WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, FEBRUARY 25
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, February 23, 2017
We are back at Doomben this Saturday.
The track is good and the rail in it true position.
Looks like a great day of racing.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Race 1
We have a two year old race to start off the day. The John Zielke trained Ruby Red Heart (3) was very impressive first up – there was a fair bit of early market support for the filly and she duly saluted. This week she will be around the $1.90 mark and looks the winner here. In that run at Doomben she beat Lady Lark (1). They meet again this week and it looks like a good quinella. Pah Terie (5) from the Schweida stables ran well in her first ever race start. I think the extra distance here this week will assist her. Jeff Lloyd has been booked for the ride.
Selections: 3-1-5-4

Race 2
Quatronic (7) from the Matthew Dunn yards was super impressive first up at Eagle Farm. $2.10 looks a good price here and with Jeff Lloyd on board again he looks a stand out. Jeff has ridden the four year old gelding two times for two wins. I think that the Ron Heathcote trained Pinch River (3) just did not come up last start. He has had ten months off now and I am hoping he can run on strongly at the end. Lady Jetsetter (6) is a better horse here at Doomben in my opinion and from barrier 3 may just sit off the favourite and try and run him down in the final 100m. Straturbo (1) has returned from a Sydney mission. He is harshly treated at the weights here and will need some luck here. He does love this track and Anthony Allen will probably have him trailing the leaders and coming with his customarily late run near the winning post.
Selections: 7-3-6-1

Race 3
Yoho (3) looks well placed here. At $10 I think he is a great each way chance. Last start he ran over 2000 metres for the first time and finished a credible second to Arki. I think this is the form to follow in this race. Sentimental Prince (10) from the Gollan stables is the danger. Fourth run in this preparation, and stepping up to the longer distance ticks a few boxes. In addition he does love the Doomben track. Outraged (5) won last weekend at Eagle Farm – the quick back up this week may suit him here. Selections: 3-10-5-9

Race 4
I think the race is between Up The Tempo (6) and Don’t Doubt Da Wife (7). I think their form of recent has been solid. Up The Tempo (6) is third up this week and drawn nicely. I think this is the one to beat at the good odds of $7. Niccanova (5) thundered home last week in a shorter race. I am certain that the 1600m of this week’s race will suit the gelding. However, he has been placed as a $2.10 favourite this week. I think this is way under the odds when he is coming up against these more seasoned race horses.
Selections: 6-7-5-1

Race 5
Siegfried (6) has been racing consistently since resuming from a spell. It has two wins and a close up 4th on the board. Looks the one to beat here and at around the $4 mark looks exceptional value. Flamboyer (3) will probably lead again and is always difficult to run down. Jopa (2) the old war house loves this track and always runs well here at Doomben. Cylinder Beach (1) is resuming here this week – and certainly has a lot of class on this lot. He is set to head to Sydney for the Championships. I think he will need the run here this weekend but do not count him out.
Selections: 6-3-2-1

Race 6
Bold Adventure (5) had its first start for the Toby Edmonds stable at Ipswich two weeks ago and was impressive in winning. The gelding steps up in distance this week. It has been well supported in the early markets firming from $9 to $5. (Please note that Bold Adventure is also nominated for Race 8 as well). The other one that has been absolutely smashed in the betting is another John Zielke runner – Dreams Aplenty (15) – who has been belted from $7 to $2.60 and is now the early market favourite for the race. The three year old gelding is lightly raced and did race against some high class horses in stakes and Group races in his last preparation. There is some stable confidence in this one! I note the Bobby El-Issa has made the trip to Doomben to ride him this weekend as well. Just Orm (14), with all this support for the other two, has got out in the market to around $9. I think that he is a good chance here this weekend and Jim Byrne retains the ride on the gelding. He has a two ride for two wins record on him.
Selections: 5-14-15-6 rough chance 13
**************************************************************************************************** Race 7
These Quaddie legs get harder each week. Another No Metro Win race for the third leg. It is hard to line up the form for these races but I will do my best. Last week I wrote about Tyzone (15) that had been transferred from trainer Roy Chillemi at Atherton to Lawrie Mayfield-Smith in Brisbane. It was scratched and this week has drawn well and is down in weights. Seems well placed in this grade. I think at $7 it is a special – so load up! Rhyme Nor Rhythm (9) was impressive first up at Toowoomba and should benefit from that run. It has been well backed from $3.20 to $2.90 so the stable must be confident coming to town this weekend! The Lindsay Hatch stable has another one engaged here – Helarocity (22). It was drawn badly two weeks ago but still raced well. Although he is drawn poorly this week I give him a chance for the exotics. Jetsonic (17) from the Gollan yards raced well here a fortnight ago in a similar class of race where he finished the race off well over 1350m. I think 1200 metres is more his go, so watch out for an improved performance this weekend.
Selections: 15-9-17-22 rough chances 2 and 18

Race 8
We finish this week’s program with the “Blokes Day Out” race. This is another open field that has tested me this week. Time to Torque (6) and I Am The Sculptor (8) I think are real good chances at Doomben – they do love the track! I think you should overlook the run of Time to Torque at Eagle Farm last start and go on his win here a month ago. He looks a good each way chance at $8. I Am The Sculptor is at $7 and I think this represents good value as well. I am also attracted to the Tony Gollan representatives – Bentles (3) and Sheiswhatsheis (9). Bentles (3) normally like to lead or race handy in his races and he has a good first up record – do not let him get under you guard. Jim Byrne rides the stable mate Sheiswhatsheis (9) who ran a nice second to Fiery Heights last start here at Doomben. She has drawn a little wide here in barrier 11 and does go up in weight for her recent consistent performances. I think we can finish off the day with a nice result here – box the trifecta for a nice dividend!
Selections: 6-8-3-9 rough chance 1
