RAND SEPT 05 - RANGIRANGDOO OUTSPRINTS RIVALS

By HRO | Tuesday, September 8, 2009

Randwick, September 5, 2009.
Tramway Handicap (Group 3) - 1400m.
Track - Good. Time: 1-21.93.
1 Rangirangdoo; 2 Strat’s Flyer; 3 Murray’s Sun.

In what turned out to be a sit and sprint affair, the Chris Waller trained Rangirangdoo showed he had too much dash for his rivals and in the process staked his claim for the Epsom Handicap.

Given a perfect ride by Corey Brown just behind the leader, Rangirangdoo eased out on straightening and on topping the rise was given full bore to claim the tenacious Strat's Flyer, who never gave in after having a fairly soft lead.

These two cleared out from the rest with Murray's Sun running very well again for third. The rest had no real chance given the slow tempo of the race and some of the runs should be forgiven.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Chris Waller: “We've kept our options open. Obviously you always think Caulfield Cups and
Melbourne Cups, but he's shown enough turn of speed to come back the other way, which is
what we've done today and given him the extra week and target the Epsom.

“I think the mile will be perfect for him in four weeks time. He's just a big kid, he's the stable pet really and racing wise he is still learning a lot as well. He just gets in a little bit over the concluding stages and all these things will straighten out over the next few runs. Next run will be in the Shannon Stakes and then onto the Epsom.”

Jockey Corey Brown: “He is an exciting horse! The first furlong they really charged along and then Hugh (Bowman, riding Strat’s Flyer) threw out the anchor and slowed up mid-race. I was a little bit concerned about it, so I got out around them and I actually hit the front too soon and he half had a bit of a look and pulled up underneath me ... but he's a lovely horse.

“With no weight and a lot of speed up front, he will be charging home well (in the Epsom).”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Road To Rock, which missed the start slightly, was then crowded for room shortly afterwards when Albert The Fat shifted in away from Bryannbo’s Gift. Albert The Fat got its head up and over-raced when being restrained off the heels of Bryannbo’s Gift passing the 1300m. App. D Ganderton, rider of Bryannbo’s Gift, was fined the sum of $250 for adding a girth cover after the weigh (AR118A). J Cassidy reported that Judged was reluctant to proceed to the 1400m start in the chute and cantered for some 200m along the back straight. Judged was examined by the Club Veterinary Officer and
passed fit to start. J Cassidy stated that Judged did not respond at any stage to his riding and was most disappointing. A post race veterinary examination of Judged did not reveal any abnormalities.

When questioned, J Ford stated that Mentality missed the start about half a length and was quickly crossed by runners to his outside. He stated Mentality then commenced to over-race badly and in the middle stages for some distance had to be severely checked off the heels of Teranaba. He added that, as a result, Mentality failed to finish the race off. When Mentality over-raced badly in the middle stages Albert The Fat in turn had to be restrained off the heels of that runner for some distance. A post race veterinary examination of Mentality did not reveal any abnormalities.

When questioned concerning the disappointing performance of Bryannbo’s Gift, trainer Ms A Ruttley stated that the horse races best when able to find cover and that she felt this was the principal reason for Bryannbo’s Gift’s failure to finish the race off.
