IPSW SEPT 17 - STRIBLING WINS AS HE LIKES
By Graham Potter | Saturday, September 19, 2009
Ipswich, September 17, 2009. Track - Good. Rail - out 7.5m. Maiden Handicap (C, G & E) - 1350m. Time: 1-21.45. 1 Stribling; 2 Piccolo Knight; 3 Court Jesting.
The Bill Trimble trained Stribling scored a confident end to end win, setting too hot a pace for his rivals to handle.
Jockey Jim Byrne chased the three-year-old out into an immediate from his wide draw and the colt then proceeded to stretch his field out by maintaining a strong gallop to the turn. Piccolo Knight tracked the leader from the break and the chestnut loomed as a real danger to the leader on the turn but that threat evaporated on straightening as Stribling found a kick which carried him out of range of his rivals and on to claim the first win of his career at his fifth start.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Bill Trimble: “I bumped Jimmy (Byrne) on the horse ... because he rode him last start in town and he jumped from an outside alley there. When he hit the ground in front, he just wouldn’t settle and they just got him that last little bit and he got beaten by half-a-length. When I bumped Jimmy on again he said, if this horse relaxes a bit, he said he will just win without a worry in the world. That’s basically what happened.
“Oh, he is still learning you know mate. He is still so green and immature. Even though he is a three-year-old he is still an overgrown baby.
“I reckon we’ll give him another start, maybe two. Then we’ll turn him out for three or four months and I reckon he’ll come back a good four-year-old.”
Jockey Jim Byrne: “Oh look, you know, it was a bit unlucky last start (when second at Doomben). Well, he had all the favours go his way but just over-raced ... that’s what I mean by being unlucky ... he over-raced and didn’t give himself much chance to actually finish the race off.
“Today he relaxed a lot better and hence he was able to show that turn of foot in the finish. Would have been nice with better price money at Doomben but you take a win when you can get a win.”
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Dukes Son (C. Eaton) and Kingaroo (J. Taylor) were slow to begin. After being a little slow to begin, Iron Hawk (J. Wood) was hampered shortly after the start between Gold Cymbals (D. Craven) and Canyon Road (R. Goltz), which shifted out.
Brokacannon (W. Clasohm) over-raced in the early and middle stages, and after passing the 1000m shifted out off the heels of Stribling (J. Byrne), resulting in Amery (D. Griffin) being taken out across the heels of Piccollo Knight (A. Spinks). Near the 800m, Kingaroo (J. Taylor) was momentarily tightened for room by Court Jesting (G. Colless), which shifted in slightly. Kingaroo then raced fiercely for some distance.
D. Craven, rider of Gold Cymbals, explained that the gelding, which was having its first start, raced greenly during the race. He added that, in his opinion, Gold Cymbals will be better suited over longer distances than that of today's race.
When questioned, apprentice J. Wood explained that after being tightened for room soon after the start, Iron Hawk settled further back in the field than intended. J. Wood added that rather than make a mid-race move and be trapped wide, he elected to remain towards the rear of the field until approaching the 400m and, in his opinion, Iron Hawk worked to the finish line well. A post race veterinary examination of Iron Hawk failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
