IPSW AUG 20 - CORNWALL PARK IN EYE-CATCHING WIN

By Graham Potter | Monday, August 24, 2009

The Alan Bailey trained Cornwall Park made it two from two with an eye-catching win first-up at Ipswich following fourteen months away from the action.

The son of Pentire won by a nose on debut in June 2008 and he came back all the stronger and better for his time out to easily account for his opposition, beating the more fancied Predominator home by a comfortable 1.80 margin. Chances are he won’t stop here.

Ipswich, August 20, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 1.5m.
Class 2 (4yo & Up) Handicap - 1350m. Time: 1-20.61.
1 Cornwall Park; 2 Predominator; 3rd - Afleet Boy.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Alan Bailey: “He is a very nice horse this bloke ... a really nice horse. We had him all ready to go and he got an infection in his back joint. We had to get it flushed out and flushed out ... and we had to give him time off. We have got a good opinion of him. We think he is going to make a really nice racehorse.

“We thought he would make a really good three-year-old. We had him in and he was going really good when he got the infection in his back joint ... that would have to be six months ago ... it was well before the carnival. We were getting him ready for the carnival when it happened.

“We had to abort that plan and put him back out and give him time ... but, no, he is a really nice horse.”

Jockey Glen Colless: “He hadn’t run for like fourteen months or something. In his first start in a race he only won by a nose, but it was the first time he’d ever seen grass. We hadn’t trialled him or anything. He’d only had a jump-out on sand and then we took him to Doomben and he won, so we’ve always had a good opinion of the horse.

“He had a few little hiccups and Alan (Bailey) has taken his time with him and given him a couple of trials. You know, he raced really good today. He over-raced in the middle stages and still finished off good.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Cornwall Park): 3.80 in to 3.40 out to 3.60.
Favourite (Predominator): 1.90 out to 2.00. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Red Rocker (N. Thomas) was tightened for room and became unbalanced at the start between Predomiantor (L. Cassidy) and Heza Outlaw (R. Goltz), both of which shifted ground. Baldy Mount (R. Wiggins) jumped outwards at the start, making heavy contact with the outside barrier partition and lost ground. Cornwall Park (G. Colless) jumped inwards at the start and made contact with Tiggeroo (S. Drake)

Baldy Mount pulled hard in the early stages of the race and near the 1200m the saddle shifted forward, placing jockey R. Wiggins at a distinct disadvantage for the remainder of the race, and as a result near the 700m shifted out, forcing Tiggeroo wider on the track. Heza Outlaw over-raced in the early and middle stages.
