SYD AUG 08 - WALLER STABLE ON-SONG
By HRO | Wednesday, August 12, 2009
Apart from taking out the featured Group 3 San Domenico Stakes with Shellscrape, trainer Chris Waller also landed the first two races on Saturday at Randwick with Voice Coach and Altered Boy. Both runners were winning for the third time in succession underlying the momentum that this leading stable has built up in the early part of the season. Corey Brown did the honours in the saddle for the two undercard Waller winners.
Randwick, August 8, 2009. Track - Dead. 3yo and up Handicap - 2000. Time: 2-06.98. 1 Voice Coach, 2 Pacino; 3 Future’s Dream.
Voice Coach once again proved that Chris Waller's decision to import tried middle distance gallopers from the northern hemisphere was a good one. Placed very well at this time of year against the off- season horses, Voice Coach, on a seven day back up, was never in trouble and made it three from three since the addition of blinkers.
After settling in second position in a typically slowly run middle distance race, Corey Brown was forced to chase from the 800m when stable-mate and fellow import Futures Dream made a quick forward move. Shortly after straightening Voice Coach hit the front and ran away to score a commanding victory. Pacino made steady ground late to grab the tiring Futures Dream for second while Two Towers was the eye catcher running on strongly for fourth.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Chris Waller: “I wasn’t as confident today as I was last start, so to see him come out in open company ... although it probably wasn’t the best open field around, I’ve still got a lot of respect for Pacino (who finished second). It still won by three ... two or three lengths and did a great job.
“Races like the Wyong Cup, the Newcastle Cup and the Metropolitan have been in the back of my mind. We definitely wanted to get a bit more prize-money in the bank. It’s no use racing outside your grade until you’ve got some money banked away. So we are starting to do that now. We’ll probably back off him slightly and probably aim him towards the Metropolitan.”
Jockey Corey Brown: “He is fast developing into a really nice horse. If you had asked me four starts ago I would have put a pencil through him because he didn’t seem to be trying. As soon as the blinkers have gone on he has just really, really become a racehorse.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: At the 600m, after being crossed by Future’s Dream, Voice Coach, as it went forward Of Ourquestro, hung in, resulting in Outquestro being checked and Sussman, which was following, being hampered in consequence. Whilst Stewards accepted that C Brown reacted immediately when his horse hung in, he was told he must at all times ensure that riders to his inside have sufficient racing room. App. T Berry was spoken to concerning the veracity of his evidence. A post race veterinary examination of Ourquestro did not reveal any abnormalities
Randwick, August 8, 2009. Track - Dead. 3yo and up Handicap - 1400. Time: 1-23.64. 1 Altered Boy, Bejewelled, Miss Marielle.
The two in-form and fancied runners in Altered Boy and Bejewelled fought out a good finish with the favourite Altered Boy chasing hard to get the verdict on the line. The win made it three wins on end for Altered Boy and an early double on the day to Chris Waller and Corey Brown.
Stepping up to 1400m today Altered Boy settled midfield on the rails and Brown never went around a horse to drive hard late and grab Bejewelled, who looked home for all money after forging to the lead early in the home straight. Lodge The Deeds ran an honest race for fourth and could be one for the notebook.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Chris Waller: “Confidence is a wonderful thing and he’s going great. He just seems to be going so much better now that we are riding him quiet and he’s finishing the race off where it counts. Yeah we have started well this season, but it’s one day at a time and we’ll just keep chipping away. We’ve got amazing staff, as I continue to say, and without them you just can’t do it.”
Jockey Corey Brown: “He took every part of the 1400m to get home, but in saying that they went fairly steady early. I know the leader looked like it strung them out but the group behind the leaders really banked up mid-race and he got up into the bridle a little bit. Quickened great from the 600m ... and he toughed it out well.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: When questioned concerning the early pace set by the leader, Harrykay, App. T Lovelock-Wiggins stated his instructions had been to lead and, whilst he knew the pace was genuine, he felt Harrykay was travelling comfortably within itself and, therefore, he elected not to endeavour to restrain the gelding. App. Lovelock-Wiggins was told in similar circumstances he would have been better served riding his mount more quietly from the barrier yet still complying with his instructions to lead, which would have allowed his mount to settle better in the early stages and as a result finish the race off stronger. A post race veterinary examination of Harrykay did not reveal any abnormalities.
When questioned, App. D Ganderton was unable to offer any explanation for the disappointing performance of Bacchanal Woman. A post race veterinary examination of Bacchanal Woman revealed the mare to have speedy cuts to the near-hind pastern, an abrasion to the mouth and was displaying a mild case of the thumps.
Trainer Mr K Dryden indicated that the mare had worked well leading into the race. Mr Dryden was advised of the report of the Club's Veterinary Officer and asked to advise the Stewards as to how Bacchanal Woman does subsequent to the event. A post race veterinary examination of Miss Marielle revealed the mare had a trickle of blood from the offside nostril due to a small wound.
