KILCOY ‘KASH’ - CANNONBALL FINAL DAY – SATURDAY 2 DECEMBER 2017
This weekend I am packing my cameras and heading to the “Moonee Valley of the North” - Kilcoy race course - for their annual Cannonball Series Final and their X-mas meeting. This is always a wonderful day and there is amazing hospitality from the Club for this day. It is country racing at its finest with a solid bank of bookmakers at your service.
The rail is in the normal position on a track where it is often hard to run down the leaders
A big day out with a solid six race thoroughbred program supported by harness racing on the course proper and Mini Trots races for the children!
NB: As this form assessment was made prior to raceday, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1 - 2017 Tattersall’s Racing Club Kilcoy Christmas Cup
This week we start off the program with a stayer’s race. Only a small field to contest this race.
Timely Reminder (7) was sensationally relegated on protest here on 3 November 2017. On that occasion Ric McMahon rode the gelding. In a subsequent start they finished third and his weekend rider and horse reunite after a short six day back up to return to the track and try and post a win over 1900 metres. It is a long time between drinks with 195 weeks since his last win!
Mr Bon Vivant (2) is only a lightly raced gelding who is stepping up to the 1900 metres for the first time. I am going to gamble on this one to be able to make the transition from some middle distances to the longer distance this weekend. Skye Bogenhuber is back in Queensland and maybe she can crack a win here!
Prince of Baroda (3) has a win at the track so must be considered as well. Hannah Phillips takes the ride here this weekend and she does ride this track well.
Selections: 2-7-3-1

Race 2
This race is sponsored by the Kilcoy Exchange Hotel - a great place for a drink and feed after the races!
Potawatomi (3) debuted at the Sunshine Coast on Melbourne Cup day. The run was solid. It raced handy and just got beaten. It has been freshened since that run (a four week break from action) so look forward to a dynamite effort here from barrier 2 with Matthew Powell in the saddle.
Real Supremacy (5) is second up here from the strong Tony Sear stables in Toowoomba. Skye Bogenhuber takes the ride here . I would suggest you do not read too much into her first-up run. She should strip fitter here.
Troy Pascoe has Magequill (8) nominated. This weekend she is drawn nicely in barrier 4 and is third up from a spell with Nozi Tomizawa in the saddle. I think there was room for improvement on her last run.
Selections: 3-5-8-10

Race 3
The Butler McDermott Lawyers Christmas gift - this company is a wonderful supporter of the Kilcoy Club!
Legs Unbarred (1) is trained by Wendy Bannerot and just loves this track with six starts for four wins and two placings. This weekend she will be ridden by Nathan Fazackerley with Stephanie Lacy on holidays.
Vintage Beauty (5) is trained by Kristy Best at the Sunshine Coast and is to be ridden by Gary Geran. This mare likes to lead and dominate the pace - from barrier 1 I expect her to jump out and either take a sit behind Legs Unbarred (1) or take up the running. Either way I think she will be difficult to beat!
Snuggle Pot (5) is another that has run well previously at the track and will be ridden by Billie-Rose Derbyshire - I think she may just sneak a place with the distance being 1200metres.
Selections: 5-1-3-9 rough chance 6

Race 4
I think this is a battle of the bottom two runners in the field.
Peter & Will Hulbert have Tenor Lass (11) second up here after resuming with a nice placing first up here at Kilcoy. She has drawn barrier 1 and has Nathan Day riding her again this weekend. I think that with that run under her belt she will be hard to toss.
Umawinner (12) had some big wraps on her after a couple of nice barrier trial wins in 2016. I think she has had a transfer of stables to Lindsay Hatch and his stable apprentice Baylee Northdurft is making the effort to come and partner this one. The barrier is a small problem - draw barrier 8 - however, isfshe lives up to her early wraps and trials she could make this field look second rate!
Liam Birchley has a runner as well - Wicked Express (4). He has drawn in the hopeless barrier in stall 12 - it may be a tough ask from out there!
Michael Nolan from Toowoomba has a nice Instinction filly second up here this week. She made her debut at the Gold Coast and led on that occasion on a heavy track. I really think the track did not suit her. Keep an eye on this one.
Selections: 11-12-5-4 rough chance 3

Race 5 - 2017 Carlton Mid Cannonball Series Final
Now this is a race! Blink and you may miss it - over 800 metres!
The Kilcoy Race Club Chairman Mr Con Searle has a runner engaged here - Zouzouzakia (4). Maybe with a hometown advantage he may be holding the trophy at the end of the race! This Kevin Kemp mare won the prelude race here four weeks ago and must be given a chance.
Then you have last year’s winning jockey Jarrod Woodhouse who rides Life’s Like That (7), for Greg Cornish, who does have a liking for this track. I wonder if Jarrod has actually been provided with a trophy yet for winning a feature race? (Sorry mate just could not let the chance go by!)
The top weight is Isis Magic (1), trained by Ben Currie, has won her last three runs. Nick Keal rides the mare. I remember the first day when Nick made his debut at Kilcoy he rode a winning treble - this kid can ride so do not be scared to back him here!
The interesting runner is Land Office (2) to be ridden by Anthony Allen. Although he is drawn extremely wide in barrier 11 he tends to race well fresh. With no official barrier trial my spies at Deagon say he has been working nicely and will be competitive here this week.
The emergency is Royal Myth (13) from the John Zielke yards. She is above average, down in the weights and being drawn in barrier 2 could be one at odds to knock a few of these favourite runners out if she gets a run.
The last chance that you must consider is the Les Ross trained Frequendly (6) who resumed at Ipswich on a soft track. She is not a fan of tracks with some cut in them so just be aware of that. In fact four of her wins have come on firm and good surfaces. She too has drawn awkwardly in barrier 8 but she may be one at odds to make her presence felt here.
With such an open race the field may be the way to go here for your Quaddie and Treble.
Selections: 1-13-4-2 rough chances 6 & 7

Race 6
We finish the program with the Ian & Di McCauley Cup - these two are great supporters of the Club as well.
Bradley Hudson has three runners engaged here. Two of them are chances. Last Round (4) and Telloff (5) both have drawn nicely and have some recent solid form. I think that Last Round (4) will probably lead from barrier 2 and may be hard to run down. So sit down and ride this one home Nick Keal!
Atomic Missile (3) is probably better suited on a wet track - however, has drawn wide and may struggle from that draw. I am not sure what to do with this runner.
Our Rock O’Reilly (10) was unlucky first up at Ipswich - knocked over and hampered. Forget that run and this gelding may be able to cause an upset on this great day of racing.
I see Jake Hull is back riding accepting the ride on Snippet of Hope (1) - welcome back mate!
Selections: 4-10-3-5
***************************************************************************************************
Quaddrella (races 3 to 6)
1,3,5 / 5,11,12 / 1,2,4,6,13 / 3,4,10 - cost is $135 to $1
Small Quaddie (races 3 to 6)
1,3 / 11,12 / 1,2,4 / 4,10 - cost is $24 to $1
Treble (races 4 to 6)
5,11,12 / 1,2,4,6,13 / 3,4,10 - cost is $45 to $1
Jockey Challenge
It looks a tough challenge here - Skye Bogenhuber has some nice rides and then Nick Keal has a couple of nice rides in the latter half of the program - maybe have something on both!
Good luck and good punting - see you all at the track!
