EF AUG 26 - PROTO OUTGUNS MOSTLYMEN
By Graham Potter | Friday, August 28, 2009
Eagle Farm, August 26, 2009. Track - Good 3. Rail - out 10m. Maiden Plate (Set Weights) - 1000m. Time: 59-51. 1 Proto; 2 Mostlymen; 3 Bian.
The Graham Banks trained Proto had shown to good advantage when starting at odds of $21,00 on debut and that second placing was deemed good enough to give the gelding a chance in town.
The lightly raced four-year-old showed plenty of speed early and the race developed into a straight two-horse contest between Proto and the well supported Mostlymen. The latter cornered a touch uncomfortably and Proto was able to seize the initiative, which he never relinquished as he maintained a stout gallop all the way to the line to hold off the main fancy, who was coming back at the winner on the line, by 0.30 lengths.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Jockey Kristie Banks: “Yeah, he jumped well and he travelled well coming to the corner. I sort of just popped off the fence and the favourite (racing on Proto’s outside) kinda was a bit green too and ... yeah, my one sort of outboxed him to the line.
“I’d done a few jump outs on him before he raced and I said to dad, yeah he goes pretty good, so I wasn’t really surprised how well he has performed in both of his starts.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Proto): 4.80 out to 5.00 in to 4.40. Favourite (Mostlymen): 1.60 out to 2.05. Finished second.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Bian (A. Spinks) was slow to begin. Mostlymen (S. Katsidis) commenced to hang out shortly after the start and made the home turn awkwardly. The gelding also hung out approaching the finish line. A post race veterinary examination of Mostlymen failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
