WINNO'S KILCOY KASH, KILCOY, APRIL 22
By Darren Winningham | Friday, April 21, 2017
Well I have packed my cameras and computer and I will be heading for Kilcoy Race Club tomorrow. This is their annual Anzac Day meeting – and it will be covered by the TAB – so there will be some value here! The track is rated GOOD, the rail in the normal position and the weather is forecast to be great! The pacing (trotting) on a turf track, such a spectacle, kicks off the program. These races commence at 11.30am with three races scheduled in total.
This is followed by a 7 race thoroughbred race meeting. In addition the kids and the mini trots will make an appearance between races 4 and 7, so there is a spectacle for everyone!
This is a wonderful program – I would suggest you get your children and make a family day of it.
For the punters load up those wallets and come send the bookmakers home broke! There is always a great ring of bookmakers attending this meeting betting on the local races and all other race meetings across Australia. By the way, my theory for this track is if they can lead or they have won here before then they usually do well! I will be on the lookout for some 60 seconds with Winno candidates – punters – trainers – and other jockeys – so if you are brave enough to go toe to toe come up and say hi – I dare you!
Come take on Winno toe to toe.
With State of Origin only weeks away if you are a Queenslander I would like to hear from you just so I can look into the eyes of a person who likes to back losers!
The challenge has been issued – over to you all now!
Form assessed for a good 4 track. NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
****************************************************************************************************** Race 1
Aztec Warrior (3) is trained by the strong David Vandyke stable at the Sunshine Coast. I think her last two starts on heavy and slow tracks should be overlooked and I think you will see a massive improvement this weekend on a dry track at Kilcoy.
Lady Marmalade (9) trained by Ben Robinson should race close on the speed and should be hard to run down if left alone in front. I think that Bravado Miss (4) will lead them, however it has drawn wide in barrier 12 and may have to be used up from out there. Chelsea Jokic was to ride the filly, however, she suffered a fall in a trial after the Mackay race meeting on Thursday – I have read she has a fractured skull but is in good spirits and should make a full recovery – best wishes Chelsea and get well soon!
Note the 8 is an early scratching – she would have been hard to beat here. Selections: 3-9-4-5
******************************************************************************************************* Race 2
This is a solid Class 2 race here. I see that the Kilcoy Chairman, Mr Con Searle, had Zouzoukakia (1) engaged here as well. Maybe I should offer him $5 on his horse and see what happens! I give him a write up and he scratches the horse – he must have not wanted my good odds I was prepared to offer him!
I see the doctor of race course fashion Mr Billy Healey has Written Honour (4) engaged in the race as well. It will be great to catch up with Billy as he and his father are a good training team. I reviewed the trial that the mare ran at Sunshine Coast two weeks ago and it looked a solid hit out and she should be competitive here. Amelia Denby takes the ride for the Healey team and she does ride this course well (remember Amelia first around the turn normally wins).
Ben Currie, whilst he has a large team heading to Doomben, has sent a few runners to Kilcoy as well – the first of them is here – Captain’s Luck (2). Again like the first race I think you should overlook the dismal performance last start on a heavy track and go on the start before at Ipswich where the gelding was competitive in a strong Class 2 race.
The other chance is the Michael Lakey trained Our Jamaica (3) who resumes here and is to be ridden by Beau Appo. Selections: 4-2-3-7
****************************************************************************************************** Race 3
I just love these 800 metre races at Kilcoy – they are a real spectacle – they get out and run and just don’t stop!
I see Beau Dene Appo has come to Kilcoy – a hard working jockey who has been in outstanding form lately riding winner after winner at Toowoomba in recent months. He is riding Clearwater (1) for his old boss Mick Lakey. The three year old gelding has drawn the rail and normally races in the lead. There is no official barrier trial form for this one that I could find but I think he will pretty forward for this first up assignment and Mick’s horses always seem to race well here.
Hidden Sequel (5) ran over 800 metres last start at Ipswich and looked good. This filly will race handy as well and may lead. Brooke Stower rides her for the first time. She should be in the placings for sure.
Scripts (9) has been racing well in probably a higher class at Toowoomba over recent weeks. Nozi Tomizawa rides here and I think he will settle off the speed and race home fast and late – could be hard to hold out if these leaders tire in the straight.
