MY CALL - A UBET EXPERIMENT WORTH KEEPING AN EYE ON AND RACING.COM IS STARTING TO GROW SOME MUSCLE

By David Fowler | Tuesday, May 24, 2016

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

An interesting development in greyhound racing could provide a catalyst for their thoroughbred counterparts.

If my mail is correct, Racing Queensland is poised to begin livestreaming of the non TAB Capalaba greyhound meetings each Saturday afternoon.

Was it a coincidence then that Ubet provided a fixed odds service on two feature races at the same track last Saturday?

The rumour mill has it the old Gold Coast greyhound semaphore board has been rescued from the waste bin and sent to the suburban straight track to sexy up the livestreaming exercise.

Racing Queensland currently livestreams its barrier trials through the Ustream service provider.

The Ubet experiment was more than interesting. I can't recall the operator providing fixed odds on races but no traditional TAB coverage.

Am I joining some dots too fast?

Too much non TAB thoroughbred racing has been a complaint for many years.

Could these clubs provide a return to Ubet, and the industry itself, with a livestreamed service that has the offering of fixed odds?

Very early days but it's worth monitoring the Capalaba experiment.

Another interesting "vision" development was Racing.com's securing the rights to Hong Kong racing.

There will be far more bells and whistles than what is offered up at Sky Racing.

After treading water at the shallow end, Racing.com is started to grow muscle and flex its arms.

To suggest its surrounding South Australia racing like a piranha would be an understatement.

And I doubt a blind eye is being turned to the Sunshine State.

Why did both the Sunshine Coast and Beaudesert race on Sunday?

Why will both Gatton and the Sunshine Coast race on Sunday June 12 ?

No opinion offered but just an answer from Racing Queensland would suffice.

Everyone had a good gander at the Eagle Farm track last Thursday and everyone put in their two bob's worth.

I know zilch about preparing racetrack surfaces so I stayed schtum.

But from a punting perspective, I will say sitting wide might not be such a drawback with the new camber on the turns. This was reasonably evident in the five barrier trials run at the soft opening.

On another matter, will the Brisbane Racing Club archive the current race records and start afresh when they jump from the barriers on Oaks day?

What did we learn from Saturday?

A gear change didn't halt Hauraki's non winning sequence while class (read Our Ivanhoe) generally rises to the top.

The incessant chatter of how competitive the Fred Best Classic would be rang hollow when Counterattack sat three wide and whooped them.

There were more bruised egos out of the same race than Blackbookers. Too Good To Refuse was the exception and he remains the best Stradbroke outsider.

Dawnie Perfect, Alaskan Rose and Dulverton left Doomben happy in the knowledge the Queensland Oaks is back at the 2400m distance and at Eagle Farm.

Kiwi filly Provocative will win the Oaks by a country mile but she must also exhibit pole vaulting expertise to actual make the field.

Snippets Land enjoyed his 15 minutes of fame in the BRC Sprint. Those behind him didn't and more than likely won't this Winter.

The nominal favourite for the J.J.Atkins is still the best guessing game in town.

Flemington placegetter Jaws Of Steel could be an Atkins wildcard.
