DOOM AUG 29 - BACK TO BACK WINS FOR CITIWYSE

By Matthew Grimson and Graham Potter | Monday, August 31, 2009

Doomben, August 29, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 5.5m.
NMW Handicap - 1350m. Time: 1-20.02.
1 Citywise; 2 Fasilyev Dancer; 3 Shudule Gee.

The Peter Fleming trained Citiwyse made it two-in-a-row with a second, strong win in eleven days.

Apprentice jockey Owen Turpin again did the honours in the saddle. He had Citiwyse back in midfield early but held the rail position from his number one draw and saved ground on the turn.

Straightening in fifth place, Turpin switched Citiwyse out for a clear run at the top of the straight. At that stage Fasliyev Dancer was closing up quickly on the long time leader Schedule Gee and these two runners had got away from the balance of the field.

As Citiwyse gradually built momentum, Fasliyev Dancer reeled in Schedule Gee, but no sooner had Fasliyev Dancer gained the advantage then she in turn was shot down by the faster finishing Citiwyse who arrived under an inch perfect ride from Turpin to steal the chocolates.

Citiwyse has now won four of his ten starts.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Peter Fleming: “Yeah, it was a nice win. I was getting a bit more impatient than the jockey coming to the furlong but, yeah, everything turned out well.

“We wanted to use our gate (the number one barrier) a little bit if we could, you know, so I thought he would be in the first half-a-dozen, but it didn’t turn out that way. The horse relaxed well and found the line well. Everything sort of folded into his hands. He is a horse on the way up. I’m pretty happy with the win today.

“No, there are no immediate plans. It’s the first time he has had such a short back-up. He usually has a month or so in-between runs. He had a lot of bad luck with the wet tracks through the winter ... here on 10000 day and on Coloundra Cup day. He’s just been immature physically, you know ... he just didn’t come through a run that well. He’s just starting to strengthen up now he’s turned four.”

Jockey Owen Turpin: “Mr Fleming (trainer Peter Fleming) pulled the right string today and it worked out well. He pulled up good from the run last week. Nice alley ... didn’t rev him up early ... travelled beautifully and he got the run. I still stuck hard to the rail until I got to the 300m. Then I popped out and got a nice, clear run from there and he found the line strong. So, well done to the horse.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Bringelly, which broke through the barriers, was examined by the club's veterinary surgeon and cleared to race.

Bernado (L. Cassidy) slipped behind and lost considerable ground on jumping away. L. Cassidy reported following the race he was concerned the horse may have injured itself and consequently did not place Bernado under significant pressure during the race and the horse took no competivive part.

Havayarn (G. Colless) was slow to begin. Leaving the 800m, Desert Hayil (C. McIver) had to be checked when racing between Bradfield (D. Brown), which was initially taken out slightly by Shifteman (A. Spinks), and Cossack Court (B. Pengelly), which when racing ungenerously shifted in and away from Shudule Gee (M. Speers). Whilst Shifteman had a tendency to hang out, B. Pengelly, rider of Cossack Court, was nevertheless given the benefit of the doubt as to whether he could have taken greater measures to prevent his mount shifting ground. Shifteman hung out off the rails leaving the 600m and near the 500m made heavy contact with Desert Hayil.

Rounding the home turn, Justin Case was held up on the heels of Roy’s Legacy (K. Pope) and shortly after straightening, shifted out when endeavouring to improve and had to be steadied away from the heels of Beautiful Day and the horse was unable to obtain clear running until leaving the 200m.

On straightening, Desert Hayil had to be checked when racing between Dellamby (J. Bowditch), which shifted in, and Shifteman, which hung out. Bringelly (C. Reith), which was following, was also checked, losing ground. Trainer B. Brown's attention was drawn to the horse's racing manners and he indicated that the horse would now be spelled.

A short distance later, Shifteman was tightened for room by Cossack Court, which shifted out away from Citiwyse (O. Turpin).

Approaching the 200m, Roy’s Legacy (K. Pope) had to be steadied when tightened for room between Dane Merchant (M. Hellyer), which was tiring, and Havayarn (G. Colless), which shifted in and away from Beautiful Day (R. Wiggins). Post race veterinary examinations of Cossack Court and Bernado failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
