MY CALL - MUNCE STABLE EXPANDS TO SUNSHINE COAST

By David Fowler | Tuesday, August 4, 2015

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Jockey-cum-trainer Chris Munce is not moving to the Sunshine Coast.

Munce dispelled the rumour although granting there is an element of truth in it.

“We will still be operating from Brisbane but I will be taking some boxes adjacent to Corbould Park because I’m running out of room here, “Munce pointed out.

Munce operates from two stables in suburban Hendra but “the house full” sign is up with horses on his books needing a stable.

“It’s actually a good place to be in,” he pointed out.

Like many, Munce has applied for infield stables poised to be built at Eagle Farm.

“The Eagle Farm complex will be a wonderful facility on so many fronts," Munce pointed out

And although a hard marker, Munce has been “happy” with his first six month results as a trainer.

Tony Gollan made an excellent point when he was my guest on Radio TAB’s Mondays’ Experts this week.

When questioned what was the best path to take on prizemoney cuts, Gollan offered a different view.

“Let’s try and grow the pie to at least offset those cuts if they’re going to happen,” he said.

This makes sense. Even allowing for the Eagle Farm situation, thoroughbred turnover has raised some eyebrows in recent times.

I was armed with the baseball bat but was left searching for superlatives.

We live in a cynical world so we could be somewhat forgiven if we thought Satirical Lass wouldn’t carbon copy her July 11 romp at Doomben last weekend.

Remember that five length demolition in 1:8.66.

Well she didn’t carbon copy it. Instead she outpeaked the peak, running an astonishing 1:17.75 for the 1350 metres.

Only a handful break the 1:18 barrier.

Her pattern of sustained speed from start to finish breaks her rivals hearts.

These brilliant performances are light years ahead of what she could previously achieve.

Can’t wait to see her on Saturday week.

Congratulations to the Brisbane Racing Club for winning a Queensland Business History Award.

It was presented at the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame black-tie knees-up last week for collecting and preserving its history at Eagle Farm and Doomben.

The BRC’s heritage collection is housed in the Old Tote Museum at Eagle Farm and the Archives and Library at Doomben.

And, finally, a suggestion to the Brisbane Racing Club.

How about naming some unsponsored races after some stalwart racegoers.

Patrons who have turned up at Eagle Farm or Doomben year after year, keeping the attendance figures ticking over.

Let’s start with Eagle Farm trackman Les Green, fighting fit in his late eighties, and rarely missing a city meet.

It’s a small touch but one that would mean a lot.

Over to you Directors!
