WINNO'S WINNERS: GOLD COAST, AUGUST 26
By Darren Winningham | Friday, August 25, 2017
Last week WINNO made the trek to Kilcoy and had a wonderful day out supporting country racing. I tipped the Quaddie and Treble as well – and what a great day for apprentice Adam Spinks who rode the feature race winner and then followed it up by winning the last race on the program. Well done mate!
Meanwhile, the horses went around at Doomben. As I warned it looked a meeting of many chances and one that I really didn’t like – so I was not surprised with the variety of the results on the day.
This week we are on the Gold Coast the track which should be rated as “GOOD.” An overcast day is forecast for Saturday with a nine race program is scheduled. The rail is out 1 metre from the 1000m to the 400m and then true for the remainder of the track. I just hope there are fine conditions for the Gold Coast Turf Club as the sight from the track looking towards the Surfers skyline is always one to admire. Where else in the world would you get this view?
Just for the record, I think this is another tough meeting and will not be betting with any confidence.
I think next week if these fields continue I may look south for a preview – in either Sydney or Melbourne.
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1
A race with no interest for me – my wallet will be firmly in my pocket.
I am going for the Sydney invader from the Bjorn Baker stables – Positive Problems (4). Good each way odds as well around $7.
The win of Of The Day (8) was impressive last time at Doomben and looks the likely danger.
Selections: 4-8-9

Race 2
This is another race that I have little interest in.
Sony Legend (4) normally races well here and I think gets in well. There seems to be some genuine speed in the race with some tearaway leaders. I expect Paul Hammersley to sit off them before chiming in late and destroying them in the final 100 metres of the race. Selections: 4-1-2
*************************************************************************************************** Race 3
A class 3 race over 1100metres with a massive field – this spells disaster for punters!
Bonsho (7) was dominant in her last start win at Doomben when she defeated Make Her Own Whey (9). I think that she can go on with it here.
The Tony Gollan trained Ignite The Light (3) has had the addition of a tongue tie this weekend – so look out for an improved performance. Jim Byrne takes the ride here.
Make Her Own Whey (9) from the Rob Heathcote yards has a win on the board here at the Gold Coast. Sometimes horses that have won here usually can show up – this may be the case with this runner.
Selections: 7-3-9-6 rough chance 12

