WINNO'S WINNERS: RANDWICK, OCTOBER 8

Well what a grand weekend last weekend – a few winners – declared Sir John Hawkwood in the Metropolitan and I was very happy to see Blake Spriggs ride his first Group 1 winner. In other news, how good was it to see the Brisbane Winter Carnival horses dominate the races lately in Sydney – for instance last week there were four winners out of the Brisbane program. These included It’s Somewhat – Hauraki – Sir John Hawkwood and Takedown. All at decent prices as well.

Race 1

Luiza (8) from the Waller stable looks a nice type winning a trial easily recently. The Hawkes team has Showtime (6) engaged here and Tommy Berry rides the colt. I think this is a solid quinella in the opening race.

Selections: 8-6-3-1.

Race 2

Invincibella (2) is well placed in this grade – Tommy Berry swaps saddles in this race to ride the Waller horse. Octavian Augustus (5) should see Waller quinella the race. The Godolphin trained Pecans (8) makes me nuts to tip the trifecta in order here.

Race 3

Hipparchus (5) ran well first up – has a nice second up record and I think it will be hard to beat here. That means an early treble to the Waller stable! What price can I get that this occurs? More to Gain (6) ran enormous last start narrowly beaten by Antonio Giuseppe who came out last week and ran second in the Metropolitan. Balmain Boy (8) is third up this week here and should be ready to show his best.

Race 4

Flitero (6) from the Matthew Dunn stable looks well placed here – Glyn Schofield takes the ride. Tye Angland rides Shotgun Roulette (7) who looked unlucky two weeks ago behind Distinctive Look (1) who he meets again this week better at the weights. Mysticism (5) ran a great race last start at Doomben narrowly beaten by Sagaronne – prior to that run the run in the 2016 Grafton Guineas was enormous.

Selections: 6-7-5-1.

Race 5

My Giuliano (5) is looking for a hat trick of wins here and looks well placed by the Waller team. Broadside (7) ran third to My Giuliano last start after leading all the way. They probably will quinella the race. Lindwall (12) is lightly weighted and may improve this week for your exotics.

Race 6

Handfast (6) for the Godolphin team should win this. Religify (4) and God’s In Him (5) are first up here and have been trialling well recently. Falkenberg (9) resumes after a great third in the Queensland Oaks – probably may need the run – but watch out for it coming down the outside late.

Race 7 – Spring Champion Stakes

Yankee Rose (11) needs to win this to show she is up for a Melbourne campaign. Swear (3) gives me the impression that the 2000m will be right up his alley this week – he steadily made ground in the Gloaming Stakes last start. Prized Icon (1) was unlucky in the same race and if he can settle better this week is sure to be somewhere in the finish.

Race 8 – Angst Stakes

An open field here I will stay with the Brisbane Winter Carnival form – with Lady Le Fay (4) running well in the Doomben Cup and she is second up this week. She does look hard to beat here from barrier 2. Extensible (8) should be right there stepping up in distance – and has a great record with four wins and five placings from nine starts. The rest of them are pretty even and anything could fill the remaining placings.

Race 9

Suspense (3) is a nice four year old gelding – I see that Josh Parr has taken the ride here for the Snowden team – let’s hope he can get it home! Rock Forthe Ladies (2) won a recent trial and the inform Brenton Avdulla gets on board the Bjorn Baker trained gelding. Dixie Chick (10) was sent out favourite last start and was drawn wide in barrier 15 – despite this she finished the race off to be narrowly beaten by just 0.5 lengths. I think this is a nice trifecta to end the day at Randwick.
