WINNO'S WINNERS: RANDWICK, SEPTEMBER 2
By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 1, 2017
RANDWICK, SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2017
This week Randwick hosts the time honoured Chelmsford Stakes (Group 2) and the Tramway Stakes (Group 2). The track should be rated as “GOOD” and a nice day is forecast for Saturday in Sydney where a nine race program is scheduled. The rail is out 6.0 metres the entire course this week.
This looks an exciting program with many of these looking for Group 1 glory in the weeks to come and then should head onto the Spring Carnival in Melbourne – the good class horses are back!
I will be biased and say the racing in NSW is the best in the country this weekend!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1
An even bunch to face the starter for the first race – let’s see what happens here and what the pattern of racing might be.
The topical tip with all the media going on about North Korea and its mad man launching missiles earlier in the week is Island Missile (5).
I do think that this Peter and Paul Snowden trained, Triple Crown Syndication owned gelding has the form to knock off the favourites here. He is looking for a hat trick of wins this weekend and I thought the win at Kembla Grange last start was full of merit. He has Tye Angland aboard as well – he knows how to get a good priced one home as well!
Super Ex (6) is looking for three wins in a row as well. This colt is trained by Mark Newnham who has been having some good success of late and he should be respected.
This is a good, open race.
Selections: 5-6-3-2 rough chance 8

Race 2
Not a race to get excited about. These staying races normally turn up a different result each week.
Chris Waller holds the key to the race here with four of the nine runners. I am tipping a Waller trifecta!
I like the lightly raced Up ‘n’ Rolling (8) after a solid win at Canterbury last start. He is a five year old gelding with only seven starts behind his name. Kerrin McEvoy is aboard. I think he will step up nicely and be very competitive at the 2000 metres. This runner has been smashed since betting has opened firming from $2.60 to $1.90.
The other two Waller runners – Multifacets (4) and Vaucluse Bay (5) - have been plodding around in this grade for a while now without much luck.
Selections: 8-4-5-9
**************************************************************************************************
Race 3
The Waller/Bowman combination combine here with Jaminzah (4) who comes back to Sydney after two wins at Flemington. He looks well placed here and should be difficult to beat.
The one that I think is a genuine each way chance to topple the favourite is More To Gain (3). He is trained by Amanda Turner & Mauro Poletti and will be ridden by regular jockey Peter Wells.
This one was solid first up at Rosehill and has a good second up record with a win and a second from three starts.
This looks a nice quinella for mine!
Selections: 4-3-5-2
**************************************************************************************************
Race 4
This is one of those TAB Highway Handicaps where anything can happen. Bet carefully.
There has been a few scratchings already so the field has been drastically reduced.
I like the looks of Schedule (6) trained at Mack Griffith at Mudgee. This gelding normally runs well fresh and my NSW spies tell me the barrier trial at Bathurst was full of merit and if the horse was let go could have put panels on them – so that will do me!
Rodney Northam trains My Tagoson (4) at Scone. Last start Hugh Bowman paired with this gelding here and won well over 1600 metres. I think he will be ridden the same here this weekend - just off the speed - as there appears to be some genuine speed in the race. That may mean the drop back to 1400metres may not impact on him.
Makfi Lass (8) was solid in defeat behind Care to Think here a month ago. The form from that race has proved to be very solid so she will be a genuine chance in this race as well.
Selections: 5-4-8-9
**************************************************************************************************
Race 5
The 2017 Concorde Stakes over 1000metres (Group 3) – blink and you may miss this race!
The Doomben 10,000 winner Redzel (1) resumes here and comes off a striking barrier trial win at Randwick two weeks ago. I just think you should stick with class – this one looks well placed even with the 60 kilogram impost.
The logical dangers are Spieth (3) and Nieta (5) who have both won recent barrier trials and look well placed here to challenge the top weight.
Selections: 1-3-5-6
***************************************************************************************************
Race 6
Now here are a nice bunch of three year olds to contest the Furious Stakes (Group 2).
Only seven runners at this stage – but wow there is some talent here!
Formality (1) and Alizee (5) met a fortnight ago in the Silver Shadow Stakes. I think that form will give us the winner of this race.
To be honest I think that the set weight conditions of this race should see the same result here this weekend – so in a sense it is just a “Formality”!
I am very keen to see how the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott trained Joyfilly Ours (6) goes. She was placed in the Sires Produce in New Zealand last preparation and I really think that this filly may be one to watch over the coming weeks over a longer distance.
I hope I have not put the mock on Kerrin McEvoy. I have just tipped him to ride a race to race treble!
Selections: 1-5-3-6
***************************************************************************************************
Race 7
The 2017 Chelmsford Stakes (Group 2). I will use a phrase that goes down in history from Norman May – but I will change it – and it is “Winx, Winx, Winx” for the Chelmsford!
Now there is a challenge for Sky Channel’s Darren Flindell!
The mighty mare is looking for 19 successive wins. The history buffs have been out all week looking for reasons to see her beaten and looking at the history of the Chelmsford and how some favourites have been brought undone by this race.
Well keep on looking for excuses - she wins easy!
As for the placings – who cares just stand and applaud as she crosses the line for win number 19!
Selections: 11-8-1-10

Race 8
This must be the toughest race on the program – the 2017 Tramway Stakes (Group 2).
Ecuador (6) is a war horse. I must declare I have a soft spot for this gelding that normally leads and tries to run his opposition into the ground!
Invincible Gem (7), trained by Kris Lees in Newcastle, won the Missile Stakes first up in extraordinary fashion. It was a super win. I am just not that confident this weekend on the “Good” surface - but this mare is exciting and could be flashing home late.
Tom Melbourne (9) was a massive tip first up from a spell when narrowly beaten at Rosehill. He was smashed in the betting but just failed to post the win when being beaten by Kingsguard.
The Virginian (10) has had a stable change and is now trained by Brett Cavanough. If this five year old gelding turns up on the day he could easily smash this field and make them look second rate.
This is a great race with many chances.
Selections: 6-7-9-10
**************************************************************************************************
Race 9
I really think it is a match between Rocket Commander (4) and Washington Heights (7) – take your pick!
They both have superior form to their opposition and look the two to beat here.
I will put the Chris Waller trained Washington Heights (7) on top to win – that makes it five winners for me for Kerrin McEvoy. It could be a day to remember for him – and me as well!
The other interesting runners from the Waller yards are Veladero (10) and Dawn Wall (11) who both resume after a Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign.
I think Veladero was a victim of the Eagle Farm track whilst Dawn Wall was super unlucky in the Queensland Oaks. She may just come back in the Spring and dominate her opposition!
Selections: 7-4-11-10
