Forget all those fancy prices they bet on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
There is no risk the “real McCoy” is still when the betting opens after the conclusion of the previous race.
Put it this way, not many drifters win and plenty of firmers do.
And sometimes the firms are dramatic.
It’s still the best barometer.
Two good cases in point from Doomben last Saturday.
Architect was smashed on all totes (2.8, 3.1, 2.8). Did you expect that ?
Steel Zip was smashed on all totes (2.8,2.9,2.8). Did you expect that? He was also a 3.6 to 3.2 firmer on track.
Both won like even money chances.
Far from me saying they couldn’t win but it’s the volume of money that always puzzles me.
What do “they” know?

The second at Randwick was another good example.
Two chances on paper, one was 3.5 to 2.3, the other was 2.5 to 3.2
No guessing who blitzed them with the other straggling home 10 lengths in arrears.
What did “they” know?

I was amazed how many horses that started at Beaudesert last Thursday were locally trained.
I shouldn’t have been. The right mail suggests 270 are on the books and the “house full” sign has gone up.
Expect the track to remain a viable TAB provincial circuit, even when Eagle Farm returns to the fold.

It was reported last week in the print media that the Awards nights are back on.
This was apparently a “suggestion” at a “consultation” meeting.
But the only mention of the Racing Awards nights on the RQ website are their postponement, delivered on July 23.
So are they, or are they not, back on?

I’ll back Le Val wherever it goes.
Trainer Noel Doyle is currently sifting through local and interstate programs to determine his next move.
Few horses would shoulder 59kg, spot them six lengths start, come the widest and still win in a sub 34 sectional.
Outstanding prospect.
