WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 16
By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 15, 2017
This week we are back at Doomben where the track should be rated as “GOOD” and a warm day is forecast for Saturday – a nine race program is scheduled. The rail is out 0.5 metres the entire course this week.
I big shout out to Sky Racing’s Josh Fleming who gave me a towelling last weekend in our tipping competition – he was in great form last weekend.
The final shout out this week is to Heidi Whalley who is celebrating her 21st Birthday on Saturday – Happy Birthday Heidi!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Race 1
A small field to contest the Open sprint for the day.
Tony Gollan and Jim Byrne with Hi I’m Back (5) – first up from a spell after a recent barrier trial win – I am going for this one. Hopefully this is a good way to start the program off and put Josh Fleming back in his box!
The danger is Straturbo (1) who has been solid in a recent barrier trial win at Rosehill. He always races well fresh and to be honest gets in well here with the three kilo claim for apprentice Ruby Ride.
Selections:5-1-2-3

Race 2
I have been on the Rob Heathcote trained Ingeegoodbe (2) in his last three starts. I see no reason to hop off this weekend, Sure he is up in grade and meeting tougher opposition but he looks one that is really developing and will be hard to beat again. I just cannot get off!
Rock On Ivy (5) got to the front last start and it looked like the big priced betting plunge was going to pay off for the Donald “Ducky” Baker trained runner but she was run down last by Ingeegoodbe (2) and looks like it may be a match race here again this weekend.
Selections: 2-5-4-3

Race 3
I see the Tamworth trainer Sue Grills has hitched her float and is heading to Doomben this weekend – she is a great trainer and will be represented by Polskie Prince (4) ridden by the inform apprentice Jag Guthmann-Chester.
I think this eight year old gelding needs a nice firm track to shine and he gets that this weekend and with the weight relief for JAG he should be very competitive here. I suppose since she is coming to my turf I will have to take time out to get a photo with her win lose or draw!
The rest of them are resuming and it is hard to get a serious gauge on them.
The Tony Gollan stables have The Ambassadore (8) resuming – he trialled solidly recently in blinkers and has them on for this run. Maybe this could see an improvement this preparation.
The likely leaders are Snitzel’s Joy (9) and Girl In A Million (13). I think that the Ben Currie trained Girl In A Million (13) probably has the speed to cross from the wide barrier and lead them. Brad Stewart rides the filly this weekend and he has been in solid form in recent meetings.
The other runner I mentioned is Snitzel’s Joy (9) – from the Danny Bougoure yards. He has chosen to go with the claim for Tiffani Brooker here for this first up assignment. Again she goes well first up and normally likes to lead.
I just hope that she sits off the Currie runner and then peels around the heels and comes late. She looks forward for this first up run with a solid hit out in a trial at Doomben around four weeks ago – she is good value as well at $16.
Selections: 9-8-13-4 rough chance 1

Race 4
Not a race I can get keen on.
Toby Edmonds and Jeff Lloyd combine with Plucky Girl (11) – last start was caught wide and really had no luck and should get a better run from barrier 5 this weekend.
Manias (4) has been racing consistently and is looking for a hat trick of wins this weekend for the Rob Heathcote/Jimmy Orman team.
Looks a match race. I am staying solid with the Heathcote yards who have been getting winner after winner in recent weeks!
Some rough chances to Lothario (6) from the Steven O’Dea stables and Raja Ampat (7) who made good ground late last start behind Manias (4).
Selections: 4-13-7-6
************************************************************************************************** Race 5
So last start I was half keen on Snitz (2) and he came out and was dominant winning impressively. He has been sensationally backed since the markets have opened – from $2.70 into $2. The Matthew Dunn stable followers must think that he will go on with it here this weekend.
I am going to give a big leg up to Colosimo (5) trained by Chris Waller on the Gold Coast. I am going to strongly suggest we overlook the last Gold Coast run as she was severely hampered at the start. I am thinking on the bigger track this weekend - if she jumps on par with them – she will be a genuine contender here.
Mishani Bullitt (1) meets Snitz (2) better at the weights for the defeat last start. Chris Anderson’s team has been going great in recent times and we should see a better run here third up from a spell.
Selections: 2-5-1-3

