WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, NOVEMBER 5
By Darren Winningham | Friday, November 4, 2016
Well 2016 Melbourne Cup is done and dusted for another year. A great win to Almandin from the Lloyd Williams camp. wonderfully ridden by Kerrin McEvoy. I did have it in my top three selections!
This week we return to Doomben. I hope the power stays on! The track should be rated as Good and the rail is out 1.5 metres for the entire course.
Thursday 3rd November marked the passing of Tim Bell. He was wonderful young man and talented jockey who was taken from us in such tragic circumstances. I am sure that all of us within the racing industry remember him with fondness and I know we all send our love to his family. I certainly do miss his banter at the race track and his solidarity around State of Origin time - we are devout NSW supporters!
NB *As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day
Race 1
This is an even bunch of stayers to start the program off this week. The interesting runner is the Tony Gollan trained Amexed (1) coming back to Brisbane after an unsuccessful campaign in Sydney in some higher class races. Emerald City (3) continues to go from strength to strength and is shooting for a hat trick of wins this week – despite coming back in distance it does look well placed with the claim for apprentice John Oliver.
La Spiaggia (4) has a great record at the track and over the distance with two wins from two starts. The gelding goes down in weight with the rise in class here and this could prove the factor that sees this horse go on his winning way at Doomben. My Diamantine (7) has been racing consistently in similar class races and could fill a place. Kaiser Franz (8) from the Heathcote yards his fourth up from a spell and has been racing consistently – he too has a good record at Doomben and over the 2000m and should be ready to show his best this weekend.
Selections: 3-4-8-7

Race 2
This is a large field of 2 year olds. As usual the best guide may be the late moves in the betting to find the winner here. Champ Elect (6) from the Chris Munce stables has been well backed in pre post markets and has the services of Damian Browne. I liked the win of the Gillian Heinrich & Ben Rodgers trained Cool Mover (7) in a recent trial at the Gold Coast and the filly has drawn handy here. Eminent (3) has trialled well and has to be respected as it is trained by David Vandyke – his stable has been in great form of late. He could win the first two races on the program if this colt gets any luck from barrier 15. She’s Spicy (11) is from the Birchley stables and Jeff Lloyd takes the ride here – these two are a lethal combination when they join forces. Silky Brown (12) is from Wylie Dalziel Syndications and is trained by Bryan and Daniel Guy on the Gold Coast and is drawn well – may be a smoky here.
Selections: 6-7-3-11 rough chances 1 and 12

Race 3
Tiyatrolani (3) resumes after some impressive wins last preparation – she is a speed machine and likes to bowl along in front. I thought she was unlucky in the Champagne Stakes over the Winter Carnival after being taken on in front. I think she is a class filly and will destroy this field – she does have barrier 11 to content with here this week. Downloading (5) is a brother to the recently retired Buffering and resumes from a spell here – he was super impressive winning his first race start here at Doomben over 1050m. Darlene Duryea has two in this race Ice Frost (7) and Thunder Raider (1). Both have been in recent winning form. Ice Frost (7) seems a nice filly and should be ridden on the speed – she has been very impressive at Ipswich in both her recent wins. Savanna Amour (8) ran a tremendous race over the Carnival and is first up here this week. She does look a progressive type that could fill a place at some nice odds. Starcourt (12) is a nicely bred gelding that won a barrier trial at the Gold Coast a few weeks ago – he has been transferred from Gary Moore in Sydney to the Bryan and Daniel Guy stables on the Coast.
Selections: 3-5-7-8 rough chance 12

Race 4
Kim Noir (11) was remarkable last start leading all the way at the same course and distance – she goes down in weight here and gets some weight off for Josh Oliver and could be hard to run down if she gets left alone in front. Khaleesi (9) has been racing very reliably over recent weeks without winning – the mare should fill a place here. Bidii Babe (2) won extremely well last start at Eagle Farm – is back to Doomben but has drawn awkwardly in barrier 14 and goes up in weight after performing so consistently after resuming from a spell. I declared her last start but not so confident with the factors I have spoken about against her this week – but she is a nice type! Mamselle Corday (5) comes to town with solid form around the Rockhampton and Mackay area. She could be a blow out chance at some nice odds in this race.
Selections: 11-2-9-5

