WINNO'S KILCOY KASH, KILCOY JUNE 17
By Darren Winningham | Friday, June 16, 2017
This week the Kilcoy Race Club has their annual Bruce Duncan Memorial Jockey Challenge program – and it is a TAB meeting! So there is plenty of chances to win lots and, if you are going to the track, to skin the bookies!
The track is rated HEAVY – the rail in the normal position and the weather is forecast to be great!
By the way – my theory for this track is if they can lead – or they have won here before then they usually do well!
The pacing races have been called off due to the state of the track, however, the children’s pacing races will still go ahead and they are always fun!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Race 1
We start the day with a small but competitive field of six runners. There are a few here that have performed well at the track as well.
Legs Unbarred (4) likes to lead and may prove hard to run down on a wet track. I see that apprentice Stephanie Lacy is back riding after a recent injury as well! Welcome back Stephanie!
O’Spacehello (5) won first up here at Kilcoy on 12 May and since then the David Murphy trained mare has had two starts at Ipswich where she has performed well – a change a jockey this week with Beau Appo taking the ride. She should be hard to beat here and has won on a soft track.
I think the race is between these two – so take your pick and get on!
Selections: 5-4-3-2

Race 2
Charlie’s Dust (3) looks like one that can improve here over the 1200 metres. Has some previous form prior to a spell that looks solid and first up ran a nice race at the Gold Coast when beaten 5 lengths. This weekend the Stephen Kirkwood trained gelding is second up and drawn nice. He has a claim for apprentice Nick Keal as well - who does ride this track well. Looks like a genuine chance here.
Sweet Red Wine (5), trained by Desleigh Forster, has had 2 months off since his last run where he was sent our favourite at Ipswich over 1690 metres and seemed to not run the distance out. This week back to 1200metres and with the freshen up – we may see an improved performance.
I see that Lilivale Stud and trainer Stewart Barr have Joyfily (10) engaged here. The 3 year old filly is second up here after a nice performance first up at Nanango. She seems to be one with some ability and may take the next step here in what looks an average bunch.
Ben Robinson trains Journalist (7) which has some solid form on heavy and soft tracks. He may be some value here this weekend and he seems to race on the speed. Selections: 3-10-5-7

Race 3
The Butler McDermott Lawyers Handicap over 1900mm is our third race. These people are great supporters of the Kilcoy Race Club so if you ever need the advice or assistance of a lawyer make sure you contact them.
Looks a race in two here – Wimpole Street (1) and General Assault (3).
Paul Butterworth has had a good recent run with his stable topped off by a great win in the 2017 Group 1 J.J. Atkins with Capital Gain and Jim Byrne. He has General Assault (1) engaged here – another nice ride for Beau Appo. This gelding (not Beau) has had a win on a heavy track so should be right in this race. He is stepping up to the 1900 metres for the first time – looks like he will race well.
Wimpole Street (1) won here back in April when ridden by Stephanie Lacy – this week trainer Louise White has gone for the claim with Nick Keal aboard to offset the mammoth 61.0kilograms. One thing is for sure he will be in the race for a long way!
The best of the rest is probably Famechon Baroness (6) who is having her fourth run after a spell and looks like she will appreciate the distance. With a winning record with only four wins from 43 starts she doesn’t win too often but the wet conditions may favour this one here.
Selections: 3-1-6

Race 4
I think the key to this race is looking at the form out of the race that was run here on 12 May when Brilliant Diva (5) beat Whatever Miss (2) and Jeptoo (3). I think the race is between these three again.
I really thought that the race on that occasion was won by a gem of a ride by Nick Keal on Brilliant Diva (5) and he is aboard again this weekend – drawn barrier 1 and has 2 wins from 2 starts at Kilcoy. The only negative is she has no heavy track form.
Whatever Miss (2) was unlucky last start when beaten by Brilliant Diva (5) – so on the balance of probabilities, drawn barrier 2 and with some solid heavy track form this may be the one to be on this weekend.
I think that you can safely bet on one and save on the other or even take a quinella here!
Jeptoo (4) has had a couple of starts since that defeat. She will be happy being back over the shorter 800 metres this weekend – Hannah Phillips has a great riding record on this mare with 13 starts – 7 wins and 4 placings.
The other one that you need to consider is Dragon Street (1), trained by Brenton Snelling and to be ridden by Montanna Savva who claims 3 kilograms here. This gelding has a wonderful record at Kilcoy with 9 starts for 5 wins and 2 placings and should be at home on the heavy track.
It is an even bunch here this week but a competitive race to start off the Quadrella at Kilcoy!
Selections: (2-5) - 4-1

