WINNO'S WINNERS: GOLD COAST, OCTOBER 7
By Darren Winningham | Friday, October 6, 2017
Well WINNO has been off having a spell for the last few weeks.
This weekend I am packing the cameras, the sunscreen and the HRO cap and heading to the wonderful Gold Coast track.
I just want to say there is nothing that compares to the amazing high rise skyline that is the back drop to the Gold Coast track and seeing the wonderful buildings that pepper the skyline as you look onto the track. The track is very unique. If you have never been I would suggest you get yourself to the Gold Coast racing this weekend – a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon as a punter or with family and friends.
The track is currently rated as “SOFT” and overcast weather is forecast for next few days. My mail is that by Saturday without a large amount of intense rain the track may, and I said MAY get back into the GOOD range – keep your eye on the weather and the track rating! The rail is true for the entire circuit.
I see WINX is looking for win 21 in a row at Flemington. Be sure to get in front of a television and watch this super mare face stiff opposition this weekend.
Then Sunday ... Bathurst is on! Go Craig Lowndes and HOLDEN!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.
*************************************************************************************************
Race 1
This is a race with not much exposed form for the two year old horses here to commence the massive program.
There are big wraps on the John Zielke trained Rains Aplenty (3). He is trained in Toowoomba and I see that Luke Dittman has made the trek up the hill to ride him in his two race trials. There is probably a degree of confidence here from the stable. Last weekend the Zielke stable debuted another two year old at Toowoomba and won the first two year old race of the season – again Luke Dittman was aboard.
I like the trial form of the Helen Page trained Brinkmanship (2) who has won his only trial at the Gold Coast and is trained at the track. Of interest to me is that Luke Dittman rode this Spirit of Boom colt at this trial win. Maybe the lead here is that he likes the trial form of the Zielke runner.
The other runner that has grabbed my attention is Bolter (1) trained at the Sunshine Coast by Mark Webb – impressive in a small field in a trial as well.
Selections: 3-2-1-4

Race 2
This is another two year old race over the 900 metres. This time a massive field of fillies step out making it a difficult assignment to pick a winner.
I am going for the Paul Butterworth trained Baby Boo (2) to be ridden by Matthew McGillivray. She has a recent nice barrier trial win at Doomben and has drawn well here in barrier 5. That is my logic!
Fish ‘n’ Snitz (3) from the Stuart Kendrick stables at the Sunshine Coast was a good winner in a trial as well. She has drawn well in barrier 2 with Luke Tarrant aboard. Maybe this one will be some value.
John Zielke has another solid runner here in Miracles Aplenty (4). This filly has won both trials in Toowoomba and has run some nice times. Ruby Ride has been aboard in both trials and the Zielke stable has stuck solid here leaving her aboard for the debut run at the Gold Coast.
I think the racing record keepers and historians will be sent scampering if the Zielke team can crack the first three winners of the two year old season! Good luck John!
A big watch on Cailini (14) an emergency from the Tony Gollan yards. Whispers say that she goes well!
Selections: 2-3-4-10 rough chances 5 & 14

