WINNO'S WINNERS, DOOMBEN NOVEMBER 12

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, November 10, 2016

WINNO'S SELECTIONS FOR DOOMBEN, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12

Doomben this week – a good track – a HOT day and some great racing!

Last weekend the cheeky Lani Fancourt made a successful comeback riding with an all the way dominant win on My Girl Hayley trained by her boss Tony Gollan. It was so good to see her back in the winners stall and with that wonderful beaming smile ….. And of course that tongue out!

Then it was all going to plan – the first leg, the second leg, the third leg … Damian Browne riding two winners and being in front in the Jockey’s Challenge and along comes Jeff Lloyd and Emphasis in the last and destroyed everything that I had tipped and planned on Thursday. Oh well that is racing!

The Robert Heathcote stables landed a massive betting plunge with Brotherly Secret being backed from $12 in the early markets into $3.80 on track to win the fifth race on the program.

I did note the Chris Munce stable apprentice – young Michael Murphy rode his first city winner for his boss on Wednesday at Eagle Farm – with Shapin Lady winning at $13. Congratulations to Michael on this win – I am sure there are many more to come!

So, in summary, last week was a pretty good effort with a few winners and some nice exotics tipped by Winno. Let’s hope we can get amongst them this week.

NB *As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day

Race 1

We are back to two year olds kicking off the program again this week. Not much form here and not much seen on the track either – we must probably follow the betting moves in this race! I am just tipping the Liam Birchley trained She’s Spicy (9) as Jeff Lloyd has been engaged to ride. Triple Arrow (5) has had a run at Eagle Farm where it ran poorly. Since that run he has had a barrier trial which he won, and he comes to the races this week with the addition of a tongue tie as well – watch for a big improvement!

Selections: 9-5-7-8

Race 2

Another Whiskey (2) has a tremendous second up winning record and has drawn nicely here. I gave Lady Jetsetter (5) a big push last week and I was not disappointed with her run in the Class 6 race. This week she is back in grade and has a nice weight relief with the claim for apprentice Tiffani Brooker. Whilst she has drawn a little wide I just wonder whether we will see a change in riding tactics this week ... taking her to the lead and setting the pace in front from the wide barrier. This could prove to be winning tactics! Frequendly (6) has been racing very consistently at Eagle Farm and gets in well here. Alpen Rose (11) I think goes well at Doomben – watch for an improved effort this week.

Selections: 2-5-6-11

Race 3

This race has three Tony Gollan runners engaged. They all look to be promising. I think Lipstick Lover (9) is the most promising of them all and has the in-form Robbie Fradd on board. Ruler’s Pride (2) from the Michael Nolan yards in Toowoomba has been nicely working through the grades and steps up here this weekend to city Saturday grade and is looking for a hat trick of wins. No Annamossity (4) looks a promising gelding, trained by Rob Heathcote. It was flying home late last start at Eagle Farm over 1200m and this week steps up in distance to 1350m. Larry Cassidy takes over this weekend and at $6 I am having something each way on him – this could be my best for the day!

Selections: 4-9-2-6 rough chance 1

Race 4

Here we go … another one of these Benchmark 75 distance races this weekend. Whose turn is it this week to win? Flitero (4) from the Matthew Dunn stables makes a return to Doomben after a great win at Rosehill. The stallion may just get caught out here at Doomben as it does need some time to get going and runs home late – but, having said that, on exposed form looks the one to beat. Tralee Chorus (8) and Just Keep Giving (10) both ran great races at Eagle Farm two weeks ago when beaten by Mr One Eleven. I think these two are the dangers. Mandryka (6) is getting back up into the staying distances where he performed well last preparation . He may race on the speed and may well be hard to run down.

Selections: 4-8-10-6

Race 5

L’Entrecote (1) is the favourite and on its last few runs deserves the $3.80 price. Has drawn nicely here in barrier 1 and Damian Browne is a big bonus. I mentioned last week Extrasay (9) was engaged in the last race – however, it ended up being scratched from a wide barrier. I am prepared to take the $12 here each way to beat the favourite and think the mare will fare nicely in this race. My second selection is $21 in early markets and again I think the horse is better suited at Doomben. That horse is Speed Gonzales (10). Paul Hammersley takes the ride this weekend for trainer Brian Smith – they have a pretty good strike rate when they team up. Dream Finish (3) ran a solid race last weekend when narrowly beaten by Emphasis in the last race – she is certain to be there about as well. I have gone for some value in the first leg of the Quaddie this week – let’s hope we get off to a good start!

