WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, DECEMBER 10
By Darren Winningham | Friday, December 9, 2016
This week we are back at Eagle Farm – the track should be rated as “Soft” by the time the meeting starts – but just in case check on the morning with all these morning and afternoon storms that have been pounding the metropolitan area. The rail is out 7.5m from the 1000m to the 400m and then 5m for the rest of the course . Last week Winno’s winners were in great form – tipping four winners and a first four that paid $1200. Then he backed up at Kilcoy tipping at least three winners on that program as well.
This week marks the commencement of the 2016/17 UBET Origin Jockey Series – marking more interest in the Summer series with jockeys representing Queensland, NSW, South Australia, Western Australia, South Australia and last year’s winners – New Zealand. I note that Luke Rolls did not get a call up to assist in New Zealand defending their title this year – “stiff” I say Sausage!
Well his absence really does not matter as we all know that the NSW team will reign supreme this year with the wonderful team of – Michael Rodd, Tim Clark, Tye Angland, Josh Parr and Tegan Harrison.
So bring on the Series!
Lastly, one of the better racing meetings held anywhere in the world takes place in Hong Kong on Sunday – with the Longines International Race Day. Winno will attempt to get the up to date information from his contacts in Hong Kong and provide a preview over the weekend. Hugh Bowman won the Longines International Jockey Championship on Wednesday night at the picturesque Happy Valley course – hopefully some more Australian representation may win over the weekend in Hong Kong.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1
Shanakee (8) trained by Bjorn Baker I think gets the chance to turn the tables on Rock On Ivy (3) who defeated him last start here over a similar distance. With Jeff Lloyd on the mare she looks the one to beat in the first race. I like the run of Charlie Royale (6) last start at Newcastle – sometimes with these stayers once they win a race they can sometimes string a couple together. However, it is one of those races where it seems each one of a bad lot seem to take their turn in winning. In the early market action Charlie Royale has been smashed from $26 to $14 and Sahara Siren (7) has been well supported from $13 to $8.
Selections: 8-6-3-2

Race 2
Another open two year old race for the season – I have not been convinced yet with seeing a prospective QLD representative for the Magic Millions – I think we may see some two year olds step out next week that may answer some of the questions. For this week here we go! I have no confidence here – will tip the John Zielke trained Bold Kingston (1) – I think he deserves a change of luck in town – and the gelding did run a great race over this course and distance last start.
The danger and maybe the one that will be most improved is the Steve O’Dea trained Colosimo (5) who was dynamic winning at the Gold Coast over 900m at her first ever race start – the key engagement of Kerrin McEvoy should not be under rated – he has great skills when riding two year olds.
Selections: 1-5-2-8

Race 3
I tipped Volpino (3) last start and he ran a slashing second to the impressive Billy The Kid. One could not miss the awesome performance of Benfica Princess (4) last start with her wonderful and powerful win here two weeks ago. I think this filly could be a genuine Oaks chance in the Winter Carnival next year – time will tell. No Annamossity (2) – was great last start as well – drawn wide – no luck and rattled home. Then there are a number of rough chances all that will enjoy the 1600metres – they are the Bevan Laming trained Smart Devil (9), the Brian Smith trained Order Again (6) and the Robert Heathcote trained Storm Girl (10). This is an open race with $5 the field
Selections: 4-3-2-9 rough chances 6 & 10

Race 4
Really a One Metro Win race – do they want the punters to go broke! Better Land (3) was a super run last start being beaten narrowly by Big Decision (4). I am sure Trent Edmonds who is in Hong Kong for the races will find time to tune in and watch the race – whilst his dad is working hard at Eagle Farm this weekend. Beckoning Light (7) was super last weekend over 1500m here – will the drop in distance cause any problems? I hope not – I think the drop back in grade should help the Heathcote trained mare – I see the Jimmy Orman retains the ride again this week.
Glendara (1) ran well last start at the Sunshine Coast – I do remember last year Tye Angland riding the Barry Baldwin trained gelding with a well rated ride in front at Doomben – will he be able to perform a similar performance here at Eagle Farm? Forgotten Years (5) ran soundly run behind Perfect Dare here the other week – it was a run that got my attention on that day – he will probably be improved for that performance.
Selections: 3-7-5-1 rough chance 11

Race 5
Heat One of the State of Origin Series – here we go! I notice that San Telmo (5) is nominated also for a race at Doomben on Friday – I wonder what race he will run in. He did win a recent trial at Deagon in nice style – looks wound up and ready for a first up win – he has drawn wide in barrier 17 and his chances will be enhanced even further with any more rain on the track. Tambo’s Heart (6) and Madame de Ban (12) both ran nice races behind Benefica Princess (engaged in Race 3) last start – keep your eye on her performance as it good prove to be solid form for this race and the chances of these two runners.
Arki (1) is a lightly raced six year old trained by Kelly Doughty on the Gold Coast – looks well placed here as well with the race conditions and comes off a solid win first up at the Gold Coast last start.
Selections: 6-12-1-5 rough chance 15 & 21

