By Graham Potter | Friday, January 2, 2015
WINNER: SMART CASH (5 b g Ad Valorem -Vizani). No Metro Wins Handicap (C, G & E) – 1050m. Track: Good 4; Rail: Out 6m. Time 1.00.84 (carrying 54kg); Last 600m: 34.42. Second: Foretoken; Third: River Spirit. Won by 1.30 lengths at a starting price of $3.60.
SMART CASH was out of action for eight months between January 17 and September 21, 2014.When he resumed he did so for a new stable and this was his sixth run, deep into his first preparation under the care of trainer Barry Lockwood.
His race record over those six starts now reads, three wins, two second placed and one third placed finish. Credit horse and trainer for both that winning strike-rate and the overall consistency that the gelding has shown since relocating to Queensland.
The result was never in doubt once Chris Whiteley gave his mount the green light early in the straight. It was a solid victory.
WINNER FEEDBACK:
JOCKEY CHRIS WHITELEY:
“It all depends on how he begins. This 1050m you just want to begin quick in these type of races with a lot of speed. “He began quickly ... and that made my job a lot easier. “We got over with some to follow. He came back and I left him there for a while to give him a breather. “At the top of the straight the ones in front of him couldn’t find any more so we just saw them off. “He did that at the Gold Coast when I won on him too. He finds that extra gear which allows him to put a gap on them which, even if they are coming at him at the end, makes it hard for them to chase him down.”