Race 3
A class 3 race over 1200 metres with a massive field – this spells disaster for punters!
I am liking one at odds here first up from a spell trained by Melissa Leitch - Honour ‘n’ Strength (4) - who has won previously first up from a spell. This one is currently around $12, a good price, and has drawn well and is resuming from a 15 week spell after he raced in some high quality races last preparation.
The challenger and favourite is Freddie Fox Trot (12) who is looking for a hat trick of wins for Les Kelly. I see he has elected to put apprentice Chris Caserta on board for this start and claim 3 kilograms. He gets in very well here this weekend and has been working through his grades well.
He will sit just off the speed and flash home late. I don’t know much about Chris other than he is 22, he rode 32 winners last season and has ridden 6 winners already this season. I will go on the lookout on Saturday to see if I can find out some more information! He looks like is has ridden in Melbourne and South Australia – maybe he has moved north?
Lord Marmaduke (6), trained by David Vandyke, usually leads and with Jag Guthmann-Chester aboard with a 3 kilogram allowance may get left alone in front. If that happens he may just prove difficult to run down here.
Selections: 4-12-6-2 rough chance 13
************************************************************************************************* Race 4
A small field – an Open Handicap over 1400metres.
Not a fan of this race to be honest.
I just think that the race is between the John Zielke trained Dreams Aplenty (2) who I think was gallant last start when pipped on the post at Doomben by Lordag, and the Michael Nolan trained Dream Finnish (3).
Dreams Aplenty has had 3 weeks off now and will strip fitter while Dream Finnish, who resumed at Ipswich with a slashing first up win and he does have a reasonable record second up.
Take your pick 3 from 2 or 2 from 3!
Selections: 2-3-1-4
*************************************************************************************************
Race 5
I am going for track specialist and value runner at $10 – Anton En Avant (5) trained by Stephen Lee at Ballina!
I think last start at Ipswich he was not suited by the track and this week at a track that he likes and a larger straight he will be in this for a long way!
The Chris Waller team have two engaged here – Vassal (2) and Loving Home (5). Last start they met at Ipswich and Loving Home (5) just knocked off the stable mate. There is a considerable change in the weights this week with Vassal (2) meeting Loving Home (5) much better at the weights for that defeat. Maybe they the placings will change!
As I say each week some of these these races at lotteries!
Sometimes it is best to stay out and head to the bar and the bistro for lunch about now!
Selections: 5-2-3-4
**************************************************************************************************
Race 6
With the scratching of Snitzkraft (1) - he is taking on the big boys in NSW in the Roman Consul Stakes (Race 6) - the field is now very open. Good luck team Kelso Wood and Patricia Gesler. Just a word of advice Ms Gesler, I hope you are not taking any Queensland germs into the mighty State of NSW!
I am tipping last start winner Colosimo (2) trained at the Gold Coast track by the Chris Waller satellite team. Last start she was dominant at Ipswich and she does have a previous win on the board here at the Gold Coast track. Now she has won this preparation I hope she can string a few wins together.
I am uncertain what to make of the run of the Tony Gollan trained Miss Exfactor (3) at Ipswich last start. She just seemed to need the run and will strip fitter here this week. She is the likely danger and she too has a win at this track and is undefeated second up!
Selections: 2-3-8-10
***************************************************************************************************
Race 7
Hold the phone!! It is race seven – this is the first leg of the Quaddie this weekend!
I decided to go wide in the first leg with We Built This City (11) from the Paul Nolan team. I don’t think you could have missed the first up run at Ipswich when he flashed home late and was only beaten by 0.3 lengths.
This week at the Gold Coast, where he has performed well in the past and second up, I think he is a serious chance to post a win. Jag Guthmann-Chester has had some good success on this Jet Spur gelding and with his 3 kilogram claim gets in well – just one slight set back is the wide barrier 13, but I think he will settle and then come home late.
I think you should overlook the run of Red Handle (10) at Ipswich last start when she was sent out favourite she didn’t seem to handle the track – nor did she get any luck. Don’t let this one get under your guard here.
D’Harmony (6), from the Steven O’Dea yard, I think deserves a change of luck! I think from a better barrier and with a senior rider in Paul Hammersley this weekend he could be one to show some sharp improvement at some odds.
Selections: 11-10-6-4
*************************************************************************************************** Race 8
The day is getting longer and the races are getting no easier punters!
You know I love value in my tips so I am going for the Les Kelly trained Snapchat Girl (15). I think that second up, over 1400metres and an apprentice claim of 3 kilograms for Chris Caserta she represents great value at $6.
I am going to say just get on!
The obvious danger is the Toby Edmonds/Jeff Lloyd combination at their home track with Deer Mountain (13). She was solid in her debut run for the new stable, winning midweek at the Gold Coast. She hasn’t the best form second up, but a change of stables and scenery may just be the key to Street Cry mare. I am keen to see her in the flesh on Saturday.
Prolific Belle (10) from the Gillian Heinrich and Ben Rodgers team is second up here at her home track. She has a tremendous record here and has drawn well she is sure to be in the finish.
Selections: 15-13-10-9
************************************************************************************************** Race 9
1800 metres at the Gold Coast and a large field and late in the day – this could prove disastrous for punters!
I am tipping one at some odds here – Tap This (9) for Chris Meagher who has just taken over the team from his father John Meagher. Bridget Grylls rides this track well and she is aboard again this week I think at $12 each way she is a great gamble.
The unknown runner is Shock Alert (6) from the Bjorn Baker yards in Sydney who makes a habit of sending one north now and then for a hit and run mission – and as usual he has Jeff Lloyd aboard to try and make the trip profitable!
This gelding won well last start at Kembla Grange when ridden handy and on the speed. These races at the Gold Coast can turn into a sit and sprint affair, however in recent months horses that get away with easy sectionals in front have been kicking and winning in the straight.
Kincaple Chief (5) was super impressive winning last start here at his home track for trainer John Smerdon and local jockey Luke “Sausage” Rolls. Again, with the speed that appears to be in the race, watch this one be set alight by Rolls and come wide and late with a slashing run – the red silks and gold sash colours always stand out and are easy to spot!
Selections: 9-6-5-10 rough chance 14
**************************************************************************************************
Race 10
A big day – ten races – a big sigh! I hope we are in front coming to the last. Or at least enough money for a feed at Versace after the races!
The jockey challenge may well come down to this last race as well – so a lot is hinging on this result!
I may talk like Donald Duck some days – but I think Sir Donald (10) from barrier 3 with Tiffani Brooker aboard, with his previous first up form and with his Gold Coast form is the way to go here in the last - $8 is on offer as well. I am hooking into this one! I think he showed enough to suggest he is a nice type and has a good turn of foot. I am gambling with him being forward enough to perform strongly over 1100 metres here after a 14 week spell.
Another Chris Meagher and Bridget Grylls chance here. Gatlinburg (12) from the Waratah Thoroughbred Syndication team looks a good each way chance. There is $11 on offer about this one at the time of writing. He loves the Gold Coast track and races well when his races are spread apart. He gets all the favours this weekend coming off a 4 week break and being drawn well in barrier 4.
Hi I’m Back (7) I tipped at good odds last start first up at Doomben. After looking in the yard he looked a little fat - not like me “Skinny Winny” - and I think he needed the run and will strip better for that run. His second up form is very good, but he has never won here at the Gold Coast in three starts. Maybe Jim Byrne can finish off the program on a winning note!
Selections: 10-7-12-3 rough chance 4

Jockey Challenge
This week the field looks like it is an open field – Luke Dittman, Jim Byrne and Jeff Lloyd all have a genuine chance to claim victory here! As I said it will all come down to the last race – so Jim Byrne gets the kiss of death from me this week!
The tipping competition between Sky Racing’s Josh Fleming and Winno is back on again this week!
It was a close contest last week with Josh taking the win – well done mate!
Good luck and good punting!
