THE RUN OF THE RACE:
Only four runners faced the starter here with the Magic Millions Classic winner Capitalist (who was unbeaten in three starts) all the rage, dominating the betting to start at the restrictive odds of $1.22.
The son of Written Tycoon jumped well enough but the $18 debut winner Kiss And Make up quickly signalled his intention to take the race to the favourite and he quickly claimed a narrow lead over Capitalist who tracked the frontrunner, seemingly comfortably to the turn.
Halfway up the straight though any level of comfort for the favourite disappeared as Kiss And Make up kicked away strongly with Capitalist not finding enough to pressure the son of More Than Ready who held Capitalist to a comfortable 2.30 lengths margin at the line.
Weatherly ($6.50) and Tessara ($17) both closed up slightly mid race, after being well back early, but they were never a factor in the straight when finishing third and fourth respectively.
*Since the start of the year Kiss And Make Up has now won two barrier trials (both by clear-cut margins). He then won on debut as a $3.50 favourite over 1200m at Canterbury before adding this Group 2 success to his resume in only his second start.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
TRAINER GAI WATERHOUSE:
“A love throwing the cat amongst the pigeons ... and what a cat! Isn’t he a cool dude. I had Singo (John Singleton) on the phone today. We kissed and made up (referring to a past incident) and we wouldn’t have the horse if we hadn’t kissed and made up.
“The other horse, Capitalist, was at his side niggling at him early but he was a man on a mission. He just stayed on his course the whole way. That is what you need for the Slipper, It’s very exciting. I’m absolutely thrilled for the group of owners. He is a beautiful colt. He did it so easily.
"On to the Slipper."
JOCKEY KERRIN MCEVOY:
“I think it is evident to see he has come along in leaps and bounds since his debut win.
“He is very tradesmanlike. He does his work. He knows what he is doing. Today he was a bit more switched on going to the barriers and he gave me a nice ride throughout. He was quickening up the rise so it was a good effort.
“The Slipper opens up now doesn’t it? Capitalist is obviously a very hard nut to crack but a week is a long time in a two-year-old’s season. We know that, so it has just opened up a little bit. This horse is genuine. He is a real trier and he might improve a little bit more going into the Slipper. It’s going to be exciting to be on him.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
WEATHERLY - slow to begin (2L).
CAPITALIST - when questioned regarding the performance, rider B Shinn stated, after the colt commenced well and he took up a position outside the leader, Kiss And Make Up. He added that, with approximately eight weeks between runs, Capitalist was a little fresh and inclined to over-race. As a consequence of over-racing throughout the early and middle stages, the colt failed to finish the race off strongly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be mildly sore in front, more particularly its off foreleg.
When interviewed, co-trainer Mr Peter Snowden stated that Capitalist has had no soundness issues. Mr Snowden was asked to provide a veterinary clearance prior to the colt's next race start. Mr Snowden indicated that he would have the stable veterinary surgeon examine Capitalist on Monday, 7 Mar 2016 and he would report to the Stewards on the result.

* UPDATE: After his defeat in the Todman Capitalist went from being joint favourite for the Golden Slipper out to odds of $11. Today (Monday), two days after the race co-trainer confirmed that Capitalist is receiving treatment for muscle soreness in his back. The horse is not lame, which was the immediate concern post-race on Saturday.
Snowden also said the colt trotted and cantered on Mondaymorning . He stated he was confident Capitalist would not miss any work in the lead-up to the Slipper. Stewards said Capitalist would still have to undergo an inspection before the race.