Race 6
This is a tough way to start the Quaddie this weekend – with a pretty open field to contend with here.
Impregnable (11) with the Edmonds/Lloyd combination deserves to be favourite and was very good last start winning here over 1200metres in a BM 0-70. This week he goes to Class 6 grade – is down in weights but he does have a habit of missing the start. That all being said he is still a serious chance here.
The one I am going to tip on top is Apoloboom (8) from the Ben Currie stable at Toowoomba. Last start this gelding was beaten in the Ballina Newmarket after being sensationally backed from $7 into $1.95 - only beaten be a length and not getting the race on protest. This week I note a senior jockey in Brad Stewart is booked and I think that he is a great chance here.
Aleacia Bennett from Cessnock brings her charge Art D’amour north after a fine run first up at Randwick. I see that Rachael Murray who partnered him first up at Randwick has chosen to head to Doomben to pair with him again – this could be a sign.
Chris Anderson has another strong chance again here with Mishani El Lobo (5). This gelding won last start in similar grade over 1110 metres. Stephanie Lacy keeps the ride and he again looks well in with her claim this week. I am not sure if he is a genuine 1200 metres horse – this assignment tell us more in that regard.
Selections: 8-11-10-5
************************************************************************************************* Race 7
The second leg of the Quaddie and it has to be one of these Class 3 lotteries! Ho Hum!
I am probably going to be in trouble here – you see I am a fan a Lifesaver (6) and Blair Gibson (Gibbo) and Damien Quinn (Friar Tuck) have an interest in this runner. He has been racing in Sydney since resuming in the Highway Handicaps over 1100 metres.
I thought last start he raced as if he was looking for longer. He will be competitive here this weekend. I am sure if he wins I will be sledged as well as I am not putting him on top!
I am going to tip Spring Tycoon (3) from the Stuart Kendrick stables. Drawn barrier 1, he has a tremendous third up record so at the $8 mark this one is each way all day for me! He has started favourite in his last two starts and both times finished second. I think we may see the best of him here this weekend.
David Pfieffer from Warwick Farm has sent one of his team north looking for some prize money – Jemadar (5). Matthew McGillivray takes the ride so they seem serious to get a win for this four year old gelding. He has had a freshen up and a barrier trial at Rosehill before heading north to Queensland. He is a good chance here as well.
Selections: 3-6-5-9

Race 8
An Open Handicap over a mile – they are not getting any easier!
I was sitting near trainer John Zielke last weekend when Dreams Aplenty (3) was beaten narrowly be Someday over 1350 metres. I remember him saying “wait to next start when he gets over a mile!” So this weekend he gets the mile and despite the quick back up he looks like the one to beat and comes off some solid Winter Carnival form.
The other one I have here as a genuine chance is another runner from the Rob Heathcote stables – Lordag (7) who comes off what I could say was a great ride with a massive weight last start in the Ballina Cup. I don’t think jockey Jimmy Orman could have given him any more opportunity to win the race – he was just beaten by the weight on the day! This weekend he drops back in weight to 54 kilograms. I think a mile is his pet distance. Watch out for this one!
The bottom weight Ahndras (14) has been racing well. I think despite being up in class this weekend he gets in nice at the weights and will be competitive. He has a great third up run record as well. Jeff Lloyd in the saddle.
Selections: 3-7-14-4

Race 9
The last race on a nice race program – I hope that you are winning come this race! Seriously , a No Metro Win race for the last leg of the Quaddie and Treble!
I really don’t know what to do here. Let’s throw a dart on the form guide and see what it lands on.
Okay we have a winner – Capetown Hussey (11) from the Steven O’Dea stable with Brad Stewart aboard. I know she has drawn wide but I don’t think this will be a disadvantage as she does get back and run home late.
The second emergency Dia De Reyes (17) is a strong chance if he makes the field – this is Matthew Dunn trained and to be ridden by Robbie Fradd, a lethal combination when they pair up!
Last start at the Sunshine Coast he just went under over the mile. I think this weekend no weight, drawn handy this one is a good chance. There has been some early support for the gelding as well since the markets opened firming from $8 to $5 in some markets.
Jimmy Orman finishes off the program with a nice chance – Mandryka from the Steve Tregea stables. First up he was impressive winning at Sunshine Coast. He does love the mile winning two from three starts and with some speed on in the race he will be able to settle and make a slashing late run.
Tegan Harrison rode the last winner on the program last weekend. She rides a roughie here again this week - Hula Girl for Paddy Cunningham. She has won on this mare before and she may be a rough chance at massive odds for your exotics – currently around $25.

Jockey Challenge
This week the field looks like an even bunch – a tough weekend. I have settled on a battle between Brad (Brad Stewart) and Fradd (Robbie Fradd) – maybe have something on both of them. They may be good odds – if Robbie’s horse Dia De Reyes (17) in the last doesn’t make the field I would just back Brad Stewart!
