SUNSHINE COAST, FEB 8: TWO WINS FROM LAST THREE STARTS FOR COLD BLOODED. UNBEATEN OVER 1600m
By Graham Potter | Sunday, February 8, 2015
WINNER: COLD BLOODED (4 ch m Dracula – Move Over). Class 1 Handicap – 1600m. Track: Soft 5; Rail: Out 8.5m. Time 1:38.15 (carrying 55.5kg); Last 600m: 36.69. Second: Razzling Dazzler; Third: Flarendi Won by 1.50 lengths at a starting price of $3.50.
The Brad Smith trained Cold Blooded made it two wins from her last three starts ... and maintained her unbeaten record over 1600m ... when she emphatically outgunned her nine rivals to claim her second career win.
The mare jumped second last and young apprentice Sairyn Fawke was content to allow his mount to lope along in that position in the early part ... some four lengths off the leader.
Even when Razzling Dazzler found a comfortable, uncontested lead down the back stretch Cold Blooded was not rushed. Instead, Fawke continued to bide his time, so much so that Cold Blooded had gone back to a clear last approaching the home turn, now spotting the leader some six lengths.
But then Fawke was done with the waiting. Coming into the turn he kept Cold Blooded on a strict inside line. Saving ground he quickly went past three rivals but then, critically, on straightening, Fawke angled Cold Blooded out across heels as he tacked onto the back of Flarendi who would take him into the race.
Another subtle switch off the back of Flarendi and the chase was on in earnest. At the 200m Razzling Dazzler still held sway, two lengths to Flarendi and three lengths to Cold Blooded.
At that stage it looked likely to be a solid three way contest but Cold Blooded’s smooth acceleration quickly changed the complexion of the race.
Within a matter of 100m ... with 100m still left to run ... Cold Blooded had swept past Flarendi before easily taking the measure of the game but tiring Razzling Dazzler and establishing a clearcut winning advantage.
From there it was just a question of how much Cold Blooded would win by. In the end the 1.50 margin of victory probably flattered Cold Blooded’s rivals, such was the authoritative nature of her win.
