DOOMBEN: JANUARY 1: COLLESS BACK IN FAMILIAR TERRITORY COURTESY OF A TYPICALLY ASTUTE RIDE
By Graham Potter | Friday, January 2, 2015
WINNER: LEVER LEVER (4 b g Bel Danaro – Country Step). BM 75 Handicap – 2200m. Track: Good 4; Rail: Out 6m. Time 2.19.23 (carrying 54kg); Last 600m: 34.56. Second: Supercoach. Third: Highly Gentle Won by 0.20 lengths. Started favourite at $4.
Glen Colless has been easing his way back into action since returning from injury and it was only a matter of time before he got back into the winner’s enclosure.
That return came via a typically astute ride aboard LEVER LEVER. The field dawdled early before Supercoach made a move to set a lively target in the home straight, but Colless, with the willing co-operation of LEVER LEVER, had all options covered and the four-year-old duly reeled in the game Supercoach to claim the second victory of his lightly raced, ten race career.
WINNER FEEDBACK:
TRAINER MATTHEW DUNN:
“They were always going to go slow early and then someone was always going to take off at the 600m. He (Glen Colless) rode it well didn’t he. Had the muddling pace under control.
“Glen rode it like he had the best horse in the race. I think he was that today.
“He stays well. He is one of those horses that is going to get better … when he gets to a five-year-old probably … when he really toughens up.”
