MY CALL: THE STATE OF ORIGIN SERIES IS HERE TO STAY

The State Of Origin jockey series is here to stay and that's a good thing.

It provides another platform to promote and highlight the evolving Summer Carnival.

This year's version was well promoted and the rewards were reaped with strong media coverage.

But on balance the series finished disappointingly with more than half the competitors missing out on a ride on the final day because the field sizes didn't measure up.

Could I suggest two tweaks for 2018?

Firstly, restrict the series to the two days of the metropolitan Friday-Saturday double header.

The series should build to its finale at the main meeting of the week.

Secondly, select the Origin races AFTER acceptance time to ensure all riders receive their full,opportunities.

This can be advertised to licencees so if they don't want a jockey not of their choice, they don't nominate.

These changes should ensure an exciting and competitive State Of Origin.

Yes, there is a family connection with Tracey Pelling and former jockey Mike Pelling.

They are cousins.

Tracey Pelling has been appointed by QRIC as the Integrity Regulation Unit manager.

Currently she is the Officer-In-Charge of the Queensland Racing Crime Squad which is annexed to QRIC.

She also led the Greyhound Racing Inquiry Task Force.

It's worth pointing out she served her country in the Middle East a few years ago.

This is a good and sensible appointment.

The metropolitan jockeys' premiership has developed into an intriguing contest.

For the first time in many months Jeff Lloyd does not lead the title as Robbie Fradd edged to a half win lead after Saturdays racing.

And the UBET market reflects the tussle with Lloyd on the drift to $1:67 and Fradd tightening to $2:25.

And Matt McGillivray lurks dangerously on the the third rung. He is priced at $7.

Tony Gollan holds a healthy 14 win lead on the trainers' side of things.

With the Labor Government out of caretaker mode and Stirling Hinchcliffe appointed as Minister For Racing, expect some movement at the Racing Queensland station.

At least as the Member for Sandgate, Hinchcliffe can pop into the RQ Deagon offices occasionally.

Prizemoney increases and infrastructure decisions are likely announcements.

And a return date to Eagle Farm is eagerly anticipated.
