced to over-race and improved to the inside of JUPITER PALM (M. Cahill) and bumped ROMEO LAD, which in turn made heavy contact with the running rail. ROMEO LAD then commenced to over-race and improved to the inside of QUIET COLLECT (L. Tarrant) (Race 5). *ROMEO LAD won the race.

Connections advised that EXECUTE AT DAWN would be ridden back from the wide gate. EXECUTE AT DAWN was subsequently ridden with vigour from the barrier to take up a forward position. After interviewing rider M. Cahill, stewards adjourned the matter to interview trainer D. Forster regarding the matter. (Race 6). *EXECUTE AT DAWN ($13) finished second last, 7.70 lengths behind the winner.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of SPINIFEX FIRE, L. Tarrant stated that after being bumped in the early stages the mare became unbalanced and was then obliged to race in restricted room to the inside of GREY TIGHTS (A. Allen) for the majority of the race. He was of the view that the horse resented racing in restricted room which contributed to the mare's failure to finish off the race as expected.

Trainer B. Brown agreed with the comments of apprentice Tarrant and reported that SPINIFEX FIRE appeared to be slightly short in its action behind following the race. Mr Brown undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that comes in the subsequent days may have had a bearing on the performance. A post-race veterinary examination of SPINIFEX FIRE failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. A swab sample was taken from SPINIFEX FIRE. (Race 6). *SPINIFEX FIRE, a $7 chance, finished last.

Near the 100m, GET ON DOWN (L. Tarrant) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of ALQUERO (B. El-Issa) which shifted in. An inquiry into this incident will be convened at a time and date to be fixed. (Race 7).

The start was delayed when AUGUSTE was fractious in the barriers. After being removed from the barriers, AUGUST was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. (Race 8). *AUGUSTE ($17) finished fourth 4.10 lengths behind the winner.

FROM DOOMBEN (APRIL 12):

After being boxed SAMBUCA SHOT (App T. Harrison) broke through the front of the gates and was quickly restrained, returned to the start, examined and declared suitable to race. A post-race veterinary examination of SAMBUCA SHOT revealed the gelding to have sustained a small puncture wound to the off-fore cannon. (Race 1). *SAMBUCA SHOT ($7) finished unplaced 3.10 lengths behind the winner.

A post-race veterinary examination of HIGH KIN (E. Wilkinson) revealed the mare to be sore over the hind quarters. Trainer S. MacKinnon was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness would be required prior to HIGH KIN again racing. (Race 2). *HIGH KIN ($7) finished tailed off.

VINTAGE COGNAC was declared a late scratching at 11.25 a.m. by order of stewards after the stable advised that they were made aware this morning by a staff member that VINTAGE COGNAC had inadvertently been treated with a substance whilst receiving dental work yesterday morning. The explanation tendered by co-trainer Mr D Meagher for this error was accepted by stewards. (Race 7).

FROM GOLD COAST (APRIL 12):

SUPPLEMENTARY: Following Race 8 Stewards determined a betting dispute between Ms S Galvin and Parlay 888 as to the price displayed for ANGEL'S DESTINY prior to Race 8. Ms Galvin alleged that Parlay 888 had displayed a price of $6 when she attempted to place a wager. Parlay 888 disputed that claim on the basis that $4.60 was advertised when Ms Galvin attempted to place the wager. After considering all the evidence and interviewing Mr D Preindl, a clerk representing Parlay 888, stewards could not be satisfied that the price of $6 had been displayed at the relevant time and therefore took no further action.

When questioned as to the performance of TURVANNA, App. Ashley Butler was of the view that today's distance of 900m may have been too short for the mare. App. Butler added that TURVANNA did not travel comfortably at any stage of the race. A post-race veterinary examination of TURVANNA failed to reveal any abnormalities at the time of examination. (Race 2). *TURVANNA ($6) finished unplaced 6.80 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards will interview Jockey C Small (HEY FRISCO) with regard to his use of the whip prior to the 100m. (Race 8).

FROM TOOWOOMBA (APRIL 12):

Stewards questioned A. Fancourt with regard to her riding of EXTREME MOVER in the middle stages of the event, whereby she appeared to lose ground when trailing HUSSY ERIN. Apprentice Fancourt advised that she had specific instructions from trainer P. Sexton to position EXTREME MOVER to the outside passing the 700m and as a result in endeavouring to do so, she made contact with OUR GRAND FINALE (S. Bogenhuber).

Apprentice Fancourt added that as a result of attempting to perform this move to comply with her instructions, she did in fact lose ground at that stage of the race. Having the opportunity to review the film, apprentice Fancourt agreed with stewards in hindsight it would have been more advantageous to maintain a trailing position behind HUSSY ERIN rather than attempt shift wider on the track at that point of the race. (Race 1).

The start was delayed initially when SPENT (R. Jamieson) required resaddling upon arrival at the barriers. The start was further delayed when SPENT became fractious in the barriers, reared over and became cast under the gates. SPENT was declared a late scratching. (Race 4).

