DOOMBEN, AUGUST 8: DAVID FOWLER SELECTS ...
By David Fowler | Saturday, August 8, 2015
Form assessed for a good 3 (perfect surface).
RACE 1:
KAREEMS EDGE (9) is a value chance in the opener. Always shown a splash of ability and comes off a tough Taree win with 60kg. LAUTERBRUNNEN (3) has been solid at the end of 1350m past 2 here but I have a slight reservation at the mile. Colless and the good gate can try and counter that. POLYNIKES (5) maps well and is a definite top 3 hope. Rough chances 7 and 10.
RACE 2:
Marked VIENNA QUEEN (3) the best bet of the day. Good fresh, quick with a good gate, she will either boxseat or lead. IKE’S LEGACY (1) is a backmarker but runs well at the start of his preparations while I AM BOSS (5) is generally consistent and is suited back on a firmer track. Rough chances 2 and 12.
RACE 3:
JIMMY SAYS YES (4) is hard to beat. Unsuited past 2 Sydney runs on the wet and ran a beauty this this track and trip last campaign. Secures excellent run from the rails marble. KALANDULA (2) is a strong finisher and likes this track and trip. GLENBAWN DAME (3) rolls forward and is honest. A must for exotics Rough chances 1, 5, 6 and 9.
RACE 4:
Even lot. RELAMPAGO (6) might be the best gamble on both totes with the good alley and the 3kg claim. Wasn’t far away is a similar race at the Sunshine Coast after covering ground. MOST IMPORTANT (2) won that race and goes well again today from the good barrier. TAILLEVENT (3) was afforded no favours in Doomben midweek win against older horses. Rough chances 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.
RACE 5:
Small field and too many questions for me. At least SEEKING MORE (2) always puts in and maps to get the right run. Excellent Doomben record. KENCELLA (2) is a Sydney sprinter and expected to lead. Back on dry suits. THE STOREMAN (5) is honest under these conditions. Rough chances 1, 4 and 8.
RACE 6:
MORE ENERGY (9) will be hard to beat here, relying on a G.Colless ride to overcome the wide gate. Soft win at Sunshine Coast after didn’t “get” the 2200m here. The 2020m is tailormade. WALHAAN (5) hasn’t raced for a month but stays well and has to be considered. WALK TO THE BAR (3) has his first middle distance attempt today but I’m fairly confident he will run the trip. Rough chances 4, 8 and 11.
RACE 7:
STEEL ZIP (4) keeps running well this campaign and has struck a suitable race. J.Lloyd is a good booking. CHOICE BRO (1) is on the seven days back-up but will find the line strongly. Won’t be surprised to see BUSH AVIATOR (7) run better 2nd-up with a soft lead. Rough chances 5, 6 and 10.
RACE 8:
LE VAL (1) is a talented type who has been plagued with problems. Only his 10th start today and if he runs to his sparkling 1st-up win, he can score again. FORGOTTEN YEARS (9) maps to get the run of the race and went well latest Sunshine Coast 2nd. BELEGIC (7) can run a race at odds 1st-up. Rough chances 2, 3 and 12.
BEST BET: VIENNA QUEEN (Race 2).
BEST EACHWAY: RELAMPAGO (Race 4).
BEST ROUGHIE: KAREEMS EDGE (Race).
QUADRELLA: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 / 3, 6, 9 / 1, 4, 5, 7, 10 / 1, 7, 9.
