WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JANUARY 26
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, January 26, 2017
Well, welcome to Australia Day ... where we are all told to eat lamb, drink and have a bet. The track will be rated good and the weather – hot! Damn hot!
Straight into the form this meeting.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Race 1
Endless Don (1) trained by the father and son team of Peter and Will Hulbert looks the one to beat here. A pretty even bunch with all of them looking for their first race win – anything could win in these distance races! The danger looks like the Ben Hull trained Bronte Babe (5). As for the rest take your pick!
Selections: 1-5-2-4.

Race 2
Of the Day (9) looks well placed here by Tony Gollan and has been well backed in the early markets from $3.50 into $3.00. Last start it raced in the very strong Magic Millions Maiden race on Magic Millions day and was only beaten 1.6 lengths – a jockey change for this run with Jimmy Orman taking the mount. The danger is the David Van Dyke trained Mad Magic (3) who has won a recent barrier trial – in form jockey Jeff Lloyd hops aboard for this first up run. Matthew Dunn has Diamond On Command (7) engaged here and I see that the “Bobstar” – Bobby El-issa - who has been riding in great form has come up from down south to ride the mare first up. She has had some recent trials at Murwillumbah and is probably set to run a bold race.
Selections: 9-3-7-4.

Race 3
This is an even bunch here – so many that have been doing well but not winning. The Mick Lakey trained Final Zero (8) comes off a recent maiden class win – but can the three year old filly step up in grade here? There has been some early money since the markets opened to say she can – she has been backed from $4 to $3.20. Fleur D’Orage (3), trained by Barry Baldwin, has Jeff Lloyd aboard again this week. She does race off the speed and may have to make a run at them late in the straight but I think should be up for a win here. Lady Duporth (1) is trained by the Hulbert stables and I am sure they would be happy to get an early double on the board. Tegan Harrison is back aboard for this run and she does have a good record on the horse with two rides for a win and a second on it.
Selections: 3-1-8-2.
************************************************************************************************* Race 4
Lifesaver (4) is trained by Matthew Dunn and part owned by a mate of mine Damien Quinn. I did see the colt win his first race start at Murwillumbah and he did look like a nice type (plus I won a few $$ on it). He steps up in grade this week after winning a Class 1 race over 1200m here two weeks ago – Jim Byrne is staying on him. I think he is a great gamble and will give you a great sight. Red Scarlet (1) trained by Helen Page on the Gold Coast comes off an impressive run at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions day when beaten by 2.80 lengths by Irish Constabulary. Prior to that run he had strung a hat trick of wins together with Dan Griffin on him for the last two wins. Dan comes to town to ride the gelding. He knows him well so he looks the one to challenge my tip. We all know when Helen brings one to town they always are trained to the minute and are very competitive. Tony Gollan has Stylian (5) engaged here as well with Lani Fancourt riding. Last start he won at the Sunshine Coast first up from a spell. He steps up sharply in grade here but has had some serious backing in the early markets firming from $11 to $7.
Selections: 4-1-5-2/

Race 5
Tarzan resumes after being gelded and has been trialling well at home on the Sunshine Coast – Stuart Kendrick trains the gelding and Tiffani Brooker rides him after winning a trial on the horse on 17.1.17. He raced well last preparation and looks well in here. The danger I think is the Mick Lakey trained Earnhart (3) who was a touch unlucky first up at the Sunshine Coast when he struck a heavy track and Irish Constabulary in the race. We all know that Irish Constabulary has won since – I think that on the firm track here on Australia Day he will be the one to test the favourite (Tarzan) if he is not ready. Michael Nolan trains French Concession (8) who is resuming after a spell. My spies in Toowoomba tell me that the mare has been working well and is forward enough here to be competitive against this lot – this is probably supported with some early money for her seeing her backed from $6 into $4.60.
Selections: 7-3-8-13.

Race 6
Time to Torque (1) won well first up at Eagle Farm two weeks ago. Whilst it was unwanted in the betting, being sent out at $21, it won impressively and did run some nice races around the winter time in 2016. Luke Milligean will probably turn up and strap the gelding – so that may improve his chances as well! The danger is the Bryan and Daniel Guy trained Slydini (4) who comes back in grade in this race and probably deserves a change in luck. Beat Street (7) was a beaten favourite last start here at Doomben. After reviewing his run he gives me the impression that he may be looking for the 1350m of this race.
Selections: 1-4-7-10.
*************************************************************************************************
Race 7
The 2017 Magic Millions To Year Old Classic winning team of Toby Edmonds and Jeff Lloyd team up again here with Ra Ra Epic (11). The mare has had a month since her last run and to be fair hasn’t shown all that much in four starts since resuming. I just wonder whether the freshen up and going down in weight will assist her here. Real Ego (9) was sent out as favourite last start and I think just didn’t cope with the Eagle Farm track. Rebecca Williams retains the ride and her three kilogram claim and, third up from a spell, I think the four year old gelding may be ready to shine here. Sunny Fame (6) resumes here – watch for any late market moves for him as he does have some impressive form over longer distances.
Selections: 9-11-7-6.

Race 8
The last race of the day – ‘Stralia Day – I am sure there may be a few patrons not in any condition to remember the day by this stage!
I am tipping one here at some odds, currently around $8 looking to win three in a row since resuming from a spell. The gelding is trained by Paul Duncan and to be ridden by the in-form Brad Pengelly. It is The Perpetrator (4). Le Dude (1) has had around four weeks between runs but has been kept ticking over with a barrier trial last week at the Gold Coast where the run was good. Expat Envy (2) rounds out my selections with Jimmy Orman looking for another win on the program. Dumfries (7), trained in Toowoomba by Rex Lipp and to be ridden by Tiffani Brooker, is looking for another win after winning at Doomben two weeks ago when he broke through for his maiden win.
Selections: 4-1-2-7.