GREYTFILLY (T. Bell) was slow to begin. (Race 7).

FROM ROCKHAMPTON (APRIL 12):

Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey A. Coome as to the tactics adopted on ASSIMILATOR and the seemingly disappointing performance of the gelding. Jockey Coome stated that he was instructed to take up a forward position if possible, however due to the pace of runners to his inside he was only able to position the gelding midfield and was further back than he had intended.

In regard to the performance of ASSIMILATOR, Jockey Coome said that the gelding did not feel comfortable throughout the event and in the middle stages he had difficulty maintaining his place in the field. Jockey Coome added that when placed under pressure in the home straight ASSIMILATOR did not respond to his riding. Nevertheless, he was of the opinion that the gelding will take some fitness benefit from today's effort. (Race 2).

The declaration of correct weight was delayed when Mr W. Winters, the trainer of HARRY MET SANDY, viewed the photo finish print for 5th place. After doing so Mr Winters was satisfied with the judge's placings. (Race 5).

While the trainer or rider of JUST CALL ME LOUIE had not approached Stewards, the declaration of correct weight was further delayed as Stewards considered whether to lodge an objection on behalf of JUST CALL ME LOUIE, placed fifth against BORN TO FIRE, placed second. However, having taken into account the margin between these runners, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that an objection would have been successful and correct weight was declared. (Race 5). *BORN TO FIRE beat JUST CALL ME LOUIE home by 0.80 lengths.

When questioned regarding the performance of SIR GALLEN Jockey A. Coome stated that he expected to lead in the event, however after beginning awkwardly he was of the opinion that racing back in the field had been detrimental to the performance of SIR GALLEN.

Jockey Coome said that when placed under some pressure in the home straight the gelding failed to respond to his riding as expected. Trainer J. McConachy informed stewards that SIR GALLEN will now be given a freshen-up for three or four weeks. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed that SIR GALLEN was showing a poor post-race recovery rate. (Race 6).

FROM ESK (APRIL 12):

Stewards questioned N Evans, the rider of MANNER LASSIE in relation to his riding of the mare in the home straight. After taking evidence from N Evans and G Richardson, trainer of MANNER LASSIE, stewards adjourned the inquiry to a time and date to be fixed. A post-race veterinary examination of MANNER LASSIE failed to reveal any abnormality. (Race 1).
NAUGHTY PATTIE (App M Cox) began awkwardly and was hampered at the start when the outside barrier partition, after being initially slightly slow to open, swung back and made contact with the near shoulder of the filly. Soon after NAUGHTY PATTIE, which was having its first race start, raced greenly for a short distance. (Race 1). *NAUGHTY PATTIE finished last.

Correct weight was delayed after App M Cox, rider of third placegetter MI IDEA, indicated to stewards her barriers were slow to open. After reviewing patrol footage and taking evidence from starter D Hearne, App M Cox and Mr I Livingstone, trainer of MI IDEA, stewards confirmed the barriers of MI IDEA were slow to open resulting in the mare losing valuable ground.

Given the provisions of AR 134A stewards subsequently declared correct weight on the judge’s placings. Prior to the running of race 3 the starter and club officials successfully tested all barrier stalls on a number of occasions. (Race 2). *MI IDEA finished third, 2.10 lengths behind the winner.

FROM JULIA CREEK (APRIL 12):

Near the 1000m POMATINI (T. Chambers) had to be steadied when crowded onto the fence by BIANCO ROSSA (A. Spradau) which shifted in when not clear. In issuing jockey Spradua with a reprimand under AR137(a) stewards were mindful that both runners were racing well back in the field and visibility was poor due to the kick back. (Race 3).

Prior to the declaration of correct weight connections of the second placed CHEERS BROWE (NZ) requested to view the photo finish for first placing of the event. The judges margin being declared as a nose. After viewing the photo both were satisfied with the judge's decision and correct weight was declared. (Race 4).

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, connections of fourth place getter LIGHT WARRIOR requested to view the photo finish for third placing of the event. The judges margin being declared as a short head. After viewing the photo both were satisfied with the judge's decision and correct weight was declared. (Race 5).

FROM SUNSHINE COAST (APRIL 13):

SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT (From Sunshine Coast - March 9 - Race 5): Stewards today concluded an adjourned inquiry into a fall which occurred near the 500m in this event. After taking evidence from apprentice Brooker (SHELBY) in the presence of apprentice representative R. Mason and taking further evidence from J. Taylor (STAR SPOTTER) and R. McMahon (DON'T LOOK ETHLEN), and also viewing the patrol footage, stewards established that at a point leaving the 600m DON'T LOOK ETHLEN shifted out around the heels of LOVE YOU LIBBY (A. Hearn) to secure clear running when SHELBY, which had commenced to weaken, shifted out to a position which allowed DON'T LOOK ETHLEN to take this run.

