MY CALL: TWO HORSES TO FOLLOW OVER THE NEXT MONTH

By David Fowler | Tuesday, May 16, 2017

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

I left Doomben happy to follow two horses over the next month.

One has an inked-in path while the other’s is uncertain.

New Zealand three-year-old Shocking Luck appeals strongly after a comprehensive Rough Habit Plate win.

This is traditionally a strong Queensland Derby guide.

He goes forward in his races and has an excellent turn of foot.

With only seven starts on the board, he is a progressive young stayer who will use Saturday week‘s Grand Prix as his lead up en route to the Derby.

Good Standing is another above-average three-year-old who humbled his rivals in the Queensland Day Stakes.

He’s always had his toe in the deep end and, similarly to Shocking Luck, gives himself every chance with his on-pace racing pattern.

He’ll be hard to beat in Saturday week’s Fred Best Classic and a win would earn him automatic entry to the Stradbroke.

The Queensland Guineas on the same day is a handy alternative if he didn’t make the Straddy cut.

I’m not as enthusiastic about the two-year-old race from a future viewpoint.

This was one of the few races where the tempo was strong and was tailormade for backmarkers to feature.

The winner Tangled fell into this category.

I’ll reserve my judgement.

It’s picture postcard weather today but that could all be about to change.

Showers are predicted for Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

And it’s pretty obvious at this time of year that you don’t need a lot of rain for our tracks to deteriorate fairly rapidly.

It’s wait and see.

The rail moves to 2.5 metres this weekend and the track was rated a soft 6 this morning.

A quick mention about the Racing Mass on June 4.

All denominations are welcomed at Our Lady Help Of Christians in Manson Road, Hendra.

The Mass begins at 11am and light refreshments will be served afterwards.
