WINNO'S WINNERS: ROSEHILL, SEPTEMBER 23

ROSEHILL RACES – SATURDAY 23 SEPTEMBER 2017
A big card of great racing this weekend at Rosehill – this should spring board some of these runners into the upcoming competitive Spring Carnival.
The good horses are back!
We are racing on a “GOOD” surface with the rail 3 metres out for the entire course.
Now it is time to get into the program for this week!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
Race 1
Race one – a tough race.
Beau Geste (2) was first up at Randwick three weeks ago. He raced like he needed the run. I am confident he will strip fitter here this weekend – maybe a nice way to start off the program.
There is one here from the Snowden team that looks like an improver and who is shooting for a hat trick here – Molten (3). Kerrin McEvoy stays on the colt and this one at $6 may represent good each way value.
Chris Waller has a number of runners engaged. The impressive win of Paret (5) first up at Canterbury is noteworthy. Hugh Bowman has stuck with this Harbour Watch colt.
Selections: 2-3-5-6
************************************************************************************************** Race 2
A small and disappointing field here for the distance race on the program ... over 2400 metres. I wish I had one going around winning $84,000.
The recent Newcastle Cup winner Broadside (1), trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, goes around here. His bullocking all the way win at Newcastle suggests to me that he will be suited again here this weekend.
The likely danger is the runner up in the same race – Auvray (3) - who can mix his form. He is a seven year old now.
This is a poor race – little interest here – sorry punters!
Selections: 1-3-4-2

Race 3
The TAB Highway lottery for the program! Here we go – looking for a winner is like trying to pick the Powerball on a Thursday night!
The Danny Williams trained Don’t Give a Damn (2) was solid last start here a fortnight ago. I think that run will have tightened him up for this assignment. He has gone up in weight but I think the form out of the race could prove strong.
Colt Prosser has Apocalyptic Fun (4) engaged. He raced well over a mile at Tamworth last start racing on the speed and the going away with it in the straight. With that type of form he may be seasoned to be very competitive over the 1500 metres of this race. A nice quinella for mine 2 & 4.
Selections: 2-4-3-6

Race 4
This is an even lot here contesting the Ranvet Handicap.
Up ‘n’ Rolling (3) saluted for me a fortnight ago. He looks the real deal and I cannot find a reason to get off here this weekend – looks like another winner to Kerrin McEvoy!
Now the danger is Alward (2) - don’t write him off after his last run. I think the drop back to 1800 metres was his downfall - he was just starting to get going at the end of the race. Back to 2000 metres this weekend and I think that you will see a markedly improved performance.
Selections: 3-2-4-5

Race 5 2017 Shannon Stakes (Group 2)
I think this is a match race between Washington Heights (5) and Dawn Wall (9).
They met at Randwick three weeks ago and Washington Heights (5) won, but gee whiz did Dawn Wall (9) come home like a good thing. This weekend it may all come down to the race tempo and the riding tactics. Dawn Wall (9) has a great second up record so you should take note of that.
This will be a close one and the judge may be taking a good look at the print when he calls a halt to this race.
For mine – let’s stay with Washington Heights (5).
Selections: 5-9-4-8

Race 6 2017 Gloaming Stakes (Group 3)
The first leg of the Quaddie – a great race!
Team Godolphin has a strong hold on this race. Astoria (1) won the Spring Stakes at Newcastle last start and ran good time – coming wide and running home late. On this run you would assume that the 1800 metres is made to order.
The one I am tipping is the stable mate – Sanctioned (3). Last start he was extremely unlucky when being severely checked at the 1200 metres and losing all his momentum. Hugh Bowman managed to balance him up again and he flew home late to be beaten 1.8 lengths here over 1500 metres. I am thinking that if he stays out of trouble this weekend he is a great bet at around $3.80.
Sully (5) is the Victorian visitor that has been working nicely through his classes. He will probably sprint well – but will he handle his first look at Rosehill and the Sydney way of going?
Selections: 3-1-5-7

Race 7 2017 Golden Rose (Group 1)
This week’s feature race and what a race it is!
A fortnight ago I thought that Pariah (3) would have the wood on Menari (2) – I admit I was wrong!
I am going to have to stay with the Gerald Ryan trained Menari (2) and Joshua Parr to land a Group 1 feature race!
The danger for mine is the Ciaron Maher trained Merchant Navy (7) who has been so dominant since debuting at Pakenham. Since then this Fastnet Rock colt has remained undefeated in his four career starts. Maher has carefully spaced his runs out and my mail from Melbourne is that they have always had this race set as the Grand Final for this one.
So with that in mind he should be super competitive. Mark Zhara has ridden him for 3 wins from 3 rides and resumes his association with the colt here – watch him storm wide on the track, probably 5 or 6 wide here!
I have a soft spot for the team Snowden trained Pariah (3). I still think that they would have learnt a lot of lessons after the last run – he was outgunned last start – so watch out for the Snowden and Shinn team to hatch a plan to see a Group 1 victory this weekend! Selections: 2-7-3-4

Race 8 2017 Golden Pendant (Group 2)
This is the leg last weekend that destroyed my BIG 6 and Quaddie selections – let’s hope I can do better this weekend!
Daysee Doom (4) loves this track and distance. She goes well second up and has apprentice Andrew Adkins aboard for his master Ron Quinton. These two combined to win the Dark Jewel at Scone back in May with a dynamic win. I think she is ready to show her best here this weekend. She is great each way value at $6!
Bonny O’Reilly (7) just didn’t fire last start – overlook that run she will strip fitter and be better suited here this week.
Omei Sword (2) looks like she has been working up to the 1400 metres of this race. I am not too sure what has happened in her first two runs since resuming but I think drawn better this weekend High Bowman will the chance to ride her a little more handy. Just remember last year on this exact day she finished a gallant second in the 2016 Golden Rose when beaten by Astern!
Selections: 4-7-2-3

Race 9
The last race on a superb program. I just wish I was travelling to Sydney to watch this program trackside!
The Chris Waller team is well represented here with three runners and they all have genuine chances.
Last start I was tipping Zumbelina (5) first up who was sensationally backed and it got the chocolates. I really cannot see why this imposing mare will not get home here. She has been well backed since the markets have opened as well – firming from $3.80 to $2.80 – and the flow of money strongly suggests she has pulled up well and trained on after that first up win.
The danger in my opinion is one at odds – Screamrr (9) who won first up last start for the Anthony & Edward Cummings team. This Street Cry four year old gelding raced against some quality fields back in April 2017 – back in grade to a Benchmark 89 and down in the weights I think he is a genuine each way chance at the great odds of $10.
Selections: 5-9-7-3
