WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JULY 8
By Darren Winningham | Friday, July 7, 2017
Last week WINNO ventured to the Gold Coast for a massive 9 race meeting – a great day out!
This week he has been busy with a trip to Grafton on Thursday – the track looks in great condition for the upcoming week and a half of the 2017 Grafton Carnival.
This week we are back at Doomben the track should be rated as “SOFT” with the track subjected to showers on Friday. The rail is out 6.5 metres the entire circuit – this may provide a definite benefit to the front runners this weekend.
I have done a brief summary this week – as I really do not like the meeting and the track may have some bias and be wet.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Race 1
Rancho Montoya (5) was impressive winning on debut at Ipswich. Stepping up to Saturday grade this weekend - can he make the progression? Real Princess (7) has a gear change this week with the addition of blinkers. I think this one is a likely improver. She has been racing in higher class races and the 1350 metres here this week should improve her chances. Good each way value at $8 – but she will probably settle off the speed and make her run late.
Selections: 5-7-9-2

Race 2
An open Class 3 race – no real interest here at all.
I have gone with Just Excel (12) from the Tony Gollan stables to be ridden by Jim Byrne. I like this one as she is drawn well and probably will be the likely leader and prove hard to run down.
David Vandyke has Exceed Battle (6) engaged. Last start she led at the Sunshine Coast on a heavy track and was dominant. She likes to race handy and on the speed – so will be right in this.
Selections: 12-6-11-2 rough chance 14

Race 3
Darktown Strutter (5) trained by Kelly Schweida is looking for a hat trick of wins here this weekend – she has been well supported from $3.50 to $1.95. That’s under the odds for me – but some punters like the red coloured odds.
Legadema (1) has the Toby Edmonds & Jeff Lloyd team polish. Looks forward as well with a nice trial win recently at Doomben – watch out for this one!
Selections: 5-1-2-4
************************************************************************************************
Race 4
A BM80 over 2040metres race – on a rain effected track – not for me.
I am tipping the two coming out of recent Sydney runs – Loving Home (1) and Get on the Grange (4).
Get on the Grange (4) appeals to me as he should be ridden on the speed or lead with Damien Browne in the saddle.
Brigadier (10) is an interesting runner – and will handle the wet track. Last weekend he went around at the Gold Coast carrying 62.0kilograms and ran a nice race. This week I see Tegan Harrison has been booked for the ride. I wonder, with the drop in weight this week (8 kilograms), that Tegan may take this one to the lead and try and run them into the ground? Only time will tell.
Selections: 4-1-3-10

Race 5
I think this race could see a Gollan stable trifecta.
Not certain that they will finish in the order I have tipped but they all look well placed here.
His three runners are Sheiswhatsheis (4), Lord Coconut (5) and Pindan Pearl (6) all have genuine chances.
Mr Epic (2) has genuine wet track form – if they track gets into the heavy range this Toby Edmonds runner will come right into this race.
Selections: 4-5-6-2 rough chance 7

Race 6
The first leg of the Quaddie this week – what a tough assignment!
Irish Constabulary (1) was well backed pre race last start – just missed out in running down Burning Passion in the W.J.Healy. Back in grade and up in the weights this week but if he runs up to that form should be hard to toss.
I like Land Office (9) purely at the weights – with Ruby Ride to ride this one at 51 kilograms. This gelding loves the sting out of the track. You will probably find this one out in front here and at the weights looks a good gamble at around $5.
I have always had an opinion of Magic I Am (10). It has had two recent barrier trials and likes the soft tracks. This week she is partnered by the Bridget Grylls who comes off a winning treble at the Gold Coast last weekend (I did manage to back all three so I may be a little biased).
Selections: 9-1-10-6 rough chance 7

Race 7
Backslapper (11) won well last start over the Rockhampton Carnival – down in weights this week and will handle the wet conditions. Anthony Allen retains the ride and he should race on the speed.
Better Land (4) finished off the race well last start – again will appreciate the wet conditions and drop in weight. Jim Byrne takes over this weekend and he looks well placed.
Neuschwanstein (7) loves wet tracks and normally can race handy as well. He is first up this weekend and whilst his first up record is nothing to brag about the wet conditions will favour this one. Keep your eye on this runner in weeks to come if the tracks are wet as he usually performs best third up from a spell.
Tamrookum (9) was dynamic at the Gold Coast ) last weekend when leading all the way. Stepping up here in grade and to a Saturday city run, he must have shown something to trainer to John Morrisey to back him up here this weekend. The key booking o Jeff Lloyd should be noted.
Selections: 4-11-7-8 rough chance 9

Race 8
I am staying solid here. I tipped Madame De Ban (12) first up at Ipswich. I think that the run was super – the track probably didn’t suit her and this weekend at Doomben we will see the best of her.
The Richard Laming trained Abohar (9) ran well at Ipswich – this weekend at Doomben look for this form to be franked . He does like wet surfaces as well with no placings ever on Good tracks – something to consider when having a bet on this one.
Cruising Speed (5) and Notonyourlife (4) met in the same race last start. Jeff Lloyd was able to dictate terms in front on Cruising Speed (5) and get the chocolates whilst Robbie Fradd on Notonyourlife (4) came late and just could not make up the ground to knock off the leader.
I think the result may be the same this weekend as I would think that Lloyd will surge forward on Cruising Speed (5) this week again from the nice barrier draw. Unfortunately for Notonyourlife (4) barrier 16 will probably mean that he will have to be ridden from behind again and he will have to give the leaders a big start. With the rail out so far it may again be hard to get home to beat them..
Selections: 12-9-5-4 rough chance 7

Race 9
This must be the toughest race on the day.
So open – so many chances.
I am tipping Raja Ampat (5) who went around last weekend at the Sunshine Coast. I have one reservation – that is he normally races off the speed and will need some luck here in the straight to win.
The Matthew Dunn trained Runway Ready (14) will race handy and does like the damp conditions - at around $18 represents good value.
There is a roughie here that has grabbed by attention. Trained by John Meagher, Meet and Greet (16) is at around the $20 mark. Last preparation it ran some nice races in this class of race and was very competitive. He has had two recent barrier trials. Has drawn barrier 8 and normally races forward and on the speed – so I think he ticks a few boxes here.
Prue’s Angel (12) from the Gollan yards is another rough chance. She won her first two career starts over 1200metres and then went back to 1100metres at Ipswich. his weekend, back to a longer distance of 1350metres, I think she will be right in this race.
Selections: 5-16-14-12 rough chances 1 & 9

The tipping competition between Sky Racing’s Josh Fleming and Winno is having a rest this weekend.
But the interest swings to Suncorp Stadium next Wednesday night with the decider – NSW v QLD!
We all know that you QLDers have raised the white flag – excuses such as Thurston and other players being not available – who cares it is a decider! The Series is on the line!
For the record I am going to go ... wait for It ... NSW by 7 in a classic game played hard through the middle in the forwards.
Good luck and good punting!