Race 6
Heat Two of the Jockey Origin Series. Two last start winners meet here this week – they are Stella Ombra (9) and Denarius (10) – both wins were full of merit – but I really think that Stella Ombra may be better suited here this week stepping up to a more suitable 1200metres, however, he does get back and does not always get all the favours in the running. Fiery Heights (11) comes off a solid win here three weeks ago and has drawn nicely and should be ridden close to the speed – plus a NSW lad rides the Toby Edmonds trained gelding in Tim Clark!
Bidii Babe (15) drops in weight and has not drawn well again this week in barrier 15 – you know what they say horse 15 – barrier 15 (just for the superstitious punters out there) – and with the flamboyant Chris Symons on board could be some nice odds here. In His Stride (17) drops dramatically back in class after running in the Tatts Recognition last start – the gelding will be given every chance by Michael Rodd (representing NSW). Well hopefully after these two heats it will be NSW plenty .. and QLD ... 0!
Now do not get abusive over the coming weeks – it is all good banter – if you want to support your State get along to the track in your State colours come to the fence and yell out .. I will come take your photo! There is the challenge issued – get out to the track and support your State!
Selections: 11-15-17-9 rough chances 10 & 13

Race 7
This is the race washed out last weekend at Eagle Farm when the super storm struck Brisbane late in the afternoon – meanwhile, whilst the power went out and the rain smashed down – I was at Kilcoy in 40 degrees wondering why we could not see any races from Eagle Farm. So I have cut and pasted my comments from last week – I don’t think much would have changed in a week.
Tiyatrolani (6) was impressive last start with the alteration in riding tactics from the Gollan team and ridden by Jim Byrne. Savanna Amour (10) has had a month between runs but did have a solid barrier trial at Deagon last week on Tuesday and won it quite well – with Jimmy Orman on board but has drawn a terrible gate this week. Candika (1) is the class runner here with solid performances over the recent Winter Carnival – she is first up here and does race well fresh.
Suspenders (7) is a Sydney visitor from the Gerald Ryan stables who ran a nice third in a barrier trial behind Winning Rupert (who came out last week and destroyed that field) while the Snowden trained Gibralter Girl has two wins and a second from three starts this time in and must be respected. I have altered the selections slightly with the changes in the barriers. I think the Chris Munce trained Nicconi Leggera (3) comes into the race now as well drawing the rails in barrier 1.
Selections: 7-9-6-3 rough chances 1,2 & 10

Race 8
The Chris Anderson trained Elegant Composure (1) was dominant two weeks ago – the mare has an exciting turn of foot and has an impressive record with seven wins from only nine starts. I suppose it is fraught with danger tipping against her here but I like the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Ravi (3) this week – Kerrin McEvoy on board – the race will be a battle of tactics.
The John and Chris Meagher trained Cruising Speed (5) is better placed here this week with the race conditions as well and I am sure we will see an improved performance over the 1300 metres of this race. Beatniks (2) was grand first up from a spell as well – it is interesting that Jeff Lloyd has been booked this week to ride the mare who has been placed second up a couple of times. Madotti (8) is coming off a nice win in Sydney and Tye Angland retains the ride here this weekend – she is not a big fan of shifting or wet ground – so we may not see the best of her this weekend if the track is rain affected.
Selections: 3-1-5-2 rough chances 8
********************************************************************************************************
Race 9
My Epic (6) could end a nice day at the Farm for the Edmonds team – I think I have highlighted previously how his horses seem to love the Eagle Farm track and this gelding is not an exception to the rule with three wins from four starts here. It has a nice second up record with two wins and a placing from four starts – looks well placed here! Harada Bay (4) was a great run first up at the Sunshine Coast and the form out of that race has stood up in recent weeks. The extra distance and the engagement of Luke Dittman to ride – Luke has a good strike rate on the seven year old gelding are all factors to say it will be hard to beat.
Rock Forthe Ladies (5) is trained by Bjorn Baker in Sydney and again when he brings his horses north they usually are very competitive. Tim Clark has a win on this gelding and has drawn well – he is another that will benefit with the sting out of the ground. Lordag (8) is always competitive every time he goes around – dropping back in grade here and does go well third up. L’Entrecote (10) last run was full of merit after being drawn off the track and having to be ridden for luck – again this week he has not fared that well drawing barrier 14 again – and is back in distance to 1500m.
Selections: 6-4-5-8 rough chances 10 and 14

Overall – I have Jeff Lloyd winning the first three races – he should be hard to run down if that occurs!
In the State of Origin series I have NSW winning clearly this weekend – not even biased as well! UBET let me and the NSW punters on for a good price please!
Good luck and good punting!