Stewards were further satisfied that SHELBY had shifted to a three wide position and STAR SPOTTER, which was racing outside at this point, had shifted to a four wide position. Shortly thereafter, contact was made between these two runners when SHELBY shifted out further and this resulted in STAR SPOTTER shifting in slightly, tightening the running of SHELBY, which then shifted in and away across the heels of DON'T LOOK ETHLEN, resulting in that horse clipping the heels of DON'T LOOK ETHLEN and falling. In assessing this incident, stewards were mindful of the racing characteristics of SHELBY, which was weakening badly at the time.

Stewards deemed this incident to be an unfortunate racing incident and took no further action.
R. McMahon was fined $200 for failing to make himself available to this inquiry before the first race when he had been directed by stewards to do so.

Stewards inquired into the performance and handling of DUELONTHEDOWNS. Of concern to stewards was apprentice Johnson's apparent failure to take up a position trailing ZODIAC (T. Wolfgram) during the early stages where it appeared she had opportunity to do so. Of further concern was when leaving the 1200m Ms Johnson's failure to place DUELONTHEDOWNS under any pressure to take up a position closer to the main body of the field and when leaving the 800m Ms Johnson failed to improve her position when there appeared an opportunity to do so.

Ms Johnson explained that she had been instructed to take up a forward position, however after beginning awkwardly she was unable to do so and elected to take hold and settled at the rear of the field. She added that the horse resented being restrained approaching the 1600m and became awkward when making the first turn. She also added that in the middle stages DUELONTHEDOWNS was travelling comfortably and she did not wish to unsettle the horse at this stage of the event. She explained that when leaving the 800m she attempted to follow ZEROMIX into the race when that horse commenced to improve, however DUELONTHEDOWNS did not run on in the home straight when not comfortable in the rain-affected conditions. She further added that this was the horse's first start for some time racing in a clockwise direction.

Trainer B. Guy confirmed the instructions and also expressed similar concerns to those of the stewards. After considering the explanation and viewing the patrol films, stewards accepted that in the early stages DUELONTHEDOWNS raced somewhat ungenerously and became awkward on the first turn, however advised Ms Johnson that in their opinion she had erred in failing to ride DUELONTHEDOWNS along from the 1200m and again after leaving the 800m so as to improve its position there was an opportunity to do so.

However, given the way in which DUELONTHEDOWNS failed to finish the race off, and given Ms Johnson's status as an apprentice, stewards did not believe her riding of DUELONTHEDOWNS was culpable under the rules of racing. A post-race veterinary examination of DUELONTHEDOWNS revealed no significant findings, and a swab sample was taken. (Race 2). *DUELONTHEDOWNS, the $4 favourite, finished 21.80 lengths behind the winner.

When questioned, jockey R. Wiggins was unable to explain the disappointing performance of TIRARRI. Stewards will interview trainer L. Birchley at a later date. (Race 3). *TIRARRI ($3.60) finished unplaced 5.10 lengths behind the winner.

The start of this race was delayed when ELEGANTLY (K. Matheson), which lost its rider behind the barriers, came into contact with the outside fence and had to be inspected by the veterinary surgeon before taking its place in the field. (Race 5).

When asked to comment on the performance of KARIEGA, jockey D. Browne stated that from his wide alley he had elected to take hold from the barrier and as the horse had finished its trials off well ridden in this fashion, that was the pre-race plan.

He added that throughout the event he was obliged to pressure the horse as it had a tendency to race greenly. He felt that the horse was doing its best work over the concluding stages and would be suited to races over longer distances. (Race 5). *KARIEGA ($4.40) finished third 0,40 lengths behind the winner.

Stewards questioned R. McMahon regarding the tactics adopted on SPIRIT TORQUE in that the horse was ridden forward to sit outside the lead in today's event, which is in contrast to its racing pattern. Jockey McMahon stated that it had not been his intention to lead, however after beginning well and finding himself caught wide in the early stages, he elected to stride forward to obtain a position closer to the fence. (Race 5). *SPIRIT TORQUE ($9) finished unplaced 5.00 lengths behind the winner.

As T. Bell expressed concerns with visibility and did not wish to fulfil his engagement, R. McMahon was substituted as the rider of WINE BY THE GLASS. (Race 6).

Shortly after entering the home straight, when attempting to remove his goggles, jockey Hellyer's whip became entangled in the rein of ROMAN SECRET for a short distance. (Race 6). *ROMAN SECRET ($4.40) finished unplaced 7.10 lengths behind the winner.

When asked to comment on the performance of WINE BY THE GLASS, R. McMahon stated that the mare blundered on jumping away and when weakening in the home straight became unbalanced and blundered on a number of occasions. He added that the horse at no stage travelled comfortably in the rain-affected conditions. A post-race veterinary examination of WINE BY THE GLASS found the horse to have a slower than normal post-race recovery. (Race 6). *WINE BY THE GLASS ($4) finished second last 9.80 lengths behind the winner.
