WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, AUGUST 19

By Darren Winningham | Friday, August 18, 2017

I was told of a yarn about something that occurred in Brisbane last weekend!

Imagine you have a part share in a horse called “Oink”.

You are a frequent visitor to Brisbane but this particular weekend you are making your way to the EKKA to stable some ponies with your wonderful wife. Driving, like Miss Daisy, around and through Brisbane you have the radio tuned to 4TAB – but at the same time you have the GPS with the lady telling you to stay left – turn right in 100metres – stay right, prepare to merge. You have gone past your destination and you need to do a U Turn at the next intersection.

Meanwhile the race is on!

You miss your entry to the Ekka – you miss the race – but you hear the result after they cross the line with David Fowler saying Oink won well.

I just wished I was there to hear the colourful language!

On that note I must give a mention to the Kelly Schweida stables – they are on fire! A double last weekend with Stella Ombra and then Oink won ... and a massive effort from Damian Browne to get down to 54.5 kilograms to ride him!

Then on Wednesday Cellargirl came out and won impressively on Ekka Day for the Schweida stable. I believe that the longer term goal for this filly is the Golden Rose at Rosehill in a month’s time. She races like she could be a big threat in that race!

This week we are back at Doomben the track should be rated as “GOOD” and a warm day is forecast for Saturday with a nine race program is scheduled.

The rail is out 1 metre the entire course this week. The track is starting to show some wear and tear on it with the racing each week, however, the ground staff are doing a wonderful job keeping it ticking over.

Last week at Doomben Winno put some early money in the punters pockets tipping four of the first six winners on the card but, to be honest, I have been finding it hard to really get into these meetings in recent weeks – so bet carefully!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

*************************************************************************************************

Race 1

There are a few early scratchings in this race. Impregnable (6) ran well here last start – meets weaker opposition this weekend – looks like a win for this Toby Edmonds runner. The betting suggests he is a good thing being smashed from $2.10 into $1.50 so far.

The other runner well supported is Mr Hennessy (1) who has been solid in recent trials. I think this one may lead and prove hard to run down.

Selections: 6-1-5

*************************************************************************************************

Race 2

This race is called the “BIG CHOP.” I think I will call it the “BIG MISS” – it is a tough race!

My selections resemble half a Lotto coupon with such large numbers!

I am going for Jetsonic (16) here who normally races well fresh. Luke Dittman comes to town to take the ride here and it will be given every chance.

The interesting runner is Lady Sioux (10) transferred from Townsville to Steven O’Dea stables. This one does have an impressive record in this class of race and loves 1000 metres. If he has settled in since his last run a month ago he will test this lot!

I will give a mention to Mishani El Lobo trained by Chris Anderson and to be ridden by Brad Stewart. This is the early favourite and has drawn well in barrier 2. You cannot fault the form that Brad Stewart has been in recent weeks. There has been some solid support for this one being confidently backed from $3.10 to $2.70.

Selections: 16-10-17-20

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Rancho Montoya (2) looks well placed here. He won a barrier trial on 8 August. The colt has the services of Damian Browne this run and I think will get the run of the race. Umberto (4) from the Tony Gollan stables won well last start at the Gold Coast after drawing wide. This week he steps up to city grade but looks progressive. Steven O’Dea has another good chance here as well – Francisca (5) - who is shooting for a hat trick of wins here. Again Brad Stewart has the mount on this one.

There has not been much betting movement in this race to date – it may be best to watch any moves for any of these closer to race time.

Selections: 2-4-5-3 rough chance 6

************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Sheiswhatsheis (1) beat Pindan Pearl (8) last start here. These are both trained by Tony Gollan and I think it will probably be the same result here this weekend. The danger runner is Outraged (7) trained by the Kelly Schweida yards and to be ridden by Jeff Lloyd – this one always races well fresh and thunders home late. He is well weighted and may pose a danger as the judge calls a halt to this race.

Selections: 3-8-7-1

*************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Another race decimated by early scratchings!

Look I really don’t think I can tip anything here with any confidence. Anything could win this without surprise.

