WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, JUNE 4
By Darren Winningham | Friday, June 3, 2016
I have done the tips with the expectation of a heavy rated track here. As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Well here goes back at Eagle Farm - the first time in two years. The last time I was here I watched the late Tim Bell ride Tinto in the Oaks and two other Group winners on the day. Oaks Day always provides great competitive racing. This year we have a new dimension with the new Eagle Farm track and the pending “weather event” that is supposed to hit us all day Saturday. I would say have a look at a couple of the races before you load up!
A final congratulations to Zac Purton for riding his 600th winner in Hong Kong on Wednesday night. I love Hong Kong racing and it is great to see Zac being so successful there. A final mention to Kerrin McEvoy – what a Winter Carnival! Riding all three Group 1 winners so far! Will it continue tomorrow?
I am a little flat after NSW were unlucky on Wednesday night - but as usual we will regroup and turn up in 19 days to beat the other mob on their home turf!

Race 1 – The Phoenix (Listed Race)
Archives (1) was dominant at Doomben the other week. Jericho (3) and Redouble (4) filled the placings in the same race and probably will run well here again. I have had a wrap on the Toby Edmonds trained Real Classic (7) and I think it will improve over the 1400 metres. Could be a rough chance to beat the favoured runners.
Selections: 1-3-4-7. Rough chance 8.

Race 2 - Lightning Handicap (Listed Race)
Felines (4) from the Kris Lees stable at Newcastle is a real mud lark and runs well over this distance winning 6 from 9. Into the Red (1) won well first up from a spell and is an honest gelding. Has a good second up record as well. Espiritu (8) and Gojo Mimo (9) always race well fresh. Executed (13) has drawn well, down in weight and may lead this lot and could be hard to run down at big odds with in form Anthony Allen on board.
Selections: 4-1-9-13. Rough chance 8.

Race 3 – Eagle Farm Cup (Group 2) My heart is torn here after watching Chris O’Brien ride Mighty Lucky (1) home last week to win the Lord Mayor’s Cup. This week Tegan Harrison takes over and the horse usually improves with short spaced races. Maurus (4) is a real mud lark and loves the 2200 metres of this race. I would like to say a dead heat here but let’s tip it on top. Col ‘n’ Lil (6) steps up in grade again but was great winning last start and could see young apprentice Josh Oliver ride his first Group race winner! Volkstok ‘n’ Barrell (5) is another horse that has been racing without much luck and will be suited by the longer distance here.
Selections: 4-1-5-6

Race 4 – Daybreak Lover (Listed Race)
Sold for Song (11) has Jimmy Orman back on and loves the wet tracks. Kimberley Star (12) from the Gai Waterhouse stables is a mud lark and has been racing well. The Virginian (9) looks promising and steps up in grade here. Blueberry Hill (2) has shown not much this preparation – but if the track is a genuine ‘heavy’ rating it will probably improve and could fill a place. The Tony Gollan trained Salmanazar (10) look promising as well and steps up in grade – it is sure to get a nice run with Hugh Bowman aboard.
Selections: 11-12-9-2. Rough chance 10

Race 5 – Juanmo Stakes (Listed Race)
A tough race to kick off the quaddie. Not much wet weather form exposed here. I am going for a roughie in Serenade (18) with Tim Clark riding and Michael Moroney training. Moroney always seems to win a race or two over the Brisbane Carnivals and maybe this is the one to put the first notch on the board. Shades of Bella (11) is trained by Darren Weir who is having an amazing run of success in Brisbane and Australia wide with his horses – Dean Yendall makes the trip north to ride the horse. Miss Cover Girl (2) has drawn poorly again this week. She is an honest mare who performs well and has 3 wins from 4 starts third up from a spell. Godolphin is represented by Alucinari (6) that won a nice race first up at Scone. I think if you like something else stay with it as this is a tough race!
Selections: 18-11-2-6. Rough chance 10.

Race 6 – Mirvac QTC Cup (Group 2 Race)
I declared Kaepernick (6) first up from a spell at Scone and he destroyed that field! I am not sure how it will go on a ‘heavy’ track but it does have good form on a ‘soft’ track and has a tremendous second up record with two wins and a second from three starts. Spill the Beans (11) ran a tremendous race at Scone in the Inglis Guineas only going down in the shadow of the post. Snippets Land (4) won well two weeks ago. Trubia (12) is racing well and is down in weight again here. Meanwhile Sure and Fast (13) is the mud lark of the field and is to be ridden by Michael Hellyer – on a personal note it would be amazing to see “Muppy” Hellyer get his first Group race win as he is a hard working young man. There must be some confidence in the Paul Murray stable as the horse has been backed from $41 to $14 this week.
Selections: 6-11-4-9. Rough chances 12 and 13.

Race 7 – 2016 Treasury Casino and Hotel Queensland Oaks (Group 1 Race)
Good quality field assembled for this race – I think they will be seven or eight abreast at the 150metre mark with the best stayer breaking away in the final 50 metres. I have said all along Kebede (3) looks a great Oaks type. Sebring Sally (6) and Self Esteem (7) look like they can stay all day as well. Dawnie Perfect (10) has Group 1 winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy aboard shooting for his fourth feature race win in as many weeks. Chabaud (2) trained by Robert Smerdon has been up a while but looks a real tough type and will handle the wet conditions if they arrive. Good luck to all owners, trainers and jockeys in this prestigious race.
Selections: 7-3-10-6. Rough chances 2 and 4.

Race 8 – FKG Group Spear Chief Handicap (Listed Race)
Well where you start here? If you are alive in the quaddie I would hope you have the field going for you. The Freedman team that has tasted success at the Winter Carnival saddles up Hi World (1) who really loves wet tracks – has some gear changes with blinkers off and a tongue tie and visor on for the first time. Religify (2) lost a plate last start and nearly won the BRC Darley Sprint and should be hard to beat here from a nice draw. The Waller stable seems to make a habit of winning these last races over the Carnival. Federal (6) loves the wet and was unlucky in the run last start at Scone finishing behind Clearly Innocent and Music Magnate. Tan Tat Diamond (13) is back to a more suitable distance after running over some shorter races lately – Steve O’Dea deserves a change of luck and may be able to knock the more fancied runners out here.
Selections 2-6-1-13. Rough chance 11 and 17.

Jockeys Challenge – Tough day here, but I am confident a NSW jockey will win! I think you can take James McDonald, Hugh Bowman or Tim Clark here for a nice result. May even end in a triple dead heat!
