SUNSHINE COAST, JANUARY 4: COLD BLOODED TAKES NO PRISONERS AS SHE RACES AWAY TO A CLINICAL VICTORY
By Graham Potter | Friday, January 9, 2015
WINNER: COLD BLOODED (4 ch m Dracula – Move Over). Maiden Handicap – 1600m. Track: Good 4; Rail: Out 8m. Time 1:38.77 (carrying 55.5kg); Last 600m: 35.35. Second: Southern Captain; Third: Miss Tristy. Won by 2.00 lengths at a starting price of $8.
The Brad Smith trained Cold Blooded built on her previous promising third placing to claim the first success of her career in her fifth start.
The chestnut did have work to do, having to chase from the worst of the draw, but once switched out into clear running halfway up the home straight it soon became obvious that she had her rivals covered.
Once she got to the front it was ‘race over’ and Cold Blooded comfortably extended her winning margin to a full two lengths at the line.
WINNER FEEDBACK:
TRAINER BRAD SMITH:
“I got the horse from Lisa and Glen Morton. A good thing about them is they don’t mind giving their horse’s time and she (Cold Blooded) has needed the time.” (*The four-year-old has only had five starts).
“She is still only on the small side. She is learning what the caper is all about. She never had much early speed but she can finish off real quick when there is a bit of pace up front.
“We got that today and the mile really suited her too. She finished off well here last start (when third, less than two lengths behind Just Keep Going over 1400m).
"She probably should have nearly run second if not won on that occasion if she had clear running but, yeah, we’ll take it today.
“Two starts ago we brought her here with the rail out ten and she never really got into it so there was a little bit of trepidation today (with the rail out 8m). We watched the first race and thought the track played pretty fair and so we gave her a good chance.”
JOCKEY TIM BELL:
“It is only a very little horse. She drew very wide so I snagged her back and went to the fence.
“She travelled well. Just sort of snuck through them ... weaved through the field. I got out when I needed to at the 300 and then sorted waited as long as I could before I hit the button.
“When I hit the button at the 150m she really raced on nicely.”
