WINNO'S WINNERS: ROSEHILL, SEPTEMBER 9

By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 8, 2017

Well let’s review last week ...

It was a week of “FIVES”!!

I did tip Kerrin McEvoy to win 5 races on the program at Randwick last Saturday – he did!

WINNO chimed in with a great performance tipping 5 winners on the Randwick program – four of them I declared as my best bets!

The Best Bets (from last Saturday) were:
Race 2 - Up ‘n’ Rolling (8) around $1.90
Race 5 – Redzel (1) around $3.60
Race 6 – Formality (1) around $3.60
Race 9 - Washington Heights (7) around $2.00

Then I sat at home Sunday and, in total awe, Iwatched Joao “The Magic Man” Moreira ride the first five winners at Sha Tin on the opening day of their new racing season!

So there you go ... 5 – 5 – 5!

Does that number mean anything to anyone?

This week we are headed to Rosehill for the Sydney program. With some important races scheduled for the upcoming weeks in Sydney be sure to watching them this week as the form should carry forward into weeks to come.

We are racing on a “GOOD” surface with the rail in its true position for the entire course.

Now it is time to get into the program for this week!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

Since I like the number “5” at the moment I will just go with the flow here and tip Mariquita (5) to be ridden again this weekend by Rachel King. This Gerald Ryan trained mare won over the track and distance a fortnight ago and looks well placed again to post another win.

Chris Waller has Midnight Delight (7) engaged and I would say to you to forgive the last start run at Canterbury where she just didn’t cope with the track. Back here at Rosehill and the open spaces she could be the big improver and at $7 represents great each way value.

Selections: 5-7-2-6

Race 2

The TAB Highway Handicap is scheduled early this week. It is a tough affair this race.

Suncraze (1) has been very consistent racing in many Highway races in recent months. He broke through last start at Randwick over 1400 metres and this week drops back to 1200 metres. That does concern me a little however he has had a solid trial at Tamworth over 1000metres to sharpen him up for this assignment.

The Mid North Coast runner is Northern Knight (3). He is trained by Brett Bellamy at Coffs Harbour and he is unbeaten in three career starts – and to be fair has been running some good times. I am giving this one the nod here.

Mossman Gorge (4) is trained by Matthew Dale in Canberra. He won over 1100 metres here last start but I am not to keen on him running a genuine 1200metres.

The one that could be the biggest improver and may cause some drama for the other runners is the Danny Williams trained gelding Don’t Give A Damn (7) who won first up at Goulbourn. They jumped out of trees to back it first up and it duly saluted. I think that there is some scope for this one to step up and challenge them here. Of course he gets a length on them all with Kerrin McEvoy engaged to ride him as well.

Selections: 3-1-7-4

Race 3

The Waller stable has four runners in this race and they all have genuine chances.

Will keep this short and to the point. Alward (1), the topweight, has been in tremendous form and deserves another win in this class. Hugh Bowman in the saddle ... looks a good thing.

The one that may improve this weekend is the Ron Quinton trained Imanui (11) who I think has been racing as if he has been looking for a longer distance. In each run since resuming from a spell he has settled back and made sustained runs to finish off strongly. He has had a recent barrier trial to get him ready for the run - look for an improved performance.

Selections: 1-11-3-8

****************************************************************************************************

Race 4 Stan Fox Stakes

Tough race this one - some nice types here as well.

I am going for Trapeze Artist (2) to win. Back this week to set weight conditions I think he gets in well against his opposition. He has had a nice barrier trial on Monday this week to get him ready to flog this field.

Gold Standard (7) from the Waterhouse & Bott stables is the logical danger. I expect that this one will race a little more forward this week.

Sanctioned (8) from team Godolphin and James Cummings ran a nice race first up. He has a pretty good second up record and he gets the chance to frank that form again here this week.

Selections: 2-7-8-3

***************************************************************************************************

Race 5 Theo Marks Stakes

Ok here goes - Egg Tart (6) cannot win – actually won’t run in the top four!

Now let’s see if I have egg on my face after the race! I think that these gallopers may be too fast for her first up. She is a super mare and I think she will strip better for the run.