I note that Ben Hull has brought a debutant north here for a first up run – ironically the filly is called Flying Machine (4) and she will need to fly over this 800 metres here for her first start. I would have a strong watch on this one and if there are any market moves for her she may prove hard to toss! Selections: 1-5-9-4
****************************************************************************************************** Race 4
Another 800 metre race – just blink and you will miss it!
Whatever Miss (1) I think will prefer a wet track so I have gone away from her. Liverpool Jane (2) has been racing consistently over these short courses for her last few runs. I think with the small field here and barrier 5, jockey Gemma Steele should be able to get her across onto the paint and set up the race from there. She is first up this weekend and will probably race well fresh.
Jeptoo (4) won last start at Wandoan over 900 metres – she may just go on with that form here. Rock of Glory (3) usually races a little off the speed. She is first up as well and Stephanie Lacy takes the ride. Stephanie rides the Kilcoy circuit very well and this one should not be under rated. Selections: 2-4-3-1
******************************************************************************************************* Race 5 - Tattersall’s Racing Club Anzac Cup 2017 How good is it to see Tattersall’s supporting the Kilcoy Club and country racing!
Hooriya (3) trained by John Zielke looks well placed here. I think he will race on the speed from barrier 1. I see that apprentice Michael Schrapel has been entrusted to ride the mare for the Zielke team. He has had two previous rides on her for two second placings – maybe it is his chance to take out a Cup at Kilcoy!
The hardest to beat here looks like Tune Out (4) who has been racing consistently over distances of around 2000 metres in his last few starts – as an 8 year old gelding he just keeps putting in each start.
First Stimulus (1) trained at the Sunshine Coast by Kristie Clark-Peoples has got two previous wins over the distance. The five year old gelding has had a short let up and is second up here. He looks well placed in this grade and will be powering home late. Selections: 3-4-1-5
****************************************************************************************************** Race 6 – Butler McDermott Lawyers Kilcoy Diggers Cup 2017 Again I note the solid support from Butler McDermott Lawyers who support the Kilcoy Racing Club each year.
Produce Me Late (3) is another one trained by David Vandyke here this weekend. He is a four year old gelding maiden so probably should be racing in a lesser class race than this but I think his last two starts on wet tracks should be overlooked and I think on top of the ground he will be a different proposition here this week.
I think you can totally forget the run of Prospecting (4) last start at the Sunshine Coast on the Heavy 8 track – he just didn’t handle the bog track. Previous to that his form has been solid and does have a win here at Kilcoy on the board as well. I think at $12 each way he is a good gamble here.
Kakakenny (2) is now trained at Toowoomba by Phyllis Kalinowski and resumed for the new stable with a great win last start at Goondiwindi. He is only a lightly raced five year old who looks like will be competitive here.
Adjourned (9) was poor last start but I think the soft track was to blame so look for an better run here this week. Selections: 3-4-2-9 rough chance 7
****************************************************************************************************** Race 7
The lucky last – hopefully we have smashed the bookies by now!
I have gone for some value in the last race here as I am tipping Ralph the Dragon (4) around the $10 mark each way.
Michael Schrapel takes the ride here for Beaudesert trainer Greg Cornish. He won here at Kilcoy on the Australia Day meeting in January when I declared him! He has had a month off but I think he will race handy and with the claim for Michael should be hard to beat!
Burning Mountain (5) was first up from a spell last start and was a solid performance for his new stable – now trained by the Vandyke team at Sunshine Coast. Vandyke could have a big day here with any fortune going their way.
Expat Envy (6) is first up here and always races well fresh – with three first up runs for 2 wins. Michael Lakey trained as well so his stable could have a good day as well!
Marked Forever (7) won on a heavy track last start at the Sunshine Coast. The gelding is trained by Billy & Dale Healey and normally likes to bowl along in front. He may lead here and be hard to run down if left alone in front. It is a great program – so I am looking forward to attending and catching up with all the regulars and the Army officers who come along and support this meeting every year! Selections: 4-5-6-7
****************************************************************************************************** Best Bets
Race 3 – Clearwater (1) around $2.70 Best Roughies
Race 6 – Prospecting (4) around $12 Race 7 – Ralph the Dragon (4) around $10 Jockey Challenge
This is normally an open field at Kilcoy each meeting and this week is no exception.
I am going for a dead heat – apprentice Michael Schrapel and Nathan Thomas – they may be some good odds as well!
Good luck and good punting – and remember to take out some time on Tuesday to remember our diggers and ANZACs who have fought for our country!