Race 4
El Campeador (7) got away with an easy lead last start at Doomben and Jim Byrne made them pay pulling their pants down and going on to win. The gelding has a win at the track. I am not sure Byrne will lead this week – I don’t think he has to – but I am expecting this one to put consecutive wins on the board.
Lordag (3) has been knocking on the door and finally steps up to a suitable distance this weekend – look for a competitive effort here in this race. He has a win at the track as well.
Outraged (4) and Mr Epic (1) round out my selection – both have been racing very consistently of late.
Selections: 7-3-4-1
**************************************************************************************************
Race 5
Michael Costa trains Malkara (2) on the track and it is looking for four consecutive wins since resuming on 5 August. This week marks four runs on a Saturday in a row – the gelding must be thriving on this quick back up as he just keeps on winning. He looks hard to beat but has drawn wide in barrier 15.
There have been some early scratchings so that barrier may not be such a hindrance.
Count Counsel (20) from Matthew Dunn stables at Murwillumbah is looking for a hat trick of wins. I think that this one is the testing material here this weekend. Robbie Fradd has the ride and again this one has drawn badly in barrier 17.
Gregory (18) from the Brian Smith stables has always had some wraps on it. I believe he has had some issues and is just been working into some form . He looms as an outside chance.
Selections: 2-20-15-18
**************************************************************************************************
Race 6
The first leg of the Quaddie. The four legs all look hard this week – this could pay a motza if you jag it!
There were a couple backed in their last starts at Doomben. They were Neptune Palace (11) and Revaldor (15). The both ran well with the money on, nearly landing the prize – they both ran second in their respective races.
The Tony Sears trained Tycoon Ace (5) led last start at Doomben and ran them into the ground. I am not sure if he will get such an easy time in front this weekend – but he has a great record here (2 wins from 2 starts) so that places him in good stead.
Selections: 15-11-5-13
**************************************************************************************************** Race 7
This is a pretty good grade three year old race - probably one of the better races on the program.
I am tipping Italia Bella (3). This one is still a maiden but debuted during the Winter Carnival. I know the stable has a big opinion on this one. Normally just sits off the speed. If she has taken some benefit from the spell I am looking for a forward showing here. Of note there has been no official barrier trial.
Whypeeo (6) is trained on the track by Toby Edmonds. Last start he seemed to race ungenerously – this start he has the addition of a tongue tie. Maybe that is the key and we will see an improved performance.
I remember Colosimo (4) winning her first two career race starts when trained by Steven O’Dea – she was then sent to the Waller stable and she hasn’t done that well since. I just wonder, back in Queensland and the warmer conditions and a track she has won on, whether we may see a dramatic improvement this weekend.
Basara (7) owned by the Eureka Stud Syndicate was dynamic in her debut win at Doomben. That run gave me the impression that she would improve over 1200 metres and may get up to 1400 metres. Again Tegan Harrison is aboard this one – could be some nice odds!
Selections: 3-4-6-7 ***************************************************************************************************
Race 8
Alassak (5) has been racing in consistent form and managed a win last start. I do they that now this David Murphy gelding has cracked it for a win he will go on with it.
Denarius (3) always runs an honest race and has an important gear change this weekend with pacifiers going on for this run. Whilst he hasn’t won at the Gold Coast he does love the 1400 metres.
The Steven O’Dea trained Lothario (11) stormed home last start from an impossible position to snatch second from a wide barrier at Doomben. This weekend I wonder whether jockey Jag Guthmann-Chester will ride him a little more forward.
I see that Port Macquarie based jockey Robert Agnew is making his way to the Gold Coast to ride Landmarks (13) who he won on last start at Casino in the feature race the Casino Cup. This Scott Cumming trained gelding normally races on the speed and this may suit this track on the weekend. A genuine each way chance!
Selections: 5-3-11-8 rough chance 13

Race 9
Well here we go – what a stitch up! The last race of the day – the last leg of the Quaddie and it is a “No Metro Win Handicap” over 1800 metres. I would hope that you are all in front come this race and you have taken the field in your Quaddies!
I am tipping one trained in NSW by Damien Lane based at Wyong. This trainer has been in great form in recent months and his stable is firing! I think the engagement of Damian Browne is a great lead here for his chance – Another Larga (6). This is some good odds as well at $12.
The Toby Edmonds trained Chloe’s Comet (2) was very good in defeat last start at Doomben. She has drawn terrible in barrier 20 and it will need all of Jeff Lloyd’s wizardry to get this one home from there.
What’s That (11) from the Tony Gollan stables looks like he is looking for a longer distance than his last start win over 1680 metres at Ipswich. Nicely drawn and should be given the run of the race here from barrier 9 – he is going to be in the finish.
As I alluded to at the start it is a very open race to finish off the program – maybe if you need to have a bet in the last you may be best served in waiting for any late betting moves.
Selections: 6-2-11-14 rough chance 5 and 7
***************************************************************************************************
Early Quaddie (races 2 to 5 NSW TAB only)
1,4 / 3,7,9 / 3,4,7 / 2,15,20 - cost is $54 for $1

Another open field – maybe I will go for Michael Cahill – he could be good odds!
****************************************************************************************************
The tipping competition between Sky Racing’s Josh Fleming and Winno is back on again this week!
I copped a touch up by Josh last week – he was in great form on a pretty hard day. I must give him credit where credit is due.
However, I would just like to remind him of his Broncos rubbish performance on Thursday night when thrashed by the Eels – maybe that is why I call them the “Bronchokers”
Good luck and good punting!