I am tipping Euro Angel (7), with a nice first up effort behind Sweet Redemption last start, to kick on here and win a nice race.

The danger in my opinion is Good Project (2) who ran in the Stradbroke over the Brisbane Winter Carnival and was a touch unlucky – well actually VERY unlucky! I see he has had two barrier trials and at around $14 represents great each way value in this race.

Kevin Pitstock has a share in the bottom weight here – Cannyescent (8). He has been in great form in restricted class races. The real test comes this weekend when he takes on this lot at Group 2 level.

Selections: 7-2-3-8

****************************************************************************************************

Race 6 2017 Sheraco Stakes

The first leg of the Quaddie – a great race!

I am tipping the bonny mare part owned by Bruno Micalizzi – Bonny O’Reilly (7). I have to tip her after seeing her run over the Brisbane Winter Carnival ... plus I did promise to put Bruno on my shoulders if she won the Tatts Tiara. Luckily for me she had no luck in the race and I didn’t have to do it!

This mare is undefeated at Rosehill with four wins from four starts – I like her here. Good luck Bruno!

The two seasoned mares that she faces will be stiff opposition – they are Ghisoni (1) and Daysee Doom (3).

Ghisoni (1) from team Godolphin has been ticking over nicely and has been racing well in her recent trials. She is a serious contender here!

Then you have the Ron Quinton trained Daysee Doom (3) who won a nice trial ten days ago. Andrew Adkins stays aboard this mare and she will make her presence felt in the finish.

This is a wonderful race – make sure you get in front of a TV and have a good look at this. It could be a great form race in the weeks to come!

Selections: 7-3-1-8

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7 Run to the Rose

The 2017 Run to the Rose (Group 2) – the precursor to the Golden Rose race in a fortnight.

The scribes have said all week it is a match race between the Snowden and Ryan runners – Pariah (4) in team Snowden corner and Menari (5) in team Ryan corner.

I tend to agree! This is a battle royal and we will see the victor rocket into favouritism for the Grand Final in two weeks time.

I have a healthy respect for the team Hawkes runner Chauffeur (7) who was beaten by Pariah last start in the San Domenico over 1100 metres. I am looking forward to seeing this one run this weekend as I think he is a serious contender for the Golden Rose.

Siege of Quebec (9) was beaten by Menari last start – again I think he will strip fitter and the 1200 metres will be more to his liking as well.

Selections: 4-5-7-9 rough chance 1

***************************************************************************************************

Race 8

This is the leg last weekend that destroyed my BIG 6 and Quaddie selections. Let’s hope I can do better this weekend!

Tango Rain (4) has come back well and has been racing consistently. In an open race he will be thereabouts again.

Sir Plush (6) likes the Rosehill track. I expect to see an improved run here this weekend. He was beaten by Bonny O’Reilly (see Race 6) and that form may be worth following!

The one that could blow them all out is the Chris Waller trained Zumberlina (13). She was hampered last preparation by heavy tracks – she is a real duffer on the heavy surfaces. Now, back on a good, fast surface and back at Rosehill where she has won three from three she is a genuine contender!

Selections: 4-6-13-8 rough chance 9

***************************************************************************************************

Race 9

The last race on a marathon day of great racing. If you are in front come the last it may be worthwhile shouldering arms and keeping your wallet in your pocket!

A tough way to finish off the day – too hard for me!

For the record - short and brief here from me – I’ll take Peacock (6) from Godolphin, ridden by Blake Shinn, to win the race.

I like the chances of Oklahoma Girl (2). If there is some genuine speed in the race watch out for her to be powering home out late and wide. She is a class mare and is first up. She will take improvement from the run and you may want to be on her next start.

The Pharoah (5) rounds out my top three – a good record on the Rosehill surface should see this one in the finish.

I would bring to your attention Galaxy Warrior (16) ... first up – drawn wide ... but the recent win at Mudgee in a trial was full of merit. There must be some confidence from somewhere as there has been some solid support for this one ... being backed from $31 to $17.

Selections: 6-2-5-11 rough chance 16

Jockey Challenge

This week it looks like a great battle between Hugh Bowman and Brenton Avdulla – I am going for Hugh!
