WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, FEBRUARY 11
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, February 9, 2017
DOOMBEN SATURDAY 11 FEBRUARY 2017
Doomben this weekend. They reckon the weather will be around 37 degrees, I assume will be running on a good to fast track. The rail will be out 5m the entire course – this usually means that horses that lead or race handy may have an advantage.
This week Winno had a birthday – a humble thanks to all those who took the time to send a special message. Those who sent extra special messages – your birthday will come soon!
I just would like to mention that wonderful series of photos that Graham Potter, editor of www. horseracingonly.com.au, took last weekend when Oink won the last race at Eagle Farm. It was such a special set of photos! If you have not seen the jump onto the web page and take a look in the photo gallery!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Race 1
South of France (3) - debut run at Eagle Farm was full of merit. Looks well placed here. The Desleigh Forster trained Lady Lark (4) won first up and has been placed since – the filly looks well in here. John Zielke has enlisted Luke Dittman to ride his first starter Ruby Red Heart (10). The filly has been trialling well in Toowoomba and whilst the Zielke stable has been quiet this two year old season they deserve a change of luck. Felino Bel (6) was impressive at Grafton in her first career start. Trained by the Gold Coast based Bryan and Daniel Guy team she could go on with it here this weekend. She has been well supported in the early markets firming from $8 to $5.50.
Selections: 3-4-10-6

Race 2
Arki (5) is in career best form, going from strength to strength answering the challenge of every run that trainer Kelly Doughty has set the gelding this preparation. He is looking for five wins in a row this weekend – let’s hope the great form continues! Blue Lion (4) drops in weight and does meet Arki better at the weights for a last start defeat at the Sunshine Coast. Look for a more competitive run here at Doomben. Shoreham (1) comes back slightly in distance from 2200m to the 2030m. The seven year old gelding does race on the speed and I notice that Damian Browne has been engaged here this weekend. I have been tipping Outraged (6) in the last few weeks. I am sure that back at Doomben he may show some improvement. Another thing in his favour is Ric McMahon gets back on this weekend – he has a great record on the five year old gelding with seven rides for three wins and a second. He is great value at around $20 presently.
Selections: 5-4-1-7 rough chance 6

Race 3
I did manage to tip Tarzan (4) last start and he got the job done. I am a little concerned with barrier 13 this weekend but jockey Tiffani Brooker has been in wonderful form of late! I am going for one at some value here – Just Orm (13) drawn in the middle of the field, trained by Tony Gollan and to be ridden by Jim Byrne. This looks like a winning team and at the juicy odds of $9 I think he is a good each way gamble here. Ashley Butler takes the ride on the Rockhampton trained Shigeru Mahogany (3). The gelding trained by Zoe Hohn has been racing in similar company around central Queensland and has been running some competitive races in good times. He is good value if you like a roughie here around $20 in the early markets. Bruce Hill has Hidden Light (11) nominated in this race. She comes off a solid win last start on the Gold Coast and has won here previously at the track.
Selections: 13-4-3-11

Race 4
Ahndras (4) was super impressive in her last two starts – one here at Doomben and in her last start at Sunshine Coast. She has been well backed in the early markets firming from $3 to $2.30. I think she is my best bet this weekend! Up The Tempo (6) is second up here and looks the hardest to beat. Ringo’s A Rockstar (1) was gallant in defeat last weekend in the race won by Oink – he motored home late and gave the impression that the 1630m this weekend may be of benefit. I am just worried with the rail out so far Brooke Ainsworth will have to get some luck in the straight to get him home here, but he will be flashing at them for sure. Don’t Doubt The Wife (8) comes off an impressive maiden race win here ten days ago when Jim Byrne dominated the race and won by 5.5 lengths. She looks like one with plenty of improvement!
Selections: 4-6-1-8
*************************************************************************************************** Race 5
A No Metro Win race – here we go! At least it is not the first leg of the quadrella! Havasay (3) has been scratched from races in recent weeks and the Liam Birchley trained gelding now looks well placed here in this grade. Again the issue may be getting back too far and making a run late. Damian Browne may have to ride him for luck here if leaders are winning the earlier races. Craiglea Deken (1) has been racing consistently in the north. He has raced in town previously and has performed well. Motion Granted (4) will race handy and Cassandra Schmidt rides the Barry Baldwin trained gelding again this weekend. Last start he did perform well when beaten by Our Story. Then there is the Troy Pascoe trained I’m Alone (12). I thought last start he raced in the worst part of the track at Eagle Farm and despite that still finished the race off strongly. I did put the call out for part owner Kurt Croft to shout a Chinese feed for Winno if he won – but at $40 and $33 and despite running second there was no free feed! So this weekend I expect a feed if the gelding gets up Mr Croft.
Selections: 3-1-4-12 rough chance 10

