WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, AUGUST 12
By Darren Winningham | Friday, August 11, 2017
Last week WINNO tipped the Quaddie and Treble in Brisbane – then he backed up on Monday at the Darwin Cup meeting with the Quaddie and the Treble – something for the punters!
He is a little jaded after his big weekend in Darwin. In the words of the CEO of the Darwin Turf Club, Keith Stacy, “Where else would you want to spend Winter!”
A wonderful suntan was achieved in August with a great few days up there!
I must pay special tribute to the riding performance of Jim Byrne last weekend, winning four races on the nine race program and riding a few placings. His form from the Winter Carnival has carried forward to the first meeting of the new racing season – well done mate!
This week we are back at Doomben the track should be rated as “GOOD” and a warm day is forecast for Saturday with a nine race program scheduled. The rail is out 6 metres the entire course this week. That normally means leaders will have a distinct advantage, so keep your eyes on the first few races for any track bias.
Just for the record – I do not like the meeting.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
************************************************************************************************ Race 1
Mr Epic (1) won well here last start and meets a similar opposition this weekend. Looks like consecutive wins for this Toby Edmonds runner. In the past, once he wins he normally strings a few together.
Selections: 1-3-2-4

Race 2
A Class 3 race over 2000 metres – really??
It must be time to grab some lunch and zip the wallet up tight!
Rob Heathcote was happy with the win of Ingeegoodbe (5) last start over 1600 metres. I think the gelding could go on with it here this week as he looks like the most progressive runner in the race.
Selections: 5-8-3-10 ************************************************************************************************
Race 3
I think the Kelly Schweida runner Beaudacious (7) holds the key to this race. She ran well in her three runs last preparation in a higher class. She has drawn 10 but has the services of Damian Browne which I think that this is an important factor.
I have a big watch on the Kevin Kemp runner Zouzouzakakia (10.) This one is owned by leading Brisbane bookmaker Con Searle – drawn well and can race on the speed. If they are winning by leading in front this one is a genuine chance.
I see that on Wednesday Jag Guthmann-Chester rode his first metro winner at the Sunshine Coast (and then made it a double). It looks like he is going to have a red hot go at winning the Brisbane apprentice title for the 2017/18 season. Let’s see what he can do this weekend. He is a good rider with a future and has a wicked smile and sense of humour!
Selections: 7-6-8-10 rough chance 11

Race 4
Stella Ombra (1) is racing well and looks well placed here with the claim for Tiffani Brooker.
The danger runner is the Matthew Dunn trained Hanwritten (5). He is lightly raced and can race well fresh but in the past has thrown in a terrible run first up. I am saying I will let him go around this weekend and see how he has come back this preparation – but be warned this gelding can run time and has a tonne of ability when right. A win would not surprise me.
Selections: 1-2-5-8
*************************************************************************************************
Race 5
I think the form from two weeks ago will hold up here when Meet and Greet (11) stormed home late to run down Kubis (10). They meet here again here and I cannot see the result changing.
If you are looking for a roughie, Helen Page has Sharpamal (19) engaged here. This week he has drawn well. He will race on the speed and probably lead this lot – this could be the winning form and it could see Luke Tarrant back in the winner’s circle on a Saturday in Brisbane!
Selections: 11-10-19-12 rough chances 4 and 6
************************************************************************************************* Race 6
Last start Oink (12) got too far back in the race won by Prioritise who led all the way. Look for an improved performance this weekend – down in the weight as well.
Drumbeats Choice (6) comes back from a magnificent run in Townsville. He flashed home late after missing the start and went down in a photo. If he jumps well here watch out!
Lordag (2) ran super last start. I think he will have stripped better for that run – look for a possible dominant performance in this class of race.
Selections: 12-6-2-13
************************************************************************************************
Race 7
Lifesaver (21) has been gelded since his last two wins last preparation. He is the sixth emergency and I think if he makes the field he is a genuine chance.
The Edmonds runner, Always Sacred (8) can race well fresh and has won a recent barrier trial. This could be the key here!
Chris Munce has Dot Painting (18) engaged. He resumed with a strong win at the Sunshine Coast after some strong trials. He does not have a great second up record and is stepping up in grade – so an each way chance.
Selections: 21-8-17-11 rough chance 2 & 18
*************************************************************************************************
Race 8
This is a new season three year old race.
I have tipped you all this one a couple of times – Whypeeo (9). Each time he was nominated for town he had drawn wide and Toby Edmonds elected not to run him so he ended up taking him for a first up killing at Ballina where he came out and won by 5.5 lengths. A little impressive I would say. Stepping up to city grade here and drawn extremely well in barrier 2 – this could be my one and only bet for the day!
Tony Gollan has Rock’N’ Summer (7) stepping out for his first Saturday run as well. This one performed well in a midweek debut at Doomben and was also impressive. He has drawn okay and has the services of the in-form Jim Byrne.
Helen Page has Too Easy Bro (8). This gelding won on debut at the Gold Coast when leading. Last start he raced on the speed at Doomben and, to be honest, ran a super race and fought on extremely well.
Cellargirl (1) resumed and won the Bill Carter. She has had a slight break but she is the class runner of this field and despite the wide draw could have a say in the outcome.
Selections: 9-7-8-1 rough chance 10
*************************************************************************************************
Race 9
Jadedfox (13) put in a good performance last start racing handy and on the speed before posting a victory. This weekend she has drawn a better barrier and should be hard again to beat.
Oradonna (3) has been knocking on the door recently. I think she will go better with a ‘Good’ track, however, she has drawn wide in barrier 17 and will need some luck from out there.
Capetown Hussey (8), from the Liam Birchley yards, can race well fresh and has won well at the track.
Mick Lakey has a lightly raced mare nominated here – Final Zero (9). She was great winning first up at Sunshine Coast when she raced handy and shot away in the straight. She is drawn a little awkwardly here in barrier 13, but if Jimmy Orman can get her in and racing handy, and not get caught wide, this one is a genuine contender.
In late mail there has been some serious support for the Tony Gollan runner –Of The Day (19). She is only a lightly raced mare who didn’t really fire last start with a fast pace on in front and getting too far back. I assume she will be ridden closer this week and might be hard to beat.
Selections: 13-19-9-8 rough chance 3

Jockey Challenge
This week it looks like a battle between a number of jockeys – Damian Browne, Ron Stewart and Robbie Fradd. It will come down to the scratchings and if any of them pick up any extra rides.