Race 5
Doumbek (4) is third up here for the Darryl Hansen team at the Sunshine Coast after a stable change from Graham Pollock. He won first up here in a dominant fashion – but gave Michael Hellyer one hell of a ride.
Last start he went to the Gold Coast, hung out and did everything possible wrong. This weekend there have been numerous gear changes to correct this wayward runner – I see that veteran jockey Jason “Hoops” Hoopert has been engaged for the ride. A senior rider this weekend may make all the difference.
Out of the same race that Doumbek (4) won at Kilcoy Make No Mistake (5) finished second. Whilst she was beaten by 5 lengths on that occasion it was her first race start and she did look lost on the track. She then came out and dominated a good field at Toowoomba her next start when she led all the way under the urgings of apprentice Nick Keal. He retains the ride again here.
I think that these are both genuine chances here - but I tell you what - I am keen on Make No Mistake if she can handle the heavy track,
She is my best for the day!
Hidden Sequel (8) returns to Kilcoy and has drawn a barrier this weekend after previously winning here and then not having much luck in recent runs with her barrier draws. One to watch here as she has drawn barrier 3 and could just be ridden off the speed and come home late as she did last time she won at Kilcoy.
Aquajewel (6) has drawn wide so will need some luck with Amelia Denby riding this one for Alan Jones. However, her only race career win was on a heavy track so she may perform best in the going.
The top weight Bogey Man (1) comes off a last start maiden win at the Sunshine Coast where he looked impressive leading all the way.
Selections: 5-4-8-6 rough chance 1

Race 6
This is the toughest race on the program – anything could win this!
I am tipping Sonador’s Princess (6) on top with no confidence at all – just I think she is third up from a spell and probably will be suited racing on the speed here at Kilcoy.
Lady Duporth (1) has had a stable change. Lilivale Stud owns this one and now she is trained by Stewart Barr. I think she is down in grade here this weekend, has the blinkers off as well and I do recall her running some nice races on some damp tracks. She doesn’t win too often (31 starts – 2 wins) so take your chances here.
Ben Currie has Mishani Shiraz (8) nominated here as well – second up this weekend. She has won previously second up. No jockey declared at this stage but she may figure in the finish as well.
This could be a race for the bookies so be careful with your investments!
Selections: 6-8-1

Race 7 – 2017 Keith Beavis Memorial Cup
A massive field of 18 nominated – 12 to run with 6 emergencies – let’s hope the race holds up!
Some of the serious contenders have drawn off the track here, but when the field reduces they may not be so badly dealt with.
Look the class runner is Monsieur Gustave (2) – loves to lead and dominate and dictate terms in front – but a heavy track, barrier 18, 60.5kilograms and a wet track, these are the questions that need to be answered. On the positive side a good second up record – with three starts ,2 wins and a third.
Where’s ThatDragon (7) from the Kelly Doughty yards on the Gold Coast loves the heavy tracks – 2 starts for 2 wins. It is well in here with the claim for apprentice Jarrod Woodhouse.
Reigning Thunder (6) normally races on the speed and has some good performances on wet tracks so must be considered. Johnhro (3) is having his fourth start this weekend after a spell. Steph Lacy takes the ride and has had 2 rides for a win and 1 second on this gelding. He does love the wet tracks as well and has an important gear change with blinkers going back on this weekend – something that needs to be noted.
Oradonna (10) was impressive first up at the Sunshine Coast winning over 1000metres – has a good second up record and must be considered. Belle Express (12) is second up here and has drawn nicely – not sure about heavy going but has some good form on the slow tracks and will appreciate the drop in weight this weekend after carrying 63kgs last start at Goondiwindi. Desleigh Forster has Zendaye (13) in the race as well. This three year old gelding is back in class from some of his previous runs and has performed well on slow and heavy going in the past. He has drawn well and Amelia Denby has the ride (remember Amelia Winno famous last words – “go forward at Kilcoy”).
It is an open race to get out of in the last – but what a way to finish a grand day at Kilcoy!
Selections: 6-3-7-2 rough chances 10,12,13