Race 6
Here we go – the first leg of the Quaddie for the program (as it is a 9 race program). Guess what?? It is another No Metro Win race, this time for fillies and mares! I am gambling on Queen Tara (2) here. I think you should forget her last run in the Magic Millions Country Cup – she had no peace in front and weakened badly. The one at some nice odds, around $20 at the moment, is Peking Road (14) trained by Stuart Kendrick and to be ridden by Ryan Wiggins. I thought the run last start in a higher grade at Eagle Farm when beaten by Rich Affair by 1.3 lengths was a good sight for this assignment. I think with the firm track this week and the opportunity to be ridden handy by Wiggo she could be a nice each way chance to knock out the favourite. Passionflower (4) ran well last start behind Mystic Opal – the six year old mare is well in here this week!
Selections: 2-14-4-1

Race 7
Helarocity (9) ran them into the ground last start at Toowoomba. He is only a lightly raced five year old out of the Lindsay Hatch stable but has an impressive record of seven starts for 4 wins and 2 placings. There is one here that you should not let get under your guard – Poncherello (12) who is now trained by Les Kelly. He ran an honest race on Magic Millions Day and then came out last start on the Gold Coast and franked that run with an impressive win. He led on that occasion and may be tough to beat here this week if horses on the speed dominate the program. Luke Tarrant takes the ride this weekend and at around the $10 mark represents good value. Voltaire Lumiere (5) trained at Ballina by Stephen Lee is looking for a hat trick of wins here – although he has never won or placed at Doomben his recent forms suggests he may fill a place. Marksfield (6) I think may appreciate getting back to Doomben this weekend. He drops sharply back in grade here and gets in well with the claim for apprentice Adam Sewell with three kilograms off.
Selections: 9-12-6-5
************************************************************************************************** Race 8
This looks a good race on paper. Siegfried (10) comes off a nice run on Magic Millions day and looks hard to beat here with the lethal combination of Toby Edmonds/Jeff Lloyd is on show. The gelding did win first up at Doomben as I am sure it will give you a sight for your money here this weekend. The Kelly Doughty trained Flamboyer (2) performed amazingly in the Sunshine Coast Cup two weeks ago when beaten by Sir Moments. He does love to bowl along in front and I notice that Lani Fancourt has been engaged this weekend – she certainly knows how to rate them in front. Interestingly, after reviewing the form, she has ridden the gelding on three occasions for two wins! Murt the Flirt (5) has stayed in Queensland after his run on Magic Millions day. I think down in the weights this week and a longer distance we may see a sharp improvement as well. I think Doomben may suit himl. Glen Colless, who takes the ride, should take up a forward position this week and I think he will be in the finish. Banda Spice (8) was caught wide last start at the Sunshine Coast after an impressive win at Eagle Farm. If jockey Jimmy Orman can get him in and get him settled this week there could be a big improvement.
Selections: 10-2-5-8

Race 9
Robert Heathcote and Larry Cassidy team up again here with Oberland (3) who has been racing consistently - he is looking for a hat trick of wins here on the weekend. Oberland does look well placed here by Rob and he does handle carrying weight – so I have some confidence in him. I note the Peter and Paul Snowden team have sent Suspense (1) to Brisbane this weekend. He does get in well here and on his recent Sydney runs looks like he will be competitive against this lot. Toby Edmonds finishes the program with Fiery Heights (8). He has a good record but sometimes just fails to finish off his races and nearly always runs a place. Personally, I think he is a better horse at Doomben than across the road at Eagle Farm – so my thoughts are he probably will be in this for a long way. As for the rest, Jim Byrne has taken the ride on Sheiswhatsheis (12) that comes off a six week break. She can race well fresh but from barrier 16 this weekend may need some luck. There have been a few early scratchings from this race so her task may be not as hard as it looked on paper with the full field.
