WINNO'S WINNERS: RANDWICK, OCTOBER 1
By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 30, 2016
Was in great form last week early at Rosehill and then fell away – hopefully I can put in a solid performance this week. The track looks like being good at the moment – but there is a forecast for heavy rain. The rail is out 3m the entire course. We get to see the first of the two year old races this season in Sydney on the program. Sydney Grand Final weekend as well …. I am tipping the Storm by 8 points.
NB *As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Race 1
Chain of Fools (1) won a trial by a big space but in a reasonable time. I like the final 600m time and think that under pressure in the race she should race well. The obvious danger is Jorda (5) from the Godolphin stable with James McDonald on board – the filly has been well supported currently around $2.30. The John Thompson trained Greater Good (4) won her trial well and Blake Shinn retains the ride. He seems to have a knack of finding a good two year old over recent years.
Selections: 1-5-4-8.

Race 2
Condor Heroes (2) has looked the goods in trials and won in the quickest time of the day – looks like he can gallop! Khan (5) looks the hardest one to beat drawn barrier 1, trained by Snowden team,Blake Shinn aboard and then syndicated through James Harron Bloodstocks ... now this has been a winning team! Piracy (9) is drawn wide but has had a good trial. Overall this is an open race with many chances – pick one back it and good luck!
Selections: 2-5-9-7 rough chance 1.

Race 3
The one to beat is the Raw Impulse (4) – the Victorian raider trained by Darren Weir and to be ridden by Craig Williams. It’s Somewhat (1) normally races well third up from a spell and he gets the opportunity this week to show his true potential in this race. Hi World (3) looked disappointing last weekend. I am giving him a chance this week – undefeated at the Randwick track and McEvoy to ride.
Selections: 4-1-3-2.
***************************************************************************************************
Race 4
Bring me the Bling (6) - I tipped last week and I feel that this week she will improve on last week’s run. The danger Octavian Augustus (3) has been well supported in the early markets and does have the Chris Waller polish. Overall not an exciting race – but I am sure that it will be hotly contested.
Selections: 6-3-4-8.
****************************************************************************************************
Race 5
The race looks a match race between Astern (1) and Capitalist (2). Astern has been amazing since resuming from a spell with two dynamic wins, both times dominating the opposition. Capitalist really didn’t fire when resuming – has had some serious work and two recent barrier trials and will strip fitter and pose a massive danger here this week. Russian Revolution (4) is the stable mate of Capitalist and has won three in a row – can he lower the colours of the two favourites for the race – stay tuned!
Selections: 1-2-4-5.
***************************************************************************************************
Race 6 – Flight Stakes (Group 1)
Yankee Rose (1) just was terrible first up and steps up this week to 1600m – it is $1.90 – it is my lay of the day! I am tipping the inform Skylight Glow (3) who should be well suited third up here this week. Sezanne (5) flew home in the Tea Rose Stakes and will appreciate the longer distance of 1600m – some good value here if they can knock off the favourite.
Selections: 3-5-6-1.

Race 7 – Epsom Handicap (Group 1)
This is an open race – if you like one get on it and into it! I was tipping Mighty Lucky (5) – it is $51 – has the regular rider Chris O’Brien and he is wasting to ride him at 54.5kgs – he will be coming at them late! If I tipped him on top the punters would think that my good friend David Salmon and I have lost our marbles – being a Gosford lad I do have a sentimental desire to see the seven year old win this weekend. So if I tip him on top you will probably all think I need to be committed – but make sure you put him in your exotic bets! In the end I have settled on Happy Clapper (4) who has an amazing record third up – loves the track and has the services of Brenton Avdulla. Hauraki (2) has been in tremendous form and deserves a chance to win his first Group 1 race. Then you have the Darren Weir trained Palentino (1) who won so impressively last start at Flemington beating Black Heart Bart who came out last week and destroyed the field in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes. Then you must put in the super impressive Mackintosh (8) who won the Theo Marks last start so well after being well supported. An open field and a great race in 2016.
Selections: 4-2-8-1 rough chance 5.

Race 8 – Metropolitan (Group 1)
An open field this year with $4.60 the field. The favourite is Antonio Giuseppe (12) who drops 8 kilograms from its last start but steps up to Group 1 company for the first time – he is looking for six wins in a row here. I can’t find a spot for him in my top four. I am going with the Brisbane Winter Carnival form and tipping Sir John Hawkwood (5) – Blake Spriggs is on board and he has a great affiliation with the eight year old gelding – this is his chance to break through for a Group 1 win. Allergic (8) has been consistent and drops 6.5 kilograms after winning the Group 3 Queens Cup last week – he can certainly stay and has a great record at Randwick. Who Shot Thebarman (1) must be ready to show something this preparation. He will need to perform well if he wants to head to Melbourne for the bigger spring carnival races. Magic Hurricane (4) won the race last year and has had a similar preparation to get him ready for this years’ assignment.
Selections: 5-8-1-4 rough chance 12.

Race 9
English (13) was unlucky last start getting caught wide and having no luck. I am hoping that Tommy Berry can give her a better run this week and watch out – she could destroy this field. Kaepernick (11) will be coming home hard again and will be in the finish for sure. Then you have the impressive Takedown (4) that won the Shorts so well first up. Will be handy again – drawn barrier 2 and has a jockey change with Blake Shinn steering the gelding for the first time. Regular rider of Takedown, Tim Clark, rides Southern Legend (12) for Les Bridge – he has four wins from five starts on the gelding. This is a great race - I reckon there will be five or six across the track at the finish all within a length of each other.
Selections 13-11-4-12 rough chance 14.