Race 5
Better Land (1) won well last start for Toby Edmonds after suffering a betting drift in the ring – he was impressive at Eagle Farm and has his chance to win two in a row here. Stella Ombra (11) just can’t seem to draw a barrier this preparation but has been racing dependably without much luck – he could be the one to test the top weight here. Brotherly Secret (2) is one from the Robert Heathcote stable. I think you should forget his last run at Eagle Farm. I just do not think the gelding likes the track. I think back to Doomben this week he could be some nice value to test these favoured runners at nice odds at $10. Palace Tycoon (15) has been transferred from the Ellerton & Zahra stables in Melbourne to the Tony Sears yards in Toowoomba. Granted the horse looks like it races better over longer distances, however in the past it has performed well fresh. It could be a nice one at big odds for your exotic bets in an open field here.
Selections: 1-11-2-15

Race 6
This is the most open race of the day. There are a couple resuming here who may hold the key to the race. These are Magic Diamond (15) who has been transferred from the Peter and Paul Snowden stables to the Matthew Dunn stables – the mare has won a recent barrier trial but has drawn terribly in barrier 16. My Girl Hayley (16) raced well last preparation. The mare is trained by Tony Gollan and is to be ridden by the comeback kid – Lani Fancourt. She could snag her first winner since coming back from injury. Fiery Heights (5) is another resuming and has been trialling well at the Gold Coast and is trained by Toby Edmonds. The gelding is another one that has fared woefully at the barrier draw drawing barrier 17.
Drumbeat’s Choice (4) resumed at the Sunshine Coast recently with a nice win and has a good second up record – it is good value at around $20 in early markets. Gracida (6) was good first up behind Powerful Saga (8) here at Doomben last start and they meet again here. Powerful Saga (8) has the services of Damian Browne again this run and will be hard to beat again here for Helen Page. Look it is a tough race and some of the chances are drawn wide here – it may just come down to who gets in from out wide and can get some luck in the straight.
Selections: 4-8-6-15 rough chance 5 and 16

Race 7
Another sprint race over 1110m here – looks like it is a day of around sixty second races where you can lose your money very quickly. Prompt Return (6) has been racing well and is drawn okay here – Edmonds/Lloyd joins forces again to try and win a race on Saturday. Hard Stride (2) is another that has been very consistent after resuming with a win at Doomben – this is his fourth run now and back to Doomben where he races well he may test these. I would have tipped Another Whiskey (14) on top here, however, he has drawn wide again here, second up in barrier 15, and Glen Colless will need some luck to get in from out there.
The interesting runner here is Lady Jetsetter (15). She does have an impressive record here at Doomben – at $25 and Jimmy Orman on top the mare could just dominate in front or just sit off the speed that may be set by Rocky King and Rocket to Glory and blow them all away. One to watch is the Desleigh Forster trained Too Good To Refuse (13) resuming here after a solid Brisbane Winter Carnival – if there is some solid speed on in front, which I expect there will be, watch out for this stallion coming wide and down the outside at them late.
Selections: 6-14-2-15 rough chances 7 and 13

Race 8
Beckoning Light (14) won well last start after being ridden patiently off a wide barrier draw by Jimmy Orman – this week the mare has drawn nice in barrier 3 and I think she may just be ridden a little closer to the speed this week. She is down in weight and up in class but she does give the impression that the 1600m is more her go. The stable mate Privlaka (13) also trained by Robert Heathcote is a nice type as well and was desperately unlucky last start at Eagle Farm – he may just atone for that defeat last start and win easily here. He deserves to be the favourite. Dream Finish (10) seems to race better on the Doomben surface rather than the Eagle Farm track – back to where she likes it this week watch out for an improved effort. Lord Coconuts (6) ran true to form last start winning at Eagle Farm after putting in a solid effort behind Brazen Moss the start before – he may test these again this week. Tony Gollan has Extrasay (15) engaged here as well – this could be another one to throw in to your trifectas and first four at good odds. The mare has been in solid form and does like the 1600m at Doomben.
Selections: 14-13-10-6 rough chance 15

Jockey Challenge
This week it looks like it is an open field .. I have Damian Browne winning from Jeff Lloyd and Josh Oliver. That is a big ask with Brownie only having a handful of rides.
