DOOMBEN: JANUARY 1: ONE GREY BRINGS HIS WORK FORM TO THE RACES. HE IS NOW A FIVE-TIME WINNER
By Graham Potter | Friday, January 2, 2015
WINNER: ONE GREY (4 b g Grey Swallow - Template). 70 Handicap – 1200m. Track: Good 4; Rail: Out 6m. Time 1.10.61 (carrying 55.5kg); Last 600m: 35.02. Second: Party Spin; Third: Widow’s Walk Won by 0.10 lengths at a starting price of $15.
ONE GREY is now a five-time winner and he has won three of his last four starts. His trainer was confident going into this race. His rider was on a hungry (excuse the pun) comeback trail and yet the bay son of Grey Swallow was ultimately one that got away from most punters as he arrived, easy-to-back, at double figure odds.
Yes, he would have been swamped in another couple of strides, but that turned out to be more his main rivals problem then his own as the flying Party Spin and Widow’s Walk challenges, as good as their efforts were, ultimately came up short of the mark.
It was a good ride by Janette Johnson, who trainer Bryan Guy singled out for special mention. As can be seen in the race action photo, Johnson certainly gave her all in the closing stages, an effort that was instrumental in getting ONE GREY across the line.
WINNER FEEDBACK:
TRAINER BRYAN GUY:
“His work has been sensational and I did think he would win.
“I have worked the horse out. He can gallop but he was leaving it on the track. So I changed my tactics with him work-wise and Janette (Johnson) said he was just bucking his brand off.
“What I changed was … I now give him a gallop a long way away from when he is going to run. So he has a full week for his trot and canter.
“He is that sort of horse. We just had to work him out because he was showing his ability on the track … running sensational times but we had to get him to bring that to the races.
“Janette has done a very good job.
“She’s got two more winners to go now before she loses her 3kg claim in town. It’s been tough for her because she is so tall and is heavy, but she been has doing a good job.
“She never went away anywhere when she took a brief break from race-riding recently. She was still riding work, but he didn’t want to waste for a while. Her body virtually said it had had enough at that time with racing … so she wasn’t wasting but she was still at work and everything.
“Then she’s just gradually taken the weight off … and the weight off.
“She needs and deserves these little rewards along the way. It gives her a little kick-along.”
