DOOM SEPT 09 - CORNWALL PARK STILL UNBEATEN
By Graham Potter | Thursday, September 10, 2009
The Alan Bailey trained Cornwall Park had little difficulty in maintaining his unbeaten record when he won by a clear-cut 2.80 length margin to make it three wins from three starts.
Jockey Glen Colless settled the lightly raced four-year-old in fourth then third placing as Falconten cut out a strong pace at the head of affairs. Colless then punched Cornwall Park passed Social Cat to move into second place in the sweep to the turn and, by the time the field straightened, he had Falconten well and truly in his sights.
Falconten fought on briefly, but Cornwall Park always had his measure and the latter asserted his authority inside the final 200m to come home with plenty in hand.
Doomben, September 9, 2009. Track - Dead 4. Rail - Out 9.5m. Class 3 Handicap (C,G &E) - 1350m. Time: 1-21.02. 1 Cornwall Park; 2 Social Cat; 3 Falconten.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Alan Bailey: “He could be a very good horse although he is still a bit of time away from that. He missed a fair bit with the EI. When he bought him in New Zealand he was locked up there for a while. Then we got him home and he got a little infection in his back joint. We had to put him out again for another three or four months.
“That’s only his third run. He’s learning all the time and a few more runs and he’ll know where he’s going. We’ll give him a little break again now.”
Jockey Glen Colless: “He’s only had the three starts ... three wins. He is still a bit immature yet, you know. He’s got a bit of a bad habit of wanting to find the fence, but he’s learning every time.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: On return to scale a protest was lodge by jockey S. Seamer, rider of the 3rd placegetter, Falconten, against Social Cat (M. Radecker), alleging interference near the 1100m. After considering the evidence and viewing the patrol footage, stewards were not satisfied that the interference suffered by Falconten had materially affected the result at the end of the race and the protest was subsequently dismissed.
Amaizemea (J. Wood) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with Werockit (M. Hellyer), which also jumped away awkwardly and missed the start. Dubai Oasis (J. Taylor) jumped away awkwardly and shortly after was hampered by Cornwall Park (G. Colless), which shifted in. Meld (L. Rolls) attempted to buck after the start and near the 1000m L. Rolls was dislodged. L. Rolls was subsequently attended to by the ambulance bearers and cleared of any apparent injury. Trainer M. Eggleston was advised that Meld must barrier trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.
Near the 150m, Falconten (S. Seamer) had to be checked when being tightened for room as a result of Cornwall Park (G. Colless) being inclined to lay in under pressure. Whilst it was conceded that Cornwall Park was inclined to lay in, G. Colless, rider of Cornwall Park was nevertheless advised that in future he must make greater efforts to keep his mounts straight. The club's veterinary surgeon reported that Amaizemea returned to the enclosure with a small amount of blood in its mouth.