Selections: 9-10-1-3

Race 6

Class 3 race again this week over 1350 metres – I am keeping my money in my pocket! In His Stride (3) is coming back in grade here and has performed well. Apprentice Rebecca Williams retains the ride this week for trainer Rex Lipp. Shotacross the Bow (7) raced well over the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and resumes here this week. The gelding has a nice first up record with two wins from four starts and whilst he has a poor record at Doomben, I think he will be in the finish somewhere with any luck. Game Pie (10) is a NSW raider from the Kris Lees stables at Newcastle. He seems to race over longer distances. However, when Lees brings them to Brisbane his horses normally race well. The horse that has me intrigued is the David Vandyke trained Renesmee (14) at around the $7 mark. The six year old mare has been only lightly raced with six starts for two wins and three seconds – not a bad effort! She did win well last start at Doomben and I think that the step up in distance to the 1350m here will suit her. Vandyke has been in good form in recent weeks and his luck may just continue here this weekend!

Selections: 3-14-7-10

Race 7

Hold the press …. I am tipping Jopa (4) the first time ever! There are so many nice horses resuming here from a spell, any or all of them could win the race, but I have stayed with the old war horse that has the form on the board and has been racing very consistently. The rest of them are resuming and all have reasonable form first up from a spell. These runners are Harada Bay (9) from the John and Chris Meagher team fresh off a midweek win at Eagle Farm – Jimmy Orman and the Meagher stable seem to be forming a formidable team to be reckoned with. Ruling Force (12) always seems to run well fresh as does Lordag (11). The Helen Page trained Rudy (1) resumes here as well – it spells CLASS .. with a capital “C” - he has had a recent hit out on the Gold Coast in a barrier trial where he ran a nice second. I am not sure what plans Helen has for the gelding this time in but he is sure to be flashing late here.

Selections: 4-9-12-11 rough chance 1

Race 8

Well let’s see who can knock me out of my Quaddie this week in the last race! The jockeys challenge may come down to this race as well with the two South African jockeys I have dominating the program – Robbie Fradd and Jeff Lloyd. Perfect Dare (7) and Matthew Dunn and Jeff Lloyd are the early favourites for the race at $4.80. The run of the gelding first up at Rosehill was full of merit and he had some amazing form over the Winter Carnival. There are lots of reasons to put him on top here. I am going to gamble with Sheiswhatsheis (12) with Lani Fancourt jumping from barrier 7 and leading and proving too tough to run down. I know, a big call – but it is an open field here. Zaha’s Ace (5) resumed out bush last start carrying the grandstand in the bush with apprentice Nick Keal aboard. The run I am told was a nice effort. The mare has a wonderful second up record and always thrives at the Doomben track – should be some nice odds here as well ($14 in early markets). Themis (16) has had a recent stable change from the Waterhouse team in Sydney to the Tony Gollan yards. The mare is lightly raced. No official barrier trials but I am sure that Gollan will have her ready to fire. She does look a nice type and one to follow in coming weeks after this run.

Selections: 12-7-5-16 rough chance 6

Early Quaddie (Races 1 to 4 NSW TAB only 5,9 / 2,5,6 / 4,9 / 4,8,10 - cost is $36 for $1

Quadrella (races 5 to 8) 1,9,10 / 3,7,14 / 4,9,12 /5,7,12,16 - cost is $108 to $1

Mad Quaddie (races 5 to 8) 9,10 / 3,14 / 4,9 / 5,7,12 - cost is $24 to $1

Treble (races 6 to 8) 3,7,14 / 4,9,12 / 5,7,12,16 - cost is $36 to $1

Jockey Challenge

This week it looks like an even contest. In the blue corner we have Jeff Lloyd and in the red corner we have Robbie Fradd – let’s keep it clean lads and keep your hits to the horse within the rules else you will be fined! At this stage I have Jeff Lloyd getting home in the last race by a narrow margin – but it could end up a draw as well! Bet on one and save on the other is my tip!
