EF SEPT 05 - SOUTHERLY IMPACT WINS AS HE LIKES

By Matthew Grimson and Graham Potter | Monday, September 7, 2009

Eagle Farm, September 5, 2009.
2MW Handicap - 1200m. Time: 1-10.90.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 1m.
1 Southerly Impact; 2 German Chocolate; 3 Albert Cadabra.

The Donald Baker trained Southerly Impact made light work of backing up from last week (where he finished second to the useful Sommersea Drive) when he trounced his opposition in no uncertain terms to come home alone a full 5.00 lengths clear of the second placed German Chocolate.

The big, long-striding gelding tracked Tornadic Sky until the turn. Southerly Impact, in turn, was tracked by German Chocolate who had the favourite Blackwoods Choice right on his tail as the runners lined up seemingly ready to join issue in the final chase home.

That anticipated battle quickly became a non-event when apprentice jockey Owen Turpin stepped on the accelerator. Southerly Impact simply left the others standing and the result was never in doubt once the six-year-old kicked clear early in the straight. He romped in leaving the others to pick up the crumbs.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Jockey Owen Turpin: “Yeah I knew he was going to travel well the whole race. Straight after the gates ... he has a habit of not missing the kick when he’s right for it. So he travelled lovely and he just won easy.

“He was travelling too good to not win. He’s feeling well within himself and he travelled through the whole race. Just off the pace or with the pace, that’s how he likes to race. He doesn’t like to be crowded. He put in a very good sprint today. Very happy with that.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Southerly Impact): 4.20 out to 4.60.
Favourite (Blackwoods Choice): 3.70 out to 4.00.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
The starting time of this race was rescheduled to 1.17 pm due to K. Pope requiring medical attention from the ambulance officers and club doctor. K. Pope was subsequently transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

Ollie Vollie (C. McIver) jumped away awkwardly. Light Red (C. Reith) and Blackwoods Choice (J. Byrne) bumped on jumping away.

Approaching the first turn, Light Red, when caught wide, shifted in and bumped Albert Cadabra (M. Speers). Near the 500m, Blackwoods Choice shifted out to improve and bumped Albert Cadabra. J. Byrne, rider of Blackwoods Choice, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