I will go for the grand old boy Steel Zip (4) a ten year old and still racing well – but who really knows?

Again Tony Gollan is well represented with Charlie Boy (1) and Frespanol (3) who both have serious chances. I probably could make a serious case for L’Entrecote (7) as well here – this seven year old gelding always runs well second up.

It is a lottery take your pick – or just keep your wallet in your pocket and watch!

Selections: 4-7-3-1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 6

Now that Devil Hawk (3) has found the winners stall this one may just go on with it again this week. It was a ten out of ten ride last start by Brad Stewart to get this Chris Waller trained gelding home last start. He looks well placed again here this weekend.

The danger is Stanley (6) who gets in well for the claim for Jag Guthmann-Chester with only 53.5 kilograms on his back. He is only lightly raced and should be storming home at the end.

I liked the run of Legal Procedure (2) in the Townsville Cup last start. The winner Chivadahlii came out and flogged them in the Cairns Cup last weekend. Ruby Ride takes a claim of 3 kilograms – if Legal Procedure can run out the 2200 metres of this race he will be right into it up to his ears.

Selections: 3-6-2-11

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7

An open race here with many chances.

Lady Lark (15) was unlucky last run and if she gets any luck from the wide barrier this weekend I think she can win.

Gypsy Miss (13) seemed to peak on her run last start over the mile in the final 100 metres. She should strip fitter this weekend, however, I am not certain she can run out a solid mile.

Chandana (8) has Jeff Lloyd aboard for Matthew Dunn. This mare does not win often but seems to be building up to a win and may break through this weekend.

Natural Black (6) I thought was genuinely unlucky in the straight last start and should have probably finished closer to the winner Meet and Greet who came out last weekend and won again. This is the danger to my selection and Matthew McGillivray is riding in magnificent form of late – some may say he could win on a rocking horse!

Selections: 15-6-8-13 rough chance 7

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

I was in Darwin the other week and watched Havasay (10) get smashed in the betting and come out and win impressively. I think he gets in well again this weekend so we could see a race to race double for the Liam Birchley and Matthew McGillivray here with any luck.

Khalama (13) has won two in a row over 1050 metres and has been impressive in each of the wins. I am not sure however, if she will run a solid 1200metres. I probably will be proven wrong – but I have a huge question mark on her.

I have tipped Oradonna (16) the last few weeks and each time she has drawn wide and been scratched. She has had a month off. She always races well fresh and is a nice price at $11 with Tiffani Brooker in the saddle. One thing for sure is that she will be flashing home late.

Selections: 10-13-16-7

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

The last race on a marathon day!

Constantine (5) has been racing in superior class of races. The run in the Grafton Guineas was pretty good and I think drawn nicely here this weekend. Chris Munce and Larry Cassidy could be celebrating with a last race win!

At $20 – I like this one each way all day!

Extrasay (15) another one from the Tony Gollan yards to be ridden by Robbie Fradd. I think it was unlucky last start and despite being drawn wide here it should be flashing home late if Fradd can get her in from her wide barrier.

Mishani Sleuth (6) meets Alassak (4) better at the weights this weekend for a recent defeat. I think that he can turn the tables on this runner this weekend. He will need some luck from barrier 13 but Chris Anderson and Brad Stewart have been on fire in recent weeks!

Selections: 5-15-6-4

The tipping competition between Sky Racing’s Josh Fleming and Winno is on again this week!

After towelling Flemo last week - Winno has declared he is going in for the kill this weekend.

I think Flemo is getting ready for his big trip out to Birdsville for the annual race meeting out there – maybe I should take the trip with him just to keep him honest!

We are both is scintillating form with our tips so make sure you tune in on Facebook this weekend to see our ongoing battle!

*************************************************************************************************

Just a heads up – I could appear at a Country Cup next week – stay tuned!

Good luck and good punting!

I really don’t think I can tip anything in race 5 with any confidence. Anything could win this without surprise but I will go for the grand old boy Steel Zip a ten year old and still racing well
